To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.

Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce that Gangaram “Baba” Vichare, 91, of San Francisco, California has passed away on July 8, 2026, from heart failure at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. Known as Baba to his friends and family, he was born in Pune, India as the fourth of eight children.

Always curious about the world and a consummate problem solver, Baba completed two Bachelor of Science degrees in engineering, a Master of Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Dayton.

After immigrating to the United States in 1958 to continue his education, he met Clara Chenualt at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. They married in 1964 and raised two children, son Philip Vichare and daughter Anjali Vichare. During their life together, Baba and Clara lived in Ohio, West Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada and California.

Baba had a distinguished career in Product Development at the Westvaco paper company, where he worked for over 30 years. His last assignment was opening an office in India which gave him the fortunate opportunity to spend more time with friends and family. He enjoyed taking in views of the water with loved ones, a smokey single malt scotch with just the right size ice cube, listening to jazz and Indian music, and watching vintage westerns and spy movies. He believed in hard work, sought to help and mentor others, and always treasured sitting down to a meal of Indian food from his homeland. His curiosity, storytelling, and generosity will be greatly missed.

Baba is survived by his son Philip and his wife Margie, daughter Anjali and her husband Eric Fisher, grandson Justin, brother Ramakant Vichare and his family of Evans, GA, as well as a large extended family in India and the United States. A memorial and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 29th at the Carlisle in San Francisco (1450 Post Street) from 2 pm to 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

I met Anj in kindergarten and we've never looked back. Baba and Clara were like a second set of parents, even though they moved away from WV. Always kind and warm. The sun isn't as bright now, but I know you are reunited with Clara. Prayers and hugs for you all.

Baba & Clare were our neighbors in Keyser, WV. Phil & Angie were young, and the Vichares were “family”. We visited them in the Annapolis area. They were truly amazing people, and Baba was the epitome of a teacher & friend! I am truly blessed to have known him and call him friend. Many hugs & lots of love to Phil & Angie! Thank you immensely for letting me be able to speak to your dad before his passing.♥️
