In Memoriam

George Olvige Petersen, 87, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in the presence of his beloved wife, Carolyn Petersen.

George was born on November 3, 1938, in Hecla, South Dakota, to Anton and Ruth Petersen. He graduated from New Ulm High School, where he was a high school gymnast and trumpet player, before earning his undergraduate degree from Mankato State University and his law degree from the University of Minnesota. He began his legal career with the firm of Peterson, Bell, and Converse, embarking on a distinguished career in law and public service that spanned more than four decades.

In 1980, George was elected to the Ramsey County District Court bench, serving as the juvenile court judge until 1986. Prior to that, he served as a Ramsey County Municipal Court Judge. Over the course of nearly 30 years on the bench, George earned the respect of the legal community through his meticulous nature, his commitment to fairness and integrity, and his dedication to the rule of law. His impact on Ramsey County and Minnesota’s judicial system continues to be felt today through legal precedent he established. During his years on the bench, George formed many meaningful professional relationships, including a lasting friendship with his court reporter, Candise Brunton, who worked alongside him throughout his entire judicial career.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, George was a devoted husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend. He shared 64 years of marriage with Carolyn, the love of his life and steadfast companion. Together they built a family rooted in love, respect, loyalty, and quiet strength.

George found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved the Boundary Waters, fishing, camping, woodworking, grilling, and, in his later years, spending time on the golf course. He earned the title of master club maker, hand-crafting clubs for friends and family. More than anything, he looked forward to family gatherings, and treasured time spent with Carolyn.

George was not a man who sought the spotlight. He was thoughtful, wise and deeply principled. Stoic by nature and precise in both word and deed, he expressed his care not through words or grand gestures but through his presence, dependability, and dedication to those he loved. Those who knew him understood that, beneath his reserved exterior, he was a man of deep compassion and conviction.

His commitment to justice extended beyond the courtroom. Long before it became commonplace, George proudly officiated weddings for many couples, including same-sex couples, believing that all people should be treated with dignity, respect, and deserved the opportunity to celebrate love.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Ruth Petersen, and his brother, Morris Petersen.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Petersen; his children, Erika Hsu (Michael) and Christopher Petersen (Teresa); and his grandchildren, Thor (Haley), Annika, Camryn, Sydney, and great-grandson, Atlas, who will carry forward his values, lessons, and memory.

George’s legacy lives on in his family, in the countless lives he touched throughout his legal career, and in the community he served with distinction for so many years. He will be remembered for his integrity, wisdom, quiet devotion, and enduring commitment to justice.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

George and Caroline were our dear neighbors for over thirty years and were always so gracious and friendly. We still miss them and were honored to have George marry us in our home in 2018. We believe he enjoyed it as much as we did.
