Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien

To be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:8

Biography

Late Elder (Engr.) Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien was born on Monday, 18th September 1944, to the family of Late Elder Sunday Andrew-Essien and Late Deaconess Virginia Sunday Andrew-Essien of Nnung Akpaa, Atiamkpat Village, Onna Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Fondly called “Chief” by family members and friends, the nickname originated during his tenure as Chief Engineer at Communication Associates Nigeria Limited (COMSAC). Within the family, older members affectionately called him “Nnah”, while the younger ones fondly referred to him as “Nnanah.” Over time, these endearing names evolved into the title “Chief.” It is important to note that this title was not derived from traditional rulership, although he also held a traditional title later in life.

He was the eldest and first son among five surviving male siblings. His only sister, Obonganwan Imoh Isemin, passed away in 2017.

Education and Professional Career

Late Elder (Engr.) Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien began his early education at the Atiamkpat primary school and then went on to Lutheran High School, Obot Idim, in Ibesikpo Local Government Area, where he obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC). He designed all the school drawings and geographical garden in the Atiamkpat primary school.

He also attended the prestigious P&T school Oshodi where he trained as a telecoms technician and obtained a full technology certificate.

Late Elder (Engr.) Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien then progressed his professional career with the Ministry of Communications, where he served as a Technical Officer. His work took him to various parts of the then Western Region of Nigeria, including Akure and Lanlate.

With the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, he relocated to P&T Uyo, where he continued to serve diligently until the end of the war. His journey from Lagos to Uyo during that turbulent period was particularly dangerous, as he narrowly escaped being killed by Biafran soldiers along the way.

When the war ended in 1970, he left the Ministry of Communications and joined Communication Associates Nigeria Limited (COMSAC) as an Area Engineer. His exceptional technical skills and leadership qualities quickly distinguished him from within the organization.

In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was granted study leave in 1971 to pursue higher education at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he graduated in 1975 with a First-Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Upon graduation, he was reabsorbed by COMSAC, where he continued to serve with distinction. Late Elder (Engr.) Andrew-Essien holds the proud distinction of being the first university graduate and the first professional engineer from Atiamkpat Village.

Demonstrating his unwavering commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth, he later obtained a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos, further broadening his managerial competence and enhancing his leadership capacity.

Despite opportunities to pursue postgraduate studies abroad for his Masters and Ph.D., he chose to remain in Nigeria to train and support his younger brothers, a selfless sacrifice that has yielded lasting fruit in the family’s success today.

Service, Leadership, and Community Impact

The Late Elder (Engr.) Andrew-Essien was deeply committed to the service of God, his community, and humanity. He held key leadership positions in Qua Iboe Church, Surulere, Lagos, where he contributed immensely to church growth and spiritual development.

In 1998 he was the president of Men of Hope association all in Surulere Church. In United Evangelical Church Surulere, Elder (Engr) Essien Andrew-Essien was a secretary from 2000 to 2009 and a Chairman of the Church building committee.

He also served as President of the Atiamkpat Development Union Lagos, throughout his years in the city, fostering unity, progress, and development among his people. Upon returning home, he remained devoted to community service and was appointed Chairman of the Atiamkpat Primary School Committee, a position he held until his passing.

He also served as the Deputy Village Head of Atiamkpat, embodying the biblical principle that “when the righteous rule, the people rejoice.” He also served as a Sunday School teacher at the Lutheran High School.

Late Elder (Engr.) Andrew-Essien was instrumental in changing the family name from Sunday Andrew to Sunday Andrew-Essien, ensuring that the family heritage was preserved and distinct. He was a unifier and peacemaker, who steadfastly maintained the family’s Christian identity and culture. Under his leadership, the larger Andrew-Essien family began a cherished tradition of family prayer meetings twice yearly — in January and July — a legacy that continues today.

Until his passing, Elder Essien Andrew Essien served faithfully in various capacities, including Director of Administration at the United Evangelical Church International Headquarters, Chairman of Church Building Committee at the United Evangelical Church Calebs Camp, President of the Christian Men’s Fellowship of United Evangelical Church Calebs Camp. He introduced ‘one hour with the Lord’ in Calebs camp every second Saturday of the month.

