Tribute made at memorial service held in Cape Town:
Until this week, I was under the impression that I was Mrs Anderson’s favourite student. :) But the discussions that have unfolded since we learnt of her passing I have made me realise that Mrs. Anderson had a rare gift — the ability to make each person she encountered feel special, feel heard, feel cared for, and deeply loved.
At the memorial service hosted by the St Mark’s College community, speaker after speaker shared their personal stories of the positive impact that Mrs Anderson had on them. Many also recalled the passion, vitality, and unrelenting zeal with which she approached everything. Whether they were fellow teachers or students, each person touched by her, had a personal story of transformation.
Over 2,300 of Mrs. Elisabeth Anderson’s former students have visited the memorial page we set up in the last week. Many have shared heartfelt messages recounting their experiences with her — stories filled with gratitude, love, and awe. As I read through them, I felt overwhelmed, even inadequate, to address this gathering today, trying to capture the magnitude of her impact. I invite you to visit the tribute page yourself and witness the legacy of a truly extraordinary person.
As I have grown older, I have personally grown to appreciate the bold choices she and her husband Peter made, leaving the comfort and familiarity of Cape Town to serve in rural Sekhukhuneland. The sacrifices made, were a response to what can only be understood to have been a calling. Their selflessness and commitment to a life of purpose and serving changed the cause of history for many of us and left an indelible mark on generations. As I look at my own children, who have had opportunities that many dream of, I know without a doubt that it would not have been possible had it not been for Peter and Elisabeth Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson instilled in so many of us a love for reading, for books, for learning, for culture. Her approach to education was holistic, bespoke in that it acknowledged our individual talents and was empowering to each one of us — we felt equipped to sit at any table, anywhere in the world, and engage as equals. For many of us, the only books we had known before meeting her were school textbooks or perhaps the Bible. But she opened new worlds: from *Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs* to *The Lord of the Rings*, from fairy tales to Shakespeare. She even taught us to sew, to knit, and even ran an aerobics class — always finding new ways to enrich our minds and lives.
For me personally, my life truly began when I arrived at the St Mark’s College of Peter and Elisabeth Anderson. Until then, school was a place my parents forced me to go — a place associated with fear and corporal punishment. The idea that a school could be a sanctuary, a nurturing space where love and care flourished, was inconceivable to me. But Peter and Elisabeth created such a world — one where I believed I could be anything, and that the world was mine to explore.
When Nelson Mandela was released from prison, one of the first places he visited was St Mark’s College. I was selected to speak at the event. After my speech, Nelson Mandela hugged me and told me that one day, I would be the President. And I believed him — because the world Peter and Elisabeth had created for me made me believe anything was possible. The Andersons saw potential where many had doubt. Like many other students from St Mark’s College, I have gone into leadership roles and continue to tap into what I learnt from the school.
When I heard about the passing on of Mrs Anderson, I was in Washington DC, at a dinner at the Library of Congress, and debating the implications of the changing world order in relation to the industry I am involved in - and was reminded of her history lessons. That is the power of big thinking that Elisabeth Anderson imparted on me.
To you, Pippin our sister, and to your siblings — thank you for sharing your mother with us. Her life was a gift, and her legacy lives on in every one of us who had the privilege to be taught, loved, and inspired by her.
May her soul rest in peace and rise in power!

