Flick, You were an inspiration to me as a young anaesthetist in the mid 90s. Your patient-centred approach to our work in pain management subsequently prompted me to write several grants looking at post thoracotomy pain. Your cheerful outlook made the long nights shorter, and your sense of fun percolated through everybody at Harefield. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have known and learned from you. Love, Andrew

Flick was an inspirational nursing role model who was deeply respected by all who knew her. As a Journal Editor, where I knew her best, she was always thoughtful, generous and kind with her feedback and guidance. It was an honour to have known her. She will be hugely missed but not forgotten.

We have known & loved Flick since we first met over thirty years ago! We’ve had wonderful times together , skiing, sightseeing and many wonderful long lunches in L’Ogenblik , and shopping in Galeries Royales Saint Hubert Brussels. She was always engaging and interested in family progress and success. She had the most amazing ability to care. We will miss her terribly. With love from all the Linters.

Flick you have done so much for nurses and nursing over many years at Harefield and also within the wider nursing community - thank you - you will be greatly missed. We have worked together in my different clinical and RCN / Staff Side roles over many years, including job matching with the help of the all important chocolate biscuits / brownies! A valued colleague and friend over a number of years with a mischievous sense of humour and always there to help / support when required.

The world of pain management, nursing and clinical leadership lost a stalwart. You will be fondly remembered and missed. Rest in peace Flck. x

Although I never had the chance to meet her in person, she selflessly agreed to join my study advisory group and offered guidance via email, even while she was unwell. Her kindness, generosity, and commitment to supporting students left a lasting impression on me. My deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.

Dear Flick
I was so sad to hear of your passing, yet so proud to read the impact you made professionally, and the memories you made personally. I rocked up to Harefield 21 years old, and your kindness, humour, warmth and I have to say, incessant sarcasm from both yourself and John made me feel so welcome. I cannot hear the song Delta Dawn, without a laugh, fond memories of that period of my life, and still sing the lyrics you taught me (and everyone else). You will never be forgotten and rest peacefully, beautiful lady.

Flick was instrumental in getting me started in perfusion in 1992 leading to a wonderfully enjoyable career for which I am forever grateful.
Working with Flick and John in Harefield in the 1990's was the highlight of my life and Flick was an example to us all. I am so grateful that I got to see Flick one last time last year and was reminded of her fortitude and positivity that marked her as a special person.
I will never forget her.

Dearest Flick
What a wonderful light you have been in the world. An inspirational Nurse, leader and networker. You made such a difference to so many people who knew you and to those who did not, but who benefitted from your commitment, dedication and enthusiasm.
We met in 1997. You were appointed to lead the Acute Pain Management Project at Harefield, and I was appointed as the research consultant. The last project we worked on together, was just a year ago.
Over the years you have been an inspirational friend. Thank you for stretching my mind, the jobs you increasingly allocated to me(!) and the people I met through you. Most of all thank you for being my friend, for your kindness, thoughtfulness, the laughter and the fizz.
With thoughts and prayers to John, your family and friends.
Love, Dee

Flick made such an impression on me. 20 years ago a fabulously styled Flick in welcomed me to Harefield and insisted on taking me shopping in Ealing Broadway and she kept her promise. She was a friend, coach and mentor, always pushing me to do a little bit more than i was doing. She always had a joke or two for me most mornings i caught in the car park. She was such a light in our lives. God's speed Flick!

Flick was a wonderful lady who made me feel so welcome when I joined GSTT and was always there to support me and others. Her passion for developing nurses' research skills and of course for her expertise in pain were outstanding and she carried out her work always with a smile and a willingness to partake in a glass of good wine (outside work hours of course)!

We will always remember Flick as the beautiful, cheeky, free-spirited person that brought light and joy to everyone with whom she interacted.
Through an incredibly tough life Flick maintained a caring attitude to those around and ensured that they and her got the most from a life so tragically cut short. The world will be poorer for the loss of this beautiful person.

Flick – you were the most passionate, dedicated, smartest, warmest, funniest and most open-hearted person I have met in the pain and healthcare world. And what an inspiration you are for others following your career and resilience in your personal journey!
You welcomed me so many years ago into the BPS and I loved accompanying you on committees and projects. You were always so interested in other people and the details of their lives – something which only people with such a deep humanity as you, can offer.
We are truly missing a star.

