Obituary

Evelyn Opal Watts passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024. She was born on June 5, 1922, on Hinkle Mountain, Milam, WV to Harry Brake and Florence (Simon) Brake.

Evelyn graduated from Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville, MD in 1940. Following graduation, she worked at Christ Child Children’s Home and then as a Telephone Switchboard Operator. In the ’70s and ’80s, she worked as a receptionist at WJLA, Channel 7 in Washington, DC before retirement.

Evelyn met and married James Glen Watts Sr. in 1945, and they were married 32 years before James died.

In 1949 Evelyn dedicated her life to Jehovah God and spent the next 75 years sharing Bible truths with others. She was a member of the Orchard Hills Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hagerstown, MD. She loved travel and words; she was a ‘ruthless’ Scrabble player.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband James, sons James and Michael Watts, grandson James Watts III, granddaughter-in-law Sandra Watts, great-grandson James Watts IV, her parents Harry and Florence Brake, brothers Vernon and Wayne Brake, and sister Arvella Crosby.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Diane Hazard (husband Bob) and Sherry Lemke (husband Francisco Rojas-Benitez). Also, by her grandchildren: Christopher Watts (wife Joanne), Jessica Vandergrift (husband Kevin), Kelly Ricchini, Katie Smith, Bethany Plaza, Tamar Rich (husband Andy), Sarah Watts, and Savannah Lemke-Wolfson (husband Zen); 17 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and her younger sisters Carol Strickler and Suzanne Fritz (husband Gene), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Going out in service with her and my son Jonathan, when he was maybe 2. He picked tiny wildflowers and gave her one. Years later, she told us she still carried it in her Bible. Thought that was so sweet.

A memorial celebration will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 30 Nottingham Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740 at 2:30 pm on October 12, 2024. For an option to Zoom the program, please contact the family.

A repass will be held immediately following the service for family and friends by invite.