A distinguished Engineer, who rose to prominence in the telecommunications industry through dedication and excellence.

Family and Personal Life

Late Elder (Engr.) Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien was happily married to Deaconess Felicia Andrew-Essien, his beloved wife of over fifty  (50) years. Their union was richly blessed with five children, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, and ten grandchildren.

A devoted Christian, loving husband, caring father, and dedicated grandfather, Chief was deeply admired for his humility, integrity, and unwavering faith in God. His life was a shining example of diligence, discipline, service, and devotion to God, his family, and humanity.

Hobbies, Writings, and Contributions

Beyond his professional excellence, Late Elder (Engr.) Andrew-Essien was a man of many interests. He was a great dancer who even graduated from a dancing school in Lagos, a talent that reflected his zest for life and appreciation for art and culture.

He enjoyed reading, surfing the internet, and gardening. He was also a gifted writer and a regular contributor to newspapers and Christian magazines, where he shared thought-provoking insights on faith, leadership, and personal development.

He authored the highly regarded book, “Origin of Some Church Practices,” in which he examined the historical foundations and spiritual significance of various traditions observed in the Christian church today.

Legacy

Late Elder (Engr.) Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien will be remembered as a pioneer, scholar, mentor, community leader and devout servant of God. His life remains a source of inspiration to all who knew him, a testament to his pursuit of excellence, his thirst for knowledge, and his steadfast dedication to faith, family, and community.

He blazed a trail for generations to come — as the first university graduate and engineer from his village, a unifying force in his community, and a shining example of leadership guided by righteousness.

His legacy endures through the countless lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the light of faith and wisdom he left behind.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.

Rest well papa, you were a great father and this is evident in your family.
You would have been my mentor in the Electrical Engineering field, but my senior co- wife( Unyinme) didn't let me know this until your demise.
Keep resting till we meet to part no more at Jesus's feet.

In Loving Memory of Daddy

John 14:2–3: “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”

Daddy, daddy, daddy… where are you? I searched for you in your room, your favourite sitting area, and even your office workstation where your presence once filled the space with diligence and purpose. I looked everywhere, hoping to feel your presence again, hoping to see you walk through the door and call out to us like you always did. Day after day, night after night, I longed for the sound of your footsteps returning home. But Daddy, you have journeyed to a far more glorious place — the presence of the LORD. You have entered a realm rich in splendour, exceedingly adorned, and illuminated by the radiant light of God’s Glory. Today, Daddy, I choose to celebrate with you — along with the angels in Heaven — for you have entered your eternal mansion, the greatest reward any man can attain. Though my heart feels the weight of your departure, I draw comfort from knowing that you are now surrounded by peace, joy, and divine rest in your heavenly home.

Daddy, you were a father beyond compare. Daddy, I remember you not just as a loving, caring, and kind father, but as a guiding light who shaped the very foundation of who I am. Your life was a testament to quiet strength, deep humility, unwavering faith, and integrity that could not be shaken. You lived sacrificially, always placing others before yourself. You valued truth over deceit, contentment over envy, and gratitude over worldly pleasures. You demonstrated what godly leadership truly means — service, honesty, discipline, and compassion. You faced trials with courage and overcame them through faith, becoming a fearless conqueror strengthened by your trust in Almighty God. I will never forget your encouragement during my own time of trouble. You told me that the same God who overturned your challenges during your COMSAC days would do the same for me because I am your son. And truly, the next day, God proved Himself faithful. Daddy, your faith became a shield for me. I am grateful beyond words.

Daddy, you lived a life of excellence, discipline & humility. You were a rare treasure — a brilliant first-class mind wrapped in humility. You often shared your stories of humble beginnings: going to school with just one pair of slippers yet remaining disciplined, focused, and determined. From those modest beginnings, you rose to become the best in your class, earning multiple scholarships and making Papa Nna profoundly proud. Your brilliance and work ethic naturally paved your way into COMSAC, where you contributed immensely to the growth and expansion of the company across Nigeria. You worked tirelessly — even after returning home from a long day, you would continue at your workstation, ensuring that no responsibility was left undone. Your excellence extended into the church, where you served faithfully as secretary, creating meaningful structures that helped the ministry grow in efficiency and order. Daddy, through your life, you taught us diligence, commitment, and honourable leadership. You were not just my father — you were my mentor, my teacher, and a major influence in my life.