The Talk at St Marks memorial service
“ Good afternoon everyone,
Today, we gather to honor the memory of Mrs Anderson , a woman whose choices and dedication shaped not just a school, but countless lives within our community.
Thirty-nine years ago, when our school was barely finding its footing in just its second year of existence, Mrs Anderson made a decision that speaks volumes about her character. She left behind a privileged position to come to our rural community—not for prestige or comfort, but because she saw potential where others might have seen limitation.
I stand before you to speak on behalf of generations of students whose lives were forever changed by her commitment. Her choice to join our fledgling school wasn’t just a career move—it was an act of service that created ripples we continue to feel today.
In those early days, she wasn’t just administering a school; she was helping to build its foundation. The values that have become hallmarks of our alumni—[values like academic excellence, community spirit, lifting others; service etc.]—were cultivated under her watchful eye and nurturing guidance.
For many of us growing up in this rural area, education was our pathway to opportunity. Mrs Anderson ensured that our geographic location would never limit our horizons. Through her leadership, our school became not just a place of learning but a beacon of possibility.
Some leaders inspire through grand gestures, while others transform lives through consistent dedication day after day, year after year. Mrs Anderson was the latter—steadfast in her belief that every child deserves quality education regardless of where they come from.
The true measure of an educator isn’t just in what they teach, but in the legacy they leave behind. Today, as we look around this room, we see that legacy in each person whose life she touched—in the careers we’ve chosen, the values we hold dear, and the communities we’ve built.
Robert Frost once wrote:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.
Mrs Anderson took the road less traveled when she came to our school. And that choice has indeed made all the difference—for our school, for our community, and for each of us who had the privilege of being students during her tenure.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we carry forward her commitment to education, her belief in potential, and her understanding that true fulfillment comes not from positions of privilege, but from positions of purpose.
On behalf of all the students whose lives she touched, whether directly or through the institution she helped to shape, I offer our deepest gratitude.
May her spirit of service continue to inspire us all.
Let us send her off with Father Tsebe favourite piece “ For she’s a jolly good fellow, she’s a jolly good fellow ….. and so say all of us!”
May her soul rest in eternal peace and rise in glory.
Thank you.

Not only did Elizabeth set an example and prove inspirational to the students of St Marks but also to us teachers. I have a wealth of memories from a very seminal year at St Marks in 1986. Elizabeth and I unpacking, sorting, covering and cataloguing books from boxes of donations stored in their garage; sharing grief in the night over mugs of hot chocolate following the shocking death of Jessie Malakalaka; sewing classes with Nora Tsebe; freshly baked bread cut in hunks with peanut butter at mid-morning break break in the staff room; Sunday services; working on the Snow White school play; weekend walks through the veld; making marmelade having been given the run of the Anderson kitchen; soaking in a deep bubble bath in their bathroom with my book as relaxation; cups of tea and wide-ranging conversations; freedom to teach history the way I wanted to starting not with Van Riebeeck but the Stone Age… and always with the encouragement and enthusiasm of Elizabeth. As I am again teaching English in a cross-cultural setting and promoting reading as a way to discover different times, places, people, I recognise an echo of earlier times with a special colleague. While she will be missed, so much of her remains in the lives of many!

My first confrontation with Mrs A was within a week of my first year at st Marks . Peter and Elizabeth always insisting on learning the names and pronunciation of them prior to their arrival at school . Having registered as Lehlogonolo, she was hell bound on getting this right . The likes of Prof Rashidi, would come in handy in assisting. On my arrival , I corrected Mrs A and insisted that the “Le” in my name was to be be set at a high pitch ! From magalagape a mosio. So she went around calling me Le- hlogonolo ! Was pretty hilarious. Within a week she picked up that everyone else including my some teacher were calling me Jomo ,🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️? So I said ya, that’s my other name . She didn’t quite find this funny and it kind of set the tone for the next 6 years !
So I call my relationship with MMA Elizabeth, “from 7 dwarfs to seven juveniles “.
Long story, we starred in Snow White and the seven dwarfs in standard 5, to ending up being labels the seven juvenile delinquents who would disturb everyone in our matric year . I will leave to you to figure out the other culprits!
What intrigued me was her relationship with my twin sister . From having starred as the beloved Snow White , to Kgaugelo being Mrs A boss when she moved on from st marks to the national library. It was rather a contrast from my relationship with her But a further demonstration of her love , versatility and General knowledge of all her kids !
Every time I was at crossroads in my life and especially career decisions, she would be amongst the first people I would call . Her wisdom and advise of always putting , love , service and purpose first was always invaluable.
Will miss you a lot Mama E. Hard to imagine you not being amongst us.

Thank you for allowing God to use you a vessel to impact so many lives. In the Strength of St Mark's College, you co-created a global society nurtured right there in the deep valleys of the Sekhukhuneland; and as if that was not enough, you continued to nurture us in the beautiful city of Cape Town. Who would have thought? Thank you for the 30-year relationship that has transcended age and location. You shall forever and fondly be remembered as a consummate disciplinarian, a historian, a librarian and an ultimate hostess. What a blessing!

