Few words
20 DEC 2025: There are few words to mark the passing of one so loved.
Everyone will have moved on after a year. Things to do, places to be, lives to live . . . As some say, life is for the living.
Looking around, yields the following: you are gone!
Not in this room or that room. Not sitting in your chair. Not making those funny noises or singing that little song. Not smiling that big smile with big hands open to life.
No, no longer. Wherever you are you are no longer here.
Selfishly, those who love you want you back. Your calm command, your charming way and intellectual prowess are infinitely missed.
The world is grayer by degrees, like your silvery blue eyes on a darkened day.
There are no take backs, no do overs, no workarounds and no solutions. Everything was tried and tried again.
Some things worked for a moment and like “momentary”, then too they were gone.
It was only a few moments, a few words, a few places and so few memories and now you are gone.
We miss the mammoth you in this now tiny gray world.
These are a few useless words to mark your passing.

My friend, Eric. The earth is a lesser place without you in it. Nonetheless, the mark you left will forever be in our hearts. You are and forever will be a great friend and mentor.

Eric,
You are and will be sorely missed. Your dedication to US mariner education and to the improvement of mariner training and assessment for our fleet is unparalleled.
You provided me and others with much knowledge of how to approach this and better equip our mariners for today’s changing technologies. You were very aware of todays educational weaknesses and worked with all of us to make improvements where we were able. Much is left undone; however, you have provided the path forward.
I miss your calm guidance and encouragement but will continue as you have shown us how to proceed. You have been a great mentor and friend.
With reverence and sincerity,
Joe Parsons

I knew Eric from working in the Coast Guard. Eric was instrumental in getting me up to speed when I first started there. As time progressed, Eric and I collaborated on several projects and had a wonderful working relationship.
The Merchant Marine family will sorely miss his wisdom.
My heartfelt condolences to the Malzkuhn family for your loss.