Daddy, precious memories about you are forever treasured. I cherish every memory we shared — watching the news, football matches, documentaries, and our favourite show, The Weakest Link on BBC. We would laugh, analyse, and enjoy those peaceful moments together. Sometimes we bought “chop-chop” to add to the fun and create unforgettable family moments. Daddy, these memories have now become priceless treasures, etched deeply in my heart. I will miss those precious times. I will miss your companionship. I will miss you deeply.

Daddy, your Legacy Lives On. Though your earthly journey has ended, your legacy continues — in the lives you touched, the values you instilled, the faith you demonstrated, and the example you set. Your life remains a testimony of excellence, humility, courage, and unwavering trust in God.
The pain of losing you is immense, but the honour of being your child is far greater.
You were truly exceptional, Daddy — a rare gem, a man of substance, and a blessing from God.
You will forever remain alive in our hearts.

Heavenly Father, We thank You for the precious life of Your son, our beloved Daddy, whom You have now called home to eternal rest. Thank You for the gift he was to our family and to everyone who encountered him. Thank You for his love, his labour, his wisdom, his humility, and his unwavering faith.
Lord, we ask that You comfort our hearts and uphold us with Your peace. Strengthen our family as we carry forward the values he planted in our lives. Help us to honour his memory by living with integrity, excellence, compassion, and trust in You. Grant him eternal rest in Your glorious presence, where there is no pain, no sorrow, and no tears — only joy everlasting.
In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

Daddy, rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord. Though you are no longer with us physically, your love, your legacy, and your light will remain with us forever. Until we meet again — farewell, Daddy.

My Tribute to You: My dear Father -in-Law

When I think of you, the first thing that fills my heart is your gentleness. It wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t forced—it was simply who you were. You carried a quiet strength that made people feel safe, valued, and seen.

You accomplished so much in your life, but what amazes me most is how many hearts you touched along the way, mine included.

Some of my sweetest memories are watching you with your grandchildren—my children. The way your face lit up when they came into the room, the patience and joy you shared with them, the stories you listened to with such warmth. That bond you created with them is still alive today. Every single night, before they go to sleep, they still say goodnight to you. It’s their way of keeping you close, and I know it would mean the world to you.

Your faith was an inspiration. You walked with God steadily and sincerely, never drawing attention to yourself, but always reflecting a quiet, unwavering trust. Being near you reminded me of the kind of peace that only comes from deep belief.

I loved sharing my books with you and hearing your thoughts on then from one generation to the next.

I will always remember your smile—warm, familiar, and so full of kindness. And I can still hear the way you called my name. There was love in your voice every time, and it made me feel welcomed.

I miss you so much, more than I can ever fully express. But my heart is filled with gratitude—gratitude that I knew you, that I loved you, and that you loved me. Gratitude that I was part of your life and your story. And I will forever cherish the blessing of being able to cook what I didn't realise was your last meal. It felt like a small act of love for a man who gave us all so much.

My heart aches, but it is also full: full of memories, full of gratitude, and full of the peace that comes from knowing you are resting now, held in the presence of the God whom you trusted so faithfully. Thank you for everything. I love you, and I always will.

Hi Grandpa,

We miss you so much!! We miss telling you all the funny stories from school and watching you listen and smile.

We miss the way you listened, really listened, like every thing we said mattered.

We miss coming into your room to pray for you. We still do, every night. Every night before bed, we say “Goodnight, Grandpa.” We hope you say goodnight back somehow…

We will love you and will always love you.

Goodnight Grandpa we love you.

Grandpa,

I miss you a lot and I’m so happy that I got to spend your last days with you (and celebrate your birthday)

I will always remember the last hug that I gave you and how it felt. Looking at how much pain you were in made me cry.

When I heard the news about your death, I cried so hard and was sorry that you had to leave, but I also knew that it was time.