Flic was well known amongst perioperative practitioners as an expert on pain mangement for patients undergoing surgery. I was privileged that she co-authored a chapter in the Surgical First Assistant: Essentials of Practice Book. With this and her other publications she leaves a legacy for all future practitioners and will forever continue to improve patient care.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Flick, Secretary of the SIG Acute Pain of IASP — and a true inspiration to so many of us.
Flick was far more than a dedicated professional. She was a driving force within our community: thoughtful, reliable, and deeply committed to improving pain care. She believed strongly in multidisciplinary collaboration and lived that belief every day — bringing together clinicians, researchers, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, and many others with respect and genuine curiosity. To Flick, pain management was never the responsibility of one discipline alone, but a shared mission.
Her knowledge of pain was remarkable. Flick had a rare ability to understand a wide range of pain conditions and to translate that understanding into practical, compassionate approaches to care. She was generous with her expertise, always willing to help, always ready to share, and always encouraging others to grow.
But perhaps what we will remember most is who she was as a person. Flick had a wonderful sense of humour, an open heart, and an extraordinary gift for connecting people. She made others feel seen and included. She created warmth in every room she entered, and she built bridges wherever there were gaps.
Flick’s presence shaped our SIG and our broader pain community in lasting ways. Her legacy will live on in the collaborations she fostered, the people she inspired, and the kindness she showed so naturally.
We will miss her deeply.
And we will remember her always.

A bright light in any room, any conversation, any gathering. Flick always brought warmth, energy, compassion, intellectual prowess and humour. These often came in useful when she was keen to garner a review, tackle a project or a get a small job completed. It was difficult to decline an invitation. Her contributions to pain management and nursing stand out as exemplary. Flick was truly a beautiful soul and will be hugely missed.

This one has hit hard — who did not know of, or love, Flick? She was an inspiration to so many. Her passion for advancing pain awareness and her tireless commitment to the pain community carried us all. Her legacy reached far beyond any single role or organisation. Through her dedication to pain care, education and professional development, she elevated the work of nurses and clinicians across the UK and internationally, while consistently championing the voices and contributions of others.
Above all, her legacy lives in how she touched people. Her integrity, warmth, generosity and humanity set a standard to aspire to. Flick was known for her kindness, intelligence, humour and unwavering encouragement. She made people feel seen, supported and valued — a rare and lasting gift.
The pain field has lost an extraordinary advocate and leader, and many have lost a mentor, colleague and friend. My thoughts are with her partner John, her family, and all who are grieving. Flick’s influence will continue to live on through the people she inspired, supported and brought together. Flick, you are truly missed

We will all miss her terribly, not only as a friend but as a mentor and a passionate advocate for pain services and pain nurses.
Thank you, Flick, for everything. You have been a huge source of inspiration. I will especially miss sharing glasses of wine, stories and shopping on conference trips we were lucky enough to enjoy over the years.
Now you rest.

Like many have extolled, a truly remarkable individual, with whom I enjoyed many a drink and a fag.
A major professional contribution was her establishment of the British Journal of Pain, and as it's inaugural editor it's development. Flick's vision was enabled by her persuading both SAGE and myself, as treasurer of the BPS, to come to a mutually satisfactory financial arrangement.

Flick.. what an inspiration, what a woman and what an incredible Nurse. Thank you for all your support and hilarious wit.. fly high - how lucky we were to have had you at Harefield

January 30, 2026
Flick has been a fixture of pain management in the UK and beyond forever. She has championed pain as a speciality and supported pain nurses, trainees, researchers and others. Her immense good humour, wit and conviviality have lit up many a pain meeting, and she has maintained that bright positivity even when she was going through her very difficult health struggles - nobody would have known. Her common sense, wisdom and experience inspired many, and her ability to make connections (and then name-drop the big hitters) was second to none. I shall miss her hugely, and miss our shared bottle of bubbly in Pain World Congress host cities. It won't be the same without her. A wonderful friend.

I am at a total loss for word at this sad news. Flick's passing is such loss to her patients, her colleagues and her friends. The greatest loss, however, is to soul mate John Farrimond.
Her career leaves a massive contribution which will endure and benefit so many patients in the future.

What sad news to hear of Flicks passing. I first really connected with Flick on a coaching course. She was larger than life, super funny, very supportive and really made you feel like you were important when you connected with her. She will be remembered by all she touched. My deepest sympathies for her family.
