A LIMB HAS FALLEN FROM THE FAMILY TREE
THAT SAYS GRIEVE NOT FOR ME. REMEMBER
THE BEST TIMES, THE LAUGHTER, THE SONG,
THE GOOD LIFE I LIVED WHILE I WAS STRONG.
Obituary
Garth R. Prentice, cherished husband and loving father has left his family far too soon. On April 28th, 2024, during the very early morning hours Garth left the family to join those whom we love that have gone before us.
Garth is survived by his wife Gina, his eldest son Cody and daughter-in law Rola, his youngest son Troy and his daughter Dakota. He is also survived by his older brother Guy and sister-in-law Martha, their sons Graham and Malcom, as well as his parents Al and Betty. He was pre-deceased by his younger brother Shawn.
Garth was born on September 22, 1959, in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. At the age of 13 the family relocated to Calgary, Alberta. Although Garth always considered Vancouver home, he quickly made new friends and kindled a lifelong bond with Gina, his future wife, and best friend.
Garth's adventurous nature drove him to explore a variety of interests throughout his life. He embraced new challenges, whether it was baseball in his youth, the rush of downhill ski racing, or scuba diving as a certified enthusiast. His love for outdoor activities extended to bike riding, boating, and various water sports, with wake surfing holding a special place in his heart. Later in life, he obtained his motorcycle license to share the joy of riding with his youngest son, Troy.
One passion, golfing, remained throughout his life. From his teenage years onward, Garth enjoyed the challenge of the sport and found camaraderie on the golf course, he took pride in achieving a hole-in-one and enjoyed walking the course with friends.
As a young man, Garth had a strong desire to forge his own path in life. This drive was evident early on when, at the age of 17, he boldly established his own landscaping business. From there, Garth moved on to Guardian. In 2002, he relocated to Texas with Shaw Pipeline Services, rising to the position of Vice President and General Manager. He felt deeply honored and privileged to lead a team of dedicated individuals, valuing their contributions. His commitment to creating opportunities for others fueled his leadership and commitment to the company.
Garth and Gina were joined in Texas by their oldest son, Cody, and his wife, Rola, in 2011. In 2019 Garth and Gina joined their son, Troy, in California. Although spread out over the US, the family remained very close.
On June 1st, 2022, Troy’s daughter, Dakota, was born, marking the next generation in Garth’s family tree. Garth was amazed by his granddaughter as he watched her quietly with a smile.
What we miss most is Garth’s sense of humor. It didn’t take long after meeting him to find yourself chuckling at his quirky jokes. He loved to laugh along and was usually the one to get the laughter rolling. Though he may be gone, the echoes of his laughter will forever resonate in our hearts.

I grew up with Cody in Silver Springs Community here in Calgary, AB. My heart goes out to Cody, Troy, and Gina, and the rest of the family. I lost my father, Ole from Norway, back in 2010. My advice: don't hold back any grief, let the tears flow when they may, and feel the comfort of fond and lasting memories as they keep us afloat in the years to come. Lots of love, and remember that time will bring flowers.

The tribute summed up a life well lived and we thank you for sharing it with us. You can see Garth’s personality shine through in the smiles, goofiness, and obvious love for his family. Hang on to the good memories to help you through, and the rest of us in your lives to lean on ❤️.

I have a memory I never forget from so long ago when I was only 12 I think, and Cody was just a baby. Garth disappeared for a short while holding little Cody in his arms. When he came back to where we were all visiting, suddenly little baby Cody had huge biceps! Garth had taken face cloths and rolled them up into his little sleeves and Cody, only months old looked like a baby Superman! We all laughed so hard and Cody just looked stunned, which made it even funnier. We were all so happy to have his younger brother Troy born 4 years later, and to know these boys grew up very close with much the same humor as their Dad, and always laughing.
You will be missed Garth.
We are so sorry for your loss and send our deepest condolences.
This is such a beautiful tribute! Thank you for sharing all the wonderful pictures of Garth - his smile lit up the room!
I've included a picture of when Maggie and I visited you in Texas and we went wakeboarding - a lovely day and so nice to see him thoroughly enjoying himself.
With much love,
Liz, Mike, Erik & Devon
