In Memoriam
Henry Heng-yi Chen, passed away on December 24, 2024. He was born in Loudong, Taiwan on January 18, 1942. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sue; his three children, Martin, Eden, and Luna (Chen) Ragsdale; and his six grandchildren. Henry graduated from Taiwan Normal University and was a physical education teacher before going into business. He achieved great success in Taipei as a businessman but after a business trip abroad, he decided that he did not want to live under martial law imposed by the KMT. In December 1975, he immigrated to the United States. Shortly thereafter, in July 1976, the rest of the family followed him to Atlanta, Georgia. He owned a sandwich shop in Tucker, Georgia for a number of years and later became a Subway Sandwich franchisee in 1986. He worked tirelessly for his children, giving them opportunities to thrive. All three of his children obtained undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. He also was active in the Atlanta Taiwanese community; he was a founding member of the Atlanta Taiwanese Presbyterian Church and later served as an elder for many years. He was also active in the promotion of the democracy movement in Taiwan. He served as president of the Atlanta Chapter of Formosan Association for Public Affairs, an organization that promotes worldwide support for Taiwan independence.
After retiring from day-to-day work in 2007, Henry and Sue moved to Laguna Woods, CA in 2010, before relocating briefly to Chapel Hill, NC in 2021 and eventually to New Taipei City, Taiwan, in 2023. His family relished the fact that post-retirement, he was able to enjoy traveling and seeing the world with his friends and family, particularly his grandchildren.
Memorial service for Henry will be held at Suang-Lien Elderly Center in Sanzhi, Taiwan, on June 21, 2025 at 10 a.m. No. 22-17號, Beishizi, Sanzhi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 252
