Obituary

Georgie Ann Oberteuffer Packwood, a.k.a. “Gigi”
Born June 19, 1930, 9:45 am Portland, Oregon; Died August 4, 2025, 12:25 pm West Linn, Oregon

Georgie is survived by William Packwood (son) and Shyla (& John) Moeller (daughter); Alexis Anne Johnson (granddaughter), Mateo & Adrian (great grandsons); and Cathy, Sarah, and Tom Richardson (nieces/nephew).

She is predeceased by her parents George Herman Oberteuffer and Mildred Martha Healey Oberteuffer, and her brother Bill Oberteuffer.

Georgie grew up in Eastmoreland before her family moved to the Nineacres farm in Lake Oswego in 1937. Her father taught her to ride horseback when she was 3 years old, and through her youth she rode her horse, Paint, cross country throughout Lake Oswego and Lake Grove, often stopping at her friend's house for a swim in the lake. Nineacres farm had horses, sheep, chickens, rabbits, ducks, and peacocks. She spent her childhood summers at Camp Meriweather, the Boy Scout camp which her father ran. She was a Junior Rose Princess in 1936 representing Duniway elementary school, started 2nd grade at Lake Grove elementary school, and rode at the Lake Oswego Hunt Club. When she was 10, she and her father rode horseback from Mt Hood to Crater Lake on the Skyline Trail (now a part of the Pacific Crest Trail). She took first place in an Oregon High School Press Association contest for best editorial, and graduated from Lincoln High School as editor of The Cardinal in 1948. She attended University of Oregon where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority (president her senior year), Kwama, Phi Theta Upsilon, and Mortarboard honor societies, a staff member on the Daily Emerald, and graduated with a BS in Psychology in 1952.

She was briefly married to David Crockatt in 1952, but they divorced in 1958. Following that, she worked in London, England for 2 years for the US Air Force Headquarters. She toured the European continent with friends, mostly camping out before returning stateside in 1960. She arrived on The Queen Mary in New York harbor the same day John F. Kennedy was elected. Georgie drove back to Oregon, taking a circuitous route from New York, heading south, and then west.  She worked as a secretary at the OHSU Primate Center.

She married Bob Packwood in 1964, and moved to Washington DC in 1968, having worked on his campaign for election. They adopted 2 children whom she raised while also serving with the Senate Wives, attending Book Club, and supporting Bob. She took every opportunity to travel, including to China, Israel, and Europe.

Her love of antiques flourished and she began her own antiques business, Plain ‘n Fancy, in 1985. She joined the International Society of Appraisers as a personal property appraiser in 1991.

She returned home to Lake Oswego after her divorce from Bob in 1992, where she continued her appraisal business and joined the local garden club, heritage club, and a book club. She volunteered at Albertina Kerr’s Economy Jar Thrift Shop, and spent hours in her home garden, enjoying her amazing views, and reconnecting with friends and sorority sisters. Georgie also traveled with friends and with her son, Bill, visiting the pyramids of Egypt, Machu Picchu, Antarctica, and Norway’s midnight sun, as well as exploring the Pacific Northwest.

Georgie retreated into the comforting beauty and warmth of her home in her later years, and there celebrated her 95th birthday with family before being moved to a hospice facility.

A memorial service is being planned for the Spring of 2026. As an avid gardener, spring was her favorite season.

I was Georgies next door neighbor for the past 20 years. I always admired her independence and intestinal fortitude as well as her ability to be empathetic and concerned for others.

My daughter, Natalya grew up with Georgie as our neighbor and friend. Georgie would always ask how Natalya was doing at school, especially when she moved to attend college out of state.

Georgie was a very caring person and we will miss her neighborly smile and caring attitude. May God bless Georgie and her family/friends.. May the memories soothe their loss. I know that ours will.
