Gaynor Sheahan

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’
And he replied: ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.’

Obituary

Gaynor passed away to be with the God she loved, surrounded by the love and prayers of her husband and children. Now rejoicing in her heavenly home. We look forward with hope to a beautiful reunion.

Dearly loved wife of Geoff, adored and adoring mother of Ben, Bethany, Nic, and Jack, treasured mother-in-law of Quor, cherished sister of Dianne, Malcolm, and Alistair. Gaynor lived with great strength, humour, faithfulness, and warmth; a bright light to all who knew her. We were blessed to know her love and care.

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:4

Miss you so much dear friend. Miss our chats. Miss your wisdom. Miss your quick replies to my messages and prayer requests. Miss the updates on your kids. Miss your gentle faith. Miss your advice and links to things you’d read that you thought I’d appreciate. Miss your generosity. Miss your kindness. Miss your funny stories, usually with you as the butt of the joke. Miss your humility. Miss watching you parent and learning from that. Miss watching you take home half of your lunch in a ‘doggy bag’ cos Geoff will eat anything 😘
Just miss you - rest easy dear one ❤️

Gaynor and I had children at Waverley Christian College together. From prep to Year 12, at we always had at least one child in the same class, so regularly came into contact on school events. I always loved chatting with Gaynor who was insightful and funny. Later I was in a running group with her and Christine Chisholm. We did so many fun runs together. Gaynor was a good athlete, always coming in ahead of me. Gaynor was a force for good in the world. Her work in Nepal, her love of dogs and her pride in children were some of her many strengths. May you have a great reward for the time you have spent on earth.

Gaynor - you are greatly missed.
It must be so hard for your family & close ones to believe that your brilliant light has gone out on earth even though we know it goes on in heaven with Jesus, the saviour you love.
Geoff is a long term friend of all the Sherriff family, so we were delighted to be able to represent the family at Gaynor & Geoff's wedding.
Geoff & Gaynor, you would have been oblivious to the fact that we only just made it to the special event (traffic & poor planning to blame), arriving at the church door, just as the Pastor announced "And now Dr Lindsay Sherriff will bring the Bible reading."
Linds confidently took to the pulpit as if nothing was amiss, but had to scan the auditorium to find where I was seated, afterwards.
As several have noted, Gaynor's missives from Nepal, were side-splittingly funny. I can still remember some of her lines. If nursing hadn't been her passion, I'm sure she would have made a good career out of creative writing.
We'd have loved to have the family join us in Kerang but it wasn't to be. God had different plans for them.
It was an enormous privilege to be part of Gaynor's prayer team, from afar. The courage with which she faced breast cancer and the miriad of treatments, was legendary.... All while she continued to work. Many less resilient individuals would have abandoned ship!
Gaynor, your life has been an inspiration.
With love and tenderness we bid thee farewell and look forward to seeing you in heaven when you will be free again

We wanted to say how very sorry we were to hear about Gaynor. We did not see her as often as we would have liked, but it was always lovely seeing her when she was visiting the UK. She was always good company, very funny, with a wonderful sense of humour, as well as being a great storyteller. Gaynor was very proud of her family and her children are a credit to her. Gaynor will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.
Sending our love and best wishes.

When I look back on my sister's life, how she touched our hearts and left us with many cherished memories, the fun and laughter we got from her letters when the family were in Nepal.
Her life was built around her family, church and work. She also dedicated a great deal of time towards her love of nursing for which she spent her entire working life.
Cherished memories live on. God bless you Gaynor.

I first met Gaynor through jogging around Jells park with Elizabeth Green. We trained for several fun runs together including the Herald sun run; the Age run; Lap of the Lake run and the Susan fun run. Gaynor’s positivity, humour and determination were ongoing as she lived her life to the fullest. She was greatly loved by many and will always be remembered.

So very glad to have known Gaynor. Will remember her for her kindness, faith, determination, and resilience, for the love she had for her four beautiful children and Geoff, for her sense of humour and for her candid openness. Such a trustworthy person.
We are so very sorry for your loss, Sheahan family.

What wonderful friendship with Gaynor and Geoff for over forty years
I was the minister of Willesborough Baptist Church when Gaynor found herself wanting to know more about the Christian faith. She had met a Christian doctor, Geoff in her A & E department. Faith grew and this led to Gaynor being baptised.
It was not long before there was the joy of a wedding!
Overseas mission set their agenda and Nepal called and years of service took them away from the UK.
There was always a warm and welcoming spirit with Gaynor. Over the years creative writing flowed from her pen, whether insights on mission life or her honest and amusing insights into her cancer treatments. She must have encouraged so many over the years.
We praise God for her warm friendship, winsome faith and wonderful family.

Auntie Gaynor was an inspiration to me from a very young age. I vividly remember the black and white postcards she would send to me from Nepal and the air mail letters from Australia that I would receive as a child. I would eagerly await the delivery of each one. These postcards and letters inspired me to travel and go on big adventures around the world. Gaynor made this feel possible for a young girl from Wallasey, England. This made me who I am today and I will forever be grateful to Gaynor for sharing her journey with me. I have always admired Gaynor - her kindness, warmth, strength, and generosity. Despite living so far away, we always remained close and I will forever cherish my memories of our time together in Australia, England and Bali. Forever in my heart ❤️

Gaynor was a friend I was privileged to have known, share my life, my family, my work, church life & to have been able to follow her life journey. We will miss her openness, her wonderful smile & the unique & special, caring person she was, as she walked & worked alongside all of us.
May those whose lives she touched continue to feel the spirit of her presence as we’ve each know it & been blessed by it.

I met Gaynor in the mid 1980’s, when we were both working as staff nurses in the Accident and Emergency department at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford Kent England. It was here that she met Geoff.
Gaynor was a very supportive colleague and a great friend; we had some wonderful times together, both in work and outside socialising.
We both moved away from the area shortly afterwards, but we kept in touch with Christmas card exchanges which Gaynor filled with stories of Geoff and the children, it was obvious from these letters that family and faith meant a lot to Gaynor.
I am very grateful that I was one of the lucky ones who not only worked with Gaynor but knew her as a friend as well.

I thank God for the wonderful encouragement Gaynor was to me during a difficult couple of years, as well as our friendship which was a lot longer.

When Gaynor came into our lives in the seventies, she brought spark, energy and humour. Add to that the courage needed to become a nurse and to go to Nepal to live and work and you have a very special person indeed. We feel privileged to have known her.

Gaynor brought so much to the Sheahan family. Her letters from Nepal are amongst the most entertaining you could want to read. At the same time she & Geoff’s time there was a witness to their love of God & commitment to follow the life of Christ. Gaynor was always good company & her family reflect the great woman she was and the love she spread around her. Well done good & faithful woman of God. Cousin Pam

Gaynor and I shared stories while manning a missions stand at a convention some ten years ago now, and that’s where I feel we ‘clicked’. I had known her just a little before that, and already liked her a lot. I especially enjoyed her outlook on life. Gaynor modelled purposeful living - making the most of each experience and interaction, living life to the full. .
