Ian David Wyles

In loving memory of a life well-lived and deeply cherished.

Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ian David Wyles, a cherished father, friend, and member of the Macquarie Park community. Ian left us peacefully on 4th February 2024, at the age of 83. Born on 24th March 1941, he lived a life rich with fulfillment, love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

Ian's life was marked by his vibrant personality and deep passions. Known for his infectious smile and sociable nature, he had a unique ability to illuminate any space he entered, bringing joy and warmth to those around him. His kindness and supportive demeanor made it easy for him to forge lasting friendships, creating a sense of comfort and belonging for everyone he met.

A true connoisseur of red wine, Ian attributed his long and happy life to his love for the finest vintages. He found great joy in exploring and savoring each bottle, not just for the taste but for the stories they held, sharing this passion with friends and family and fostering unforgettable moments together.

Ian's zest for life was also evident in his love for driving his beloved Red JCW Mini through the streets of Sydney. His wide, joyful grin and the sparkle in his eye were the perfect reflection of his adventurous spirit and his embrace of life’s every journey.

But above all, Ian was a devoted father to his three children, Catherine, Richard, and David, and a loving grandfather. His unwavering support, guidance, and heartfelt conversations nurtured a strong, unbreakable bond with his family. His love was boundless, and his pride in their achievements immense. While we will deeply miss his physical presence, the legacy of love he leaves behind will continue to connect us.

To celebrate Ian's remarkable life, we invite all who were touched by his generosity, kindness, and vibrant spirit to a funeral service on Tuesday, 20th February 2024, at the Macquarie Park Cemetery & Crematorium. This will be a moment to honor him, to share our treasured memories, and to pay our respects to a truly extraordinary man.

Ian David Wyles will always occupy a special place in our hearts, leaving behind a legacy rich with love, laughter, and the indomitable strength of family bonds. As we grieve his passing, let us also celebrate the incredible impact of his life, a life that made ours infinitely better. May he rest in peace, and may his spirit continue to guide and inspire us.

I first met Ian during the Covid lockdown protests in Sydney. The cheeky smile and can do attitude in spite of health and mobility issues made me like him instantly. We got to know each other well over the next few years and I always admired his sense of humour, strength of character and no no nonsense approach to life. He was one tough old bugger! He was an inspiration in both standing for truth and getting old gracefully…. With a bit of spice and rebellion thrown in. RIP my old mate. Definitely not forgotten.

During times of great adversity; Ian was an example of fortitude, perseverance, courage and kindness to his Stand In The Park friends.
He upheld himself with the greatest of dignity and honour in the face of tyranny, persecution, bullying and harrassment.
He is and always will be an example and leader for all of us. We will have you in our hearts and minds when we walk into our next battle. Knowing full well that you were there rain, hail, sickness and shine without fail, right next to your Hyde Park Comrades.
May Almighty God Bless you and Our Lady keep you.

Ian, you were always a delight to be with. We had a wonderful time with you at Margaret River - twice - during KGV reunion wine tours. Always loved to catch up with you and Catherine for yum cha in Sydney. You were always the gentleman. Always providing laughs. Great drinking buddy. Lovely support to me when I lost my Frank. You will be sorely missed. Love you!

So long and thanks for all the great memories, catching up for yum cha, hearing about all the amazing stories from the early days of television, going out on the boat, watching the Blues Brothers (probably multiple times), catching the Puffing Billy train and getting soot in my eye! Will miss you dearly ABcb

A lucky star guided me when I met Ian.
He has been the father figure for me and best friend during the highs and lows of life.

A mighty man, full of life, enjoying every fleeting moment.

A mighty man in his deep understanding of humanity, with both the good and the bad.

A mighty man, who gave me his love and kindness when I needed it most, unconditionally and with no judgment.

I am forever grateful for the time I spent with him and my ‘sister’ Cat.

I love you Ian.
Rest in peace and keep on shining your light.

Ian is a true friend with a big heart and one of the most positive person I have ever known.
I have known Ian since the GTV-9 days and we have worked together on and off at ATV and TVB HK after.
He has amazing capacity to help other people both professionally and personally. Also, it’s not surprising that he is a super Dad to his family in so many special ways.
He exemplifies the meaning of a decent human being by his acts of caring, humor, time for others. His is a mate to all of us and a brilliant engineer all rolled into one.
its rare for me to have a close friend that lasted for 70 odd years. I shall miss him dearly.
My sincere condolences to Catherine, Richard, David and their families.

I first met Ian in 1958 and a lifetime friendship of incredible memories is the legacy he has left me - too many to know where to start and to relate, from our early extraordinary trip over the snowy mountains running in his new Mini 850, to the time he took us all to a late night south Yarra coffee shop to hear a new group called “the seekers” and another when Ian and his crew had done the O.B at the Mornington races and decided to bring this gigantic ch.O. OB van with its huge Prime Mover over to a beachside party we had going nearby, thus effectively blocking off three of our neighbours driveways!

Oh, so many great times, but my fondest and most enduring memories will always be of this pint-sized dynamo of a human being - highly intelligent yet so humble, loyal and incredibly generous with the most happy and infectious personality.

Vale my dear friend,
you sure were someone special.

I was just a young, green engineering student when I met Ian in the mid-70's when I would spend my summers at ATV working with Wally, Even though we never worked together Ian always made time to know who I was. Our contacts deepened after I left O/10 and had met him both in Sydney and Hong Kong and at various trade shows and conferences around the world. He was such an interested engineer even if what I was talking about what not directly in his wheelhouse. One of those trips he took me for a ride in his cherished Morgan. I suspect we were on our way to a nice lunch at a Chinese restaurant. RIP Ian - gentleman, engineer and family man - and great at all three.

Ian was a great friend and work colleague of my late father Boris. After an acute battle with cancer, Boris passed away in 1990. Ian took care of my family and I, right when we needed a guardian angel. We formed a special bond and he became an incredible father figure in my life. I ended up working at Ch 9 and I saw the impact he had on Australian and global broadcasting technology. One of his proudest moments was the transition to 16:9 broadcasting. Ian has been an influential and positive person in my life, that I am so immensely grateful for. We have shared many great memories, journeys, meals and glasses of wine. He is very much loved by my whole family. Cheers to an amazing man, Ian Wyles.

So sorry to hear of your passing Ian.
I will never forget you hospitality when you hosted Barry Crompton, John and I when we visited CH9 in the early 2000's. The meal at Styvesons Cross Nest will last in my memory for ever. I am not sure I was at my best for the wine tasting the next day.

I was glad to have caught up with Ian last August 2023 for lunch at his favorite Panda Yum Cha at Macquarie Centre.
Ian in 1987 gave me the opportunity to be the first person at the Nine Network to look after and operate the first SNG 1.5 meter Advent Uplink Satellite system.
In 1996 we also built the first two National Nine Network Sydney's Toyota Landcruiser ENG vans.
Fond memories.