I love you and rest in peace.

Grandpa,
I miss you so much. But I’m very thankful that I was able to be around your last days, as well as celebrate your last birthday with you.

I will always remember the last proper conversation we had before you passed. After I came back from the hairdressers and you complemented my hair. But you also called me very pretty, and that really made my day.

I also loved that even though you were in a lot of pain, you always seemed to have a smile on your face. You were such a strong man.

I miss coming home from school and coming to greet you, but thank you for always being there.

Love you lots, Grandpa.

Grandpa, we miss you more than words can say, and we are so grateful for everything you gave us. Whenever you visited, you always brought so much joy into our home. You taught us about patience, hard work, and kindness — not just by telling us, but by living those values every single day.

When we came back from school, you were there to help with our homework. But you didn’t stop there — you played with us, laughed with us, or just sat quietly beside us while we talked. We loved how you would tell us stories from your past and always made time for us, whether we were in the middle of a game or asking endless questions, or just being kids who needed a moment of calm with you. That meant the world to us.

Though you are gone, Grandpa, your legacy is our guiding light. We shall carry your memory with us in everything we do, and shall honor you in the way we treat others and live our lives.
We love you, Grandpa — always and forever.

Daddy… it is difficult to find the words to express the weight of this moment — to speak about you in the past tense, when in my heart you still feel so present, so alive, so near.

You were dependable, patient and kind. You carried yourself with dignity, calmness, and grace. You were a man who believed in order, who believed in doing things the right way, who believed that excellence wasn’t for show but for your own integrity. Every part of your life reflected a sense of responsibility and discipline that left a mark on everyone who knew you.

Your absence has carved an ache that words cannot soften. I miss you so much dad. I miss the comfort of knowing you were just a phone call away. But even in this grief, I choose to be grateful — grateful that I had a father like you, grateful that my children experienced your love, grateful that your legacy is strong enough to outlive your years.

Thank you, Daddy, for the sacrifices we saw… and the countless ones we never saw. Thank you for raising us with intention, with structure, with love rooted in wisdom. Thank you for giving us a name to be proud of, for teaching us values that continue to shape our lives, and for showing us what a life of integrity truly means.
My heart is heavy, but it is also full — full of memories, full of gratitude, full of the lessons that you planted in me. I will carry them for the rest of my life. I will carry you.

Rest well, Daddy. Rest knowing you ran your race with honor, served God faithfully, loved your family deeply, and left behind a legacy that time cannot erase.

I love you, Daddy — today, tomorrow, and always.

A BROTHER SORELY MISSED

I know you will not get to read this, Big Brother, but the world needs to know about a brother so dear and needed.

Bro Nnah, you didn't represent the dreaded first child misfortune as you defied all evil trappings and stood out the dominating first grandchild of Andrew-Essien, the accomplished first child of Elder Sunday and Deaconess Virginia Andrew-Essien and broke barriers to record the first university graduate from Atiamkpat who distinguished himself a First Class honours Engineer from the prestigious University of Ife.

Your 1st class intelligence got you exposed early, and you were not economical with those connections. We got introduced to modernism, and today, we parade top corridors, represented in most countries of the world and the name ANDREW-ESSIEN is respected, courtesy your deliberate and sacrificial leadership.

Brother, you were really the Adam of our family; you gave names and they were adopted by all with ease due to our respect for your judgements. An example is "Namesake", the name you gave to Papa Essien Andrew-Essien. That name was made popular by the family. Papa was really your Namesake till your first daughter, Unyime was born on 8th April, the same date, I, the first daughter of your Namesake, was born.

You led the family uniquely that our husbands became Andrew-Essiens with all commitments except the name change. Every family gathering you called was attended by them when releasing us to attend would have sufficed. Your distinctive leadership bound us till cousins are known for record purposes, otherwise, we are brothers and sisters. That last moment we shared eben ye abakpa (pear and corn) before your trip to UK consoles.

We became the ideal family that many patterned after given our homogeneous entity. It remains our pride till date, and we promise to keep the bond of unity till we see Jesus who divinely helped this experience when he found a ready, accommodating and tolerable vessel in you.

