Obituary
Geoffrey Wheeler Hobart passed away unexpectedly while traveling home to Vermont from Punta Gorda, FL.
He was 73 years old.
Born September 13, 1951, in Middletown, CT, Geoff was the son of the late Aaron Addison Hobart and Barbara (Stevens) Hobart Crawford. He grew up with his sister Stephanie and brothers Aaron Addison “Ron”, Jr., and Cyrus Hobart in nearby Old Greenwich.
Geoff became enamored with Kathleen Beales Bradbury while walking to the 4th of July Fireworks at Binny Park when they were thirteen. Eight years later, on August 26, 1972, they were married.
After a few stops, Geoff and Kathy moved to an old farmhouse in Belvidere, VT, with their daughter, Heather in tow. Shortly after, their son Ryan was born, and Belvidere would be home for the next 43 years. Geoff loved, and was loved by, this rural community.
Geoff was at home in the woods of Northern Vermont and found a career in them as a logging contractor for more than 30 years. His knowledge of the natural landscape was profound and his stories about the lumberjack life never failed to entertain.
As much as Geoff loved spending his work weeks in the woods, he might have loved spending his weekends on the water even more. From kayaking on Green River Reservoir to sailing on Lake Champlain and the South Florida coast, Geoff was constantly learning about the environment he was in, and the people who were in it with him.
Above all else, Geoff loved spending time with family and friends. His positive spirit was infectious, and people lined up to be near him. Uno on Block Island, furniture projects in his woodshop, and Gramp’s daycare are just a few of the ways Geoff made himself available to those he loved.
Geoff leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Kathleen B. Hobart of Waterville, VT, his daughter Heather Hobart and her partner Eli Moore and their children Ada and Quinn Moore, of Jeffersonville, VT, his son Ryan Hobart and his partner Janette Adrian of Gypsum, CO. He also leaves siblings Stephanie of Gloucester, MA and Cyrus of Pawcatuck, CT as well many cousins, nieces, nephews and his favorite dog, Sophie. Geoff was predeceased by his brother Ron Hobart and sisters in law Caroline “Carey” Hobart and Laura Hobart.

I was so sorry to hear of Geoff’s passing. Gone too soon. I only met him once. That was at the holiday gathering the office had at Trish’s house one year. His grand spirit and his enthusiasm for working in the woods was memorable. I learned a new term from his conversation when he talked about taking a break and “throwing it around” at the landing. Some groups of men have a way of throwing words around together that I find fascinating. His phrase made perfect sense to me.
I hope your heart is finding ways to heal and that your children and grandchildren are a comfort,
All best wishes,
Caro Thompson

We got to know at the annual Bluegrass Festival many, many years ago! He would zig zig through the umbrellas, kids, etc to make sure he visited with everyone there! He was a kind, thoughtful,, very caring person. Kathy, Dave & I are so, so sorry for you and your family.
You are in our thoughts & prayers.
Sincerely,
Dave & Pauline
We are so sorry for your loss. Geoff will be sorely missed. You're in our hearts and our thoughts. With love, Cathy and Richard.
I am so sorry for your loss. Geoff and my father, Jim, were best friends when I was growing up, both logging with horses and sharing their love of the woods. Ryan was my first best friend and Geoff let us make tall stacks of hay bales to jump off. He always had a story to share and a smile on his face. He will be so greatly missed by so many. Sending you all love and condolences.

I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. I only knew Geoff for nine short weeks, yet in that time, I developed a fondness and great appreciation for Geoff. Kind, caring, witty … all wonderful qualities that Geoff had. He will be sorely missed. Many hugs and prayers. I will make a gift to the charity listed in his loving remembrance.
Jim
Please accept my sincere condolences. I meet Geoff at the Nature Park in Punta Gorda. He called me “Vermont”. We had some lovely conversations about Vermont and Florida. I’m going to miss our brief connections in the park. He was a link to Vermont for me.
Sending prayers to you all.

He was a great friend and will be missed.
Very sorry
