In Loving Memory of Greg Macfarlane

Greg Macfarlane, dad to Ashleigh and Alexander, passed away on 30th October 2025, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and unforgettable moments. His children were his greatest pride, and there was nothing he loved more than telling people about them.

Greg was born in Middlesex and later raised in East Kilbride, where he became known for his humour, cheek, and ability to make friends everywhere he went. He worked for many years in a printers, where he made sure every kid in Westwood mysteriously received Celtic or Rangers magazines straight through the letterbox. After that, he became a taxi driver in Glasgow city centre, a job made for someone with his personality. Every shift gave him a new story, and every passenger left with a laugh.

Greg always seemed to find his way into the middle of things. He made it into the media more than once from helping celebrities recover a missing phone to appearing in a football interview. If there was something going on, Greg was never far from it.

His other great love was Clyde. When Clyde were playing, the world stopped apart from Greg shouting at the referee, even though they definitely couldn’t hear him.

He had his regular haunts: The Monty, The Village Inn, and East Kilbride town centre. You couldn’t walk anywhere with him without stopping for a chat, a joke, or a story. He collected people wherever he went - friends, strangers, bar staff, taxi customers - and everyone had a story about Greg.

Since his passing, we’ve come to realise just how much he quietly did for others. Friends, neighbours, and even people we had never heard of have shared how he helped them during hard times: offering lifts, meals, advice, or a few pounds when it mattered. He never bragged or expected anything back, that was simply who he was.

Greg will be remembered for his humour, his loyalty, his mischief, and his massive heart. And, true to form, we all know he would absolutely love a fuss being made about him. The family would take great comfort in seeing old photos, hearing stories, and reading messages from people who knew him through the years.

Forever loved, forever missed

Think it was on the late 70’s when I was living in Bristol and I was sitting at my drawing board one nice hot day, when I heard the dulcet tone of someone singing The Song of the Clyde on the pavement below. I leaned out the window and there was the bold Greg giving it full blast! I shouted Greg and he looked about to see where the shout came from. He looked up and shouted back “Mc Guire I thought that was God calling me!” My boss came over and I explained who it was and he told me to go downstairs and speak to him and not hang out the window. He was a great boss and Scottish too. I went downstairs to talk to the Bold One when my boss came down and told me to take the afternoon off and go and enjoy yourself with your friend. He told me later he fancied joining us as he liked Greg’s cut but had too much on.
Greg was a wonderful human being and a fabulous person. I’m sorry I couldn’t make the funeral today but had just got out of hospital.
I’ll miss that big smiling face.
Losing too many wonderful fans recently and the soul of the Clyde.
Love to all his family.

I remember Greg and Cathy from the Murray days, those were great times. Met him on and off over the years. Alexander and my son used to work in the same call centre for a while and he would be there waiting in his taxi to pick him up, we would chat while waiting on them. He was so proud of his kids. The story about Ashleigh’s apartment made me laugh, I remember him going on about that in Spoons one day.
Not seen Cathy since she retired but would be great to catch up.
What a lovely service, it would be just what he wanted, thinking of you all.xx

Greg was a regular in my work, when I was made up to manager he made sure to tell me he was proud of me and gifted me one of his old ties, lovely, supportive and thoughtful guy, he'll be sorely missed.

As a Clyde FC fan, I knew Greg through my brother - John Stewart. Sadly, I didn't make the funeral today, but I would like to pass on my condolences to his friends and family. He will be missed personally and vocally by Clyde.

I remember when my niece was born, John mentioned to Greg that he had become a dad to a baby girl, Greg says congratulations - what did you call her? Same as your's John replied. What Greg? was his answer - he did of course mean Ashley.

I was saddened and shocked when I heard about Greg. I got to know Greg in the late seventies through his great pal Alex. Both of them diehard Bully Wee fans. I haven't lived in EK for a long time but often bumped into Greg in the local pubs when I visited EK. He always had great political wit and satire and plenty of stories from his Glasgow taxi days. He always had a laugh and a joke at the ready. Condolences to Greg's family.
Oh the champions play at Shawfield,
All the stars they play for Clyde,
For there's something about the football,
Makes it famous far and wide....Greg you know the rest!
Rest in Peace

Greg's passing is a sad loss to his family & everybody whose life he touched.

I remember when I was a 15 year old (in 1977) being on the EK Clyde supporters bus., when Greg and his great mucker, Alec Slowey, delivered a rousing and hilarious version of Chanson D'Amour by Manhattan Transfer .

RIP