You did well to maintain your faith based on the Family Anthem you raised for the Andrew-Essiens:

"For this God is our God,
Forever and ever
He will be our Guide
From now even unto the end."

Good night, courage brother, our trail blazer and unifier. Enjoy your eternal rest while you report the advancements of the Andrew-Essiens to those who transited to eternal glory earlier.

Senior Uncle as we fondly called him, was such a gentleman, always had a smile on his face and handled the role of family “chief” with such ease and poise.

We will miss his humor, gentleness and leadership. Rest on, Senior Uncle, even though we will surely miss you, I bet you are enjoying the presence of the Lord in Heaven and we will surely see you again.

Although I never had the privilege of meeting your dad in person, I feel honoured to witness the part of him that lives on through you. Your organisation, thoughtfulness, and steady character reflect the kind of man he must have been — devoted, disciplined, and guided by strong values.

From all I’ve learned, he was a devoted Christian, a compassionate soul, and a true family-oriented man. A life lived with such faith and love leaves a lasting imprint, not only on those who knew him closely but also on those—like me—who came to know him through the lives he shaped.

I pray that God comforts you and your family in this season, and that you find strength in the beautiful legacy he has left behind. May his gentle and faithful soul rest in perfect peace.

Even with his towering achievements, Chief was indeed a gentle spirit—humble and profound. Always smiling and cheerful, he made time to attend every family function and consistently led “Team Andrew-Essien.” Chief was our pride. His calm demeanor and insightful advice were always reassuring.

It was a joy to know we had a big brother in Maryland, just next door. And even after he relocated home, we always made time to visit him whenever he came to Lagos.

We will always miss Chief, but we are consoled by the fond memories we carry of him. His life remains a blessing, and his legacy continues to inspire.

Uncle was a prudent, diligent man who led by example. Always calm and rational, he was like a lighthouse on a dark stormy night. I'll miss his warm smile that crinkled his eyes, his prayers, his gentle pat-pat on the back. Memories from Maryland, Atiampkat, and Mbioto are even more precious now because we won't get to see Uncle again.
Rest well, Uncle. We will meet again on the other side...

Daddy was the embodiment of calm and kindness. He loved books deeply, and every conversation we shared about them brought me such genuine joy. Those moments are memories I will always treasure.

He was calm, steady, and incredibly hardworking. A quiet strength that shaped everyone around him. I see that same resilience, goodness, and dedication reflected so clearly in all his children. It is a true testament to the life he lived and the love he poured into his family.

The world has truly lost a great man, but his impact, his values, and his warmth will continue to live on in every life he touched.

Your presence is deeply missed, but it will never be forgotten.

Rest well Sir.

A Tribute to Engr. Essien Andrew-Essien
With deep sorrow yet profound gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved Big Brother, Engr. Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien, who recently passed into eternal glory. His departure leaves a void that words cannot fully express, but his memory remains a beacon of strength, grace, and inspiration for all who knew him.
Chief, as he was fondly called, was a pace setter in so many ways. He was an exceptional leader whose life reflected discipline, determination, and purpose. His early academic achievement, obtaining a First-Class degree in Engineering at the University of Ife, was remarkable and became an example that inspired the rest of us. In generosity, he was outstanding, giving his resources, especially his time, knowledge, and compassion, freely. His house in Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos, was an anchor point for many family members who visited Lagos when he was there. His presence at every family gathering galvanized unity, for he never failed to show up, support, and encourage everyone around him.
Beyond his personal achievements and remarkable qualities, what stood out most was his spiritual commitment. He led the family with firm and unwavering faith, reminding us through both word and example that God remains our anchor in all seasons of life. He carried himself with humility, dignity, and kindness – qualities that endeared him to young and old.
As we bid farewell to this wonderful personality, we take solace in knowing that he rests in the loving arms of his Creator. His legacy lives on in the values he taught us, the paths he opened, and the love he shared so generously.
May the memory of our dear Big Brother, Engr. Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien continue to inspire us and remind us of the beauty of a life well lived. Rest peacefully, beloved Chief. Yak unwana mfo akaios ayama. Yes, your light will never fade.

