Florentino Mendonça da Silva

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Florentino Mendonça da Silva on August 20, 2024 at the age of 85. Florentino was born on November 21, 1938 on the island of Graçiosa in Açores, Portugal.

Florentino married the love of his life, Germina in 1961. Together with their three young children, they courageously embarked on a new life in Canada in 1969. There, they continued to raise their family with a solid foundation of love, kindness, hard work and community. They embraced friendships with neighbours and co-workers of all cultures and proudly became citizens of Canada in 1982. Florentino was a founding member of the Graçiosa Community Centre in Toronto where he and Germina volunteered their time and enjoyed social events for many years.

Their life in Canada centred around family. Bellwoods Avenue was the setting of many hours-long visits with their siblings, cousins, extended family and friends. Florentino became a formidable sous-chef to Germina’s many hours of preparing feasts for these occasions. He was the ultimate provider and supporter to his wife and took great pride in that role. He was always ready to greet newcomers to his life with a welcoming smile. He absolutely treasured the greatest gift life had given him; his grandchildren. In less than a decade, he was blessed with 7 grandchildren who all adore their Avô. Above all else, Florentino was a wonderful Husband, Father and Grandfather.

They began to visit Graçiosa for extended periods of time in their retirement, enjoying well-deserved, peaceful holidays in their pastoral home on Terra do Conde. After nearly 50 years in Canada, they returned to Graçiosa as residents of the nursing home in Praia where they were lovingly supported when the effects of Alzheimer’s disease took hold of Germina, and later Parkinson’s to Florentino.

Florentino was predeceased by his parents João Silva and Juvina Santos, his sister Livramento and brother Albertino.

He is survived by his cherished wife Germina and his children Leonor, João Manuel, and Livramento; and their respective spouses Joseph Rebelo, Jane Ruhl and Douglas Murray. He was adored by his seven grandchildren; Evan Rebelo, Spencer Rebelo, Evelyn da Silva, Maria Murray, Olivia Rebelo, Henry Murray and Andrew da Silva.
He is also survived by his brother Brivaldo Silva (Ildete), brothers-in-law; Antonio Espinola, Franciso Silva (Joselinda) and sisters-in-law; Lourdes Silva, Ludevina Silva, Maria Melo, Francelina Lorenzo (Frank) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Vila da Praia who so lovingly cared for Florentino for over 7 years.

Funeral Services took place on Friday August 23 at the parish of Nossa Senhora do Guadalupe and his body laid to rest at the Cemitério de Guadalupe in Graciosa, Azores. The family is indebted to Agência Funerária Canadinhas for their assistance and care.

Lastly, the family would like to thank their extended family and friends from Graciosa, Canada, the United States, the UK, and Australia, for their love and support at this difficult time.

_____________

Deixa ainda o irmão Brivaldo Silva (Ildete), cunhados; Antonio Espinola, Franciso Silva (Maria Joselinda) e cunhadas; Lourdes Silva, Ludevina Silva, Maria Melo, Francelina Lorenzo (Frank) e muitas sobrinhas, sobrinhos e primos.

My deepest condolences to the Silva family. Mr Silva was a wonderful man. I will forever remember his beautiful smile and wonderful sense of humour. I was lucky enough to enjoy some of the best food of my life in their home during my university years and for years following. His warm welcome was an highlight of every visit. I especially loved the twinkle he would get in his eyes when he was teasing me or laughing at a joke. Memsagem de condolências. With love, Michelle and Brad Bergin. And Pauline and Raymond Laverdiere.
