In Loving Memory of Helen Marlene Cunningham
July 31, 1941 – November 20, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Helen Marlene Cunningham, who departed this world on November 20, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on July 31, 1941, at Harlem Hospital to Marion and James Kelly, Helen was the eldest of five siblings: James Jr., Ronald, Janice, Maurice, and William Kelly. She spent her early childhood in the Bronx before the family relocated to Sugar Hill, where Helen’s talents and creativity were nurtured.
Helen’s artistic gifts shone brightly from an early age. She studied ballet and African dance for three years, performing at the esteemed Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Her artistic journey extended into modeling and patents at just 16, where she graced runways and appeared in print publications.
Education was a cornerstone of Helen’s life. She attended P.S. 45, P.S. 164, and Washington Irving High School, majoring in art. Her passion for fashion and design led her to the Fashion Institute of Technology, and in 1981 she earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science from the College of Staten Island. Helen’s academic pursuits culminated in a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the CUNY Graduate School in 1982, a Master’s degree in Guidance Counseling, and a Doctorate/6-Year Certificate in Education from the College of Staten Island.
Helen’s personal life was rich and fulfilling. While working at Macy’s Herald Square during the Christmas season, she met Carl Spencer. Their union brought forth two sons, Stacey and Tad Spencer. Helen’s talents as a songwriter and singer shone brightly as she performed backup for the legendary Dionne Warwick and co-wrote songs such as That Wonderful Feeling of Love (Kathy Kirby), Outside World (The Drifters), and You Really Know How to Hurt a Girl (Jackie Ross).
After her marriage to Carl ended in 1970, Helen found love again in 1971 with Thedis Cunningham, whom she met during a church service at the Worldwide Church of God. They married and welcomed four children: Davina, Jason, Cherie, and Sean. Together, they opened their hearts and home to numerous foster children, providing love and care to those in need.
Helen was deeply committed to serving her community. For 18 years, she worked with the New York Urban League on Staten Island, serving as a recruiter and job counselor, helping countless individuals secure employment across New York City. Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident throughout her life, with ventures including Avon, America Image Marketing, "Barley Green," 5 Linx, Global Travel International, and Primerica.
Affectionately known as “Siren,” Helen was a spirited soul with a love for life. She enjoyed bingo, casino trips, and cherished memories of traveling to Hawaii. A coffee enthusiast, she often gathered with loved ones over a warm cup, sharing stories and laughter.
Helen’s life was a testament to strength, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that lives on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren—Kai Naomi Spencer, Jason Javier Cunningham, and Sydney Jade Spencer—her surviving sibling, extended family, and friends.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at Cherubini McInerney Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY 10302, on December 5th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A final service will take place on December 6th from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Bethel Gospel Assembly, 2-26 E 120th St, New York, NY 10035. May Helen rest in peace, and may her remarkable legacy continue to inspire and live on in all who knew and loved her.