An American poet Emily Dickinson said that _“immortality is to live in the heart of those you loved”_. In my heart “Chief” is immortal. His immortality for me began when I was a poor student at the Law School in Lagos and he gave me a home. He taught me the real meaning of an elder brother. He was the person who advises without judging, who supports expecting nothing in return. Indeed Chief for me is unforgettable for his love was sincere, selfless and real. Chief was my role model, quiet and unassuming, a leader who was easy to follow, a brother I will sorely miss. Chief is gone, but in my heart he is immortal.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR DEAR BROTHER, "CHIEF".
Chief and I shared a unique distinction in our family: he was the first grandchild of Andrew Essien Akpa Umoren, and I was the last. Chief was, by default, a leader and a pioneer, while I became the “privileged” last born of our generation.

Privileged, I would say, because through Chief and the others before me, I was blessed with many good examples and countless pioneering strides to follow. Perhaps the first of Chief’s legacies was giving our grandfather the affectionate nickname Ate, which we all lovingly adopted without question. It was also Chief who proposed that we use the compound name Andrew-Essien, thereby immortalizing our grandfather. Today, woven into that identity is the pursuit of excellence, godliness, and upright character—values that Chief himself lived out and modeled for all of us who came after him.

Chief’s greatest legacy lies in his deep sense of family and community. He was present at every milestone occasion, celebrating with us, encouraging us, and leading from the front at all times. His life was a testimony of faith, humility, and service.

We will miss Chief greatly, yet he lives on in each of us whom he influenced. His example continues to guide us, and his legacy remains a light for generations to come.

Tribute to My Beloved Brother-in-Law
**Late Elder Engr. Essien Sunday Andrew Essien**
It is still difficult to accept that you are truly gone. Seeing your posters and burial announcements brought tears to my eyes and reminded me that life’s journey is indeed brief. You were not just my brother-in-law — you were a father figure, a mentor, and a man of deep wisdom and grace.
Your humility, calm nature, and love for peace spoke louder than words. You lived a life of faith, integrity, and service to God and humanity. You carried yourself with quiet strength and led by example — never seeking attention, yet always leaving an impact wherever you went.
You were a blessing to everyone around you, a light to the family, and a pillar of strength to all who knew you. Your words of encouragement, your prayers, and your godly lifestyle remain an inspiration that can never fade.
Though our hearts are heavy and our eyes filled with tears, we are comforted by the assurance that you have gone to rest in the bosom of the Lord whom you served faithfully. Heaven has indeed received one of its own — a faithful soldier of Christ.
Sleep on, dear Elder Engr. Essien Sunday Andrew Essien.
Your memory will forever remain alive in our hearts.

Rest peacefully till we meet to part no more.
With love and fond memories,
From your sister-in-law, Elder(Mrs) Idara Andrew Essien..

Grandpa,
You were one of the most caring and intelligent people I’ve ever known. As your first grandchild, I always felt a special bond with you,a kind of love, pride, and guidance that shaped so much of who I am today.

You always told me you’d be at my university graduation, cheering me on from the front row, and I carry that promise with me every single day. It’s one of the many memories that continues to inspire me to keep going and to make you proud.

Your calm and gentle spirit was something truly unique. I never once heard you raise your voice. You carried yourself with such grace, wisdom, and quiet strength that it naturally made everyone around you feel at peace.

You taught me so many things through your words, through your actions, and even through the way you lived your life with humility, patience, and dignity.

Even though it hurts deeply to know you’re no longer here with us, I find comfort in believing you are resting in a better place with God in Heaven. I know you’re watching over us, still guiding, still loving, still protecting in your own gentle way.

Thank you, Grandpa, for all the love, wisdom, and warmth you poured into my life. Thank you for the stories, the laughter, the encouragement, and the quiet moments that now mean more than ever. I will carry your legacy in everything I do.

Grandpa, you had a personality that everyone loved. From the day I was born, I’ve always looked up to you and admired everything you did. You were smart, outgoing, and your sense of humor was something truly special to me, something I will never forget.

