Your legacy of love will forever light our way.

Obituary

Gene Sheldon Spencer, born on November 24, 1965 in Thompson Manitoba, passed away on March 25, 2026, peacefully at the age of 60 in Halifax surrounded by his loved ones. He was predeceased by his father, Sheldon Spencer, stepfather Ralph Mercer and survived by his mother, Hazel Mercer, stepmother Judy Spencer and siblings Brad Spencer, Sheila Spencer Land and Derek Spencer. Gene’s life was defined by his deep love for his family, loyal friendships, passion for sports, strong work ethic, and the kind-hearted cowboy spirit he carried with him every day.

Gene will be remembered lovingly by his partner, Cindy Clapperton, with whom he shared many cherished years, and by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Gene and Cindy built a life founded on hard work, love, and countless treasured memories. They had recently begun their retirement together in Hopewell, Nova Scotia. Gene quickly became a respected and cherished member of their new community, known for his contributions and handyman skills.

Gene was deeply proud of his children, Mandy (his princess) and Darryl (his little buddy), whom never doubted his love or pride. Gene held a special place in his heart for his beloved grandchildren, Gage and Brynlee, who will always cherish the many adventures they shared with Grandpa from coast to coast. Gene was always ready to spring into action with his tools, making sure the treehouse, fairy gardens, and zip lines were ready to go, and the ice cream was stocked for the grandkids' arrival. He enthusiastically scoured roadside garage sales for pools, skateboards and even adopted a chocolate lab puppy from a roadside box and added some bunny rabbits into the family fun.

Family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing Gene will remember him for his friendliness, good-natured sense of humour, and generosity in helping others and supporting his community. Gene approached life with a genuine care for those around him and carried a warm, welcoming spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. The neighbourhood kids in Hopewell will thoroughly miss knocking on the front door asking for Gene to come out and play.

Gene’s memory will be honoured and cherished by those whose lives he graced. His absence will be deeply felt and he will be forever remembered in our hearts.

The family invites those who knew Gene to share their memories, photos and condolences on this memorial page as a tribute to his remarkable life.

I met Gene and Cindy playing ball in union bay. Enjoyed our gold river tournament so much, playing volleyball at the pool, camping trips, parties at his sisters. We even had a family camp out at the “farm” in black creek and everyone had such a great time, so much love put into every little detail made it a magical place, especially for the kids. A truly kind soul, a deep warmth about him, I am not a “hugger”. But Gene gave the very best ones and always looked forward to them, I am so deeply sorry for the families deep loss.

Kendyll and I will miss my sweet uncle Gene and his warm loving hugs. He was always so willing to help us out with any projects around the house (see him helping set up Kendylls old play structure in our backyard). We also loved going to the summer concerts in the park with him and Cindy. My heart hurts so much, I’m glad I was able to say goodbye before he was gone. Love you uncle Gene.

Our family has such fond memories of their campground property in Black Creek and these pictures show exactly how we remember him. A great host, 'grandpa' to every visiting kid, animal lover, playful and a big goofball. Too bad we don't have a picture of the one time we came back to the island, happened to bump into him while he was walking along the road and shoved him in the trunk to give him a lift.
We send our love to Cindy, his moms, kids, grandkids and siblings and may you all find comfort in the beautiful memories and in eachother.

"Growing up, I remember animals being a huge part of my life because of my dad. We would often visit local animal shelters together, spending time giving love to the animals and making donations to support them. I can thank my dad for the deep love and compassion I have for animals today" - Mandy Spencer.

Your generosity will help provide medical care, rehabilitation training and a second chance to dogs in need, a cause that would have meant so much to Gene.