I could say so much more about you, but it would take years to finish, because that’s how amazing you were to me. Losing you was so painful, but I know you are resting in a better place now. I will forever miss you.

TRIBUTE TO MY BROTHER.

Chief, your death has created a vacuum I know very well that it is difficult to fill. I am not against your going home to be with the lord but it is too sudden. I was not satisfied with your love, care, advice, examplary lives. The lovely times we spend together in your house, office,at conferences and at evenings with the children,I was looking for more but it's ended unexpectedly. The news of your demise is hard to swallow.Nevertheless I am grateful to God who called you home at it's time when the ovation was high on all sides. You have left some footprint on the sand of time. Thank you for giving us a unique identity, the strong bond of unity established among the Andrew -Essiens .

TRIBUTE TO MY ELDER BROTHER
My late brother, Elder (Engineer) Essien Sunday Andrew-Essien fondly called Chief by all, was amazing. He took after his father; he served as an elder in Qua Iboe Church like his father (before the change of name to United Evangelical Church) and decided to be sincere and hard-working and content. Though these attributes are rather unpopular in this age they were my brother’s watchword. My brother, friend and counsellor led a remarkable and fruitful Christian life worthy of emulation. His enthusiasm for the things of God were infectious. Transparency and candor in dealing with people made him a natural leader of men and affairs. He never let down those who entrusted leadership upon him whether in the circular (family, Community, business, Clubs) or Spiritual (Church, Fellowships). Today, I can testify that all Andrew-Essien’s following after you and exhibit the rarest virtue of hard work, discipline, courage and civility which are part of the legacies you left us.
I can recall the days when we were growing up and encouraging ourselves even in the face of abject poverty, that God will bring our family to visibility through us. Your determination fueled mine, we both left to the University without being sure of where the fees would come from. God surprised us. Here we are today. The compound name “ANDREW-ESSIEN” we designed together as undergraduates is gaining visibility and you are leaving the world. The future is very pregnant. We always agreed to change oppressive and fetish traditions together and that without any noise. You left the family so much better (higher standard of living, better educated, better travelled, better sense of belonging, closer knitted) than when you came. Thank God you came to show the way.
You always backed me up. I cannot forget those PASSAT trips from Enugu to UNIBEN to find the love of my life. Your love and support for me helped me to marry early. Your respect for my wife, made her integration very easy
You had the grace to answer all questions on behalf of the family we loved your style. We will miss you real. Esiere-o

Dear Mr.Mfon

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of your father. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I’ve often reflected on the impact you had on my journey, especially during those early days when I was still trying to understand the Nigerian work environment. Your kindness, patience, and willingness to guide me made all the difference.

You didn’t just mentor me — you believed in me and helped me discover my path in architecture, especially my passion for project management. Those acts of support shaped my career and continue to inspire me today.

As you honour your father’s memory, I pray you find strength, comfort, and peace. May his legacy live on through the values he instilled in you — the same values you’ve shared so generously with others, myself included.
Please know that my thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,

TRIBUTE TO MY BROTHER AND FRIEND -ELDER(ENGR) ESSIEN SUNDAY ANDREW -ESSIEN.
OWO!!! as we fondly called ourselves. We met at the University of Ife (now called Obafemi Awolowo University)in October 1971 and became brothers. We were in the same department and faculty where we studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering. You made a first class degree in 1975 - a rare fit at the University of Ife at that time. You were diligent, hardworking, honest and kind in everything you set yourself to do.
I cannot forget my regular visits to your house at the Maryland Estate residence and your office at Communications Associates in Ikeja, Lagos. I was completely at home when we were together. At your 80th. birthday celebration I was given the opportunity to propose your toast and say a few words about you.
Words are inadequate for me to express the personal loss that my family and I feel. I hereby testify to the world that you were a perfect Christian that loved God and and a gentleman.
May the good Lord grant us all the fortitude to bear this loss.
Rest in peace my friend and brother.

TRIBUTE TO AN ICON

Uncle Andy as we fondly called you, was an icon. A man who never looked for praises. A man who never boasted of his achievements, he just went on quietly working for his loved ones.

He was there for us as a firm foundation through our turbulent times. A sturdy hand we held on to in times of stress and strife.

A good man we turned to when times were good or bad. Indeed you were one of our greatest gift and blessing to us as a family. We will surely miss you.

A Tribute to a True Father — Engr. Sunday Andrew Essien

Daddy, today I honour you, not just as a man, but as a quiet giant. You were more than a father-in-law to me; you were a true father in every sense of the word.

In my lowest moments, you stood by me, never with judgment, but with calm wisdom and genuine concern.

Your words carried weight; they didn’t just advise, they healed, redirected, and built me up. Through your life, you showed me what strength in simplicity truly means.

You carried a rare grace, the kind that didn’t seek attention but made an impact in silence. Your contentment was never weakness; it was power, deeply rooted in peace and understanding.

Your counsel reshaped my outlook on life and taught me to walk with purpose and humility. You were a good man, Daddy, the kind whose memory will never fade.

You live on, not only in the stories we share, but in the values and love you planted in our hearts.

Rest well, Daddy Andrew Essien. You may have fallen asleep, but your legacy remains alive, especially in me.

Forever honoured.
Forever grateful.
Forever missed.

Words alone are not enough to express all that I feel. You were not just an employer, but a father sent from heaven to bless my life. It breaks my heart that you left earlier than anyone expected, without a sign, without a word, and without a chance for us to help save you. Take heart, dear Landlady.
May God comfort and strengthen you through this difficult time.

Your husband was a true peacemaker — calm, gentle, and ever considerate. His very presence eased tension and brought warmth to those around him. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel at home, and staying in his property was more than just accommodation — it was an experience of kindness, care, and genuine humanity.

Whatever concerns I had in the apartment, he handled them with grace, humility, and orderliness — never with a single complaint. His compassion and quiet strength spoke volumes about the kind of man he was: one who found joy in serving others and spreading peace wherever he went.

I am truly grateful that our paths crossed. He lived a life that reflected gentleness, selflessness, and integrity, and his memory will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peac.
To the family he left behind, may God comfort you, strengthen you, and help you carry on his beautiful legacy of love, unity, and peace.

My Presido
It is still hard to believe that my friend of over 30 years is no more. Waking up that Thursday Morning to wish you the usual birthday met with a disturbing message which later was to end in your passing a few days later.
We met in Church in 1990. We became friends almost immediately when wecame to know we shared the same professional calling and through the same teachers at the University. You brought your sense of humility, intellect and mentorship to bear on my life as senior colleague and friend. We were seen working together in almost all departments of the Church particularly in the Church Secretariat, Building maintenance and Construction. Our friendship created jealousy and envy among some members in the Church. But you were never deterred.
I will for ever owe a lot of gratitude to your leadership qualities, your mentorship and your humble Christian disposition encapsulated in patience, tolerance and hard work. Today, it is hard to discuss United Evangelical Church Surulere without your name. Even your later stint at the National Office has left a lasting legacy. The respect you earned from siblings and family members left many to talk and wonder about you.
Since it has pleased the Lord to call you home, we are sure you are resting in His blossom. We can only bow to His perfect will.
Good bye my Presido as I used to call you. Rest well till we meet at the resurrection morning. It is well.

Dearest Uncle Andy, it is sad that you have left your loved ones behind, but we are glad that you are dancing with the angels now.
You were very kind, peaceful and compassionate.
You loved and served God passionately and it reflected in your life.
While growing up, I used to enjoy going to Maryland because you treated us like we were your children. When our dad was on sick bed for several years when we were very young, you were there for us, teaching, guiding and praying for us.
I remember the early morning devotions and how you gave us Bible lessons afterwards. Then you allowed us each of us read and give lessons from the Bible passages too.
You had dialogues to settle issues when they arose. You were truly a peacemaker.
You chose others above yourself and made sacrifices for everyone's betterment.
I actually used you as a yardstick when I was old enough to have a life partner because of your calm and collected disposition and we all saw the way you treated my Aunty YS with utmost love, care and devotion and I'm glad I did.
We will forever miss your gentle, kind and peaceful nature.
May your soul continue to rest in perfect peace and may perpetual light shine upon you, Amen.