Dear Mrs. Anderson
After your virtual memorial service the other day, I was reminded of this song that we used to sing at St. Mark’s years ago. It’s from the gospel of John 13 verse 34-35. This was Jesus speaking to his disciples at the Last Supper.
“A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples if you have love, one for another…”
Hearing and listening to my former schoolmates, who have become family over the last 39 years, I was deeply moved at the realization of your contribution and impact in our lives. What manner of love is this that someone can so selflessly give of themselves to nurture, love and guide a bunch of very young strangers? You really loved us.
There a many memories and stories one can tell about you but I swore to not be longwinded and be to the point as much as I can.
One of my favorite memories of you was when you put up a birthday calendar so we can all celebrate each other’s birthdays. Needless to say, though some may disagree, July was the best month of the year.
We all fondly reminisce about how you pushed us to read, read and read. I remember your patience with each of us when we learnt new words and you would teach us how to pronounce them. Then of course, your impatience and frustration with us when we didn’t return the books on time to the library. Not to mention when we lost them! Tjooo! By the way, I really enjoyed putting the returned library books back on the shelves with you.
One more thing, Mrs. Anderson, I am going to be the one to break it to you. We honestly didn’t like typing but we loved how proud you were of us when we got it right and couldn’t bring ourselves to disappoint you. And yes, jokes were made about you scolding us, over your reading glasses in class: “I’m watching you! Don’t you cheat yourself…” Now we know it was not for you but for us. Thank you.
Personally, I thank you for taking me around the world and beyond through reading. When I finally got to travel and see the world, it felt like I had already been there before because I read. Your belief in me, the most tjatjarag one in the school, motivated me to strive to do and be my best. That little stage outside the old library ignited my dreams and awakened a spirit within me. We had 'theatre' shows, dancing, singing, poetry- all of it, right there. Today, when I am on stage, any stage in the world- I’m always reminded of that stone-bordered, almost flat stage, that started it all.
Thank you Mrs. Anderson for loving us and believing in us. Thank you for keeping us together and encouraging us to have love for each other. The Strength of St. Mark’s is more than a group of former students, it is more than an institution, it’s beyond being called a movement. The Strength of St. Mark’s is Love.
Oh, Mrs. Anderson! Thank you for teaching us that the world was big enough for all of us and yet, small enough to conquer. I see your St. Mark’s children and they’re doing big, great and amazing things because you told them they could. They are leaders, world changers, business people, innovators, pioneers, visionaries and trailblazers. Most of all, they are fathers, mothers and caregivers who do all they do with love and kindness. Do you see Mrs. Anderson, do you see? The seeds you have planted in our lives bear fruit to this day and I hope we continue your legacy to plant seeds in others and in the world that will make living wonderful, fulfilling and worthwhile. We love you, we appreciate you, we honor you and we are all grateful. We thank God for your precious life. You are an invaluable gift and I pray that we continue to make you proud. Thank you Mrs. Anderson, thank you Mama! May your beautiful and loving soul rest in peace.
With all my love,
Rami Chuene, born on 3rd July.
P.S: None of us will be surprised to find a huge library in heaven because we know what you are capable of!

Different faces have tried to get the school back to shape, but your shoes are to big. Mrs Anderson, May Your Soul Rest in Peace. Till we meet again.🕊️🕊️🕊️

When I learnt of your passing, my mind’s eye fixated on you smile, your brisk walking. The sanctuary that was the library and I smiled 😊. You instilled in me the joy of the written and spoken word. Your kindness showed some of us that kindness is strength. Your choice to accept the Jane Furse assignment was a blessing to many of us.
Thank You.
Peace be upon you and your family. Sleep well Mma Anderson.

I'm pretty sure my love for story telling would have remained a mere passion instead of a discipline & expression of who God created me to be had it not been for Mrs Anderson. How do you begin to thank someone for something of that magnitude? The only apt way is to praise her Creator for allowing her life to overflow into yours. LORD, how very generous you are- thank you ever so kindly for Mrs A. We honour you, Mrs A because you were not afraid to love us like a Mum; hope you know this as you passage on past us. We love you.

Tribute to Mrs anderson
Jesus instructed his desciples, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel every creature."
I remember Mrs Anderson's forever presence in the library and her incredible knowledge of books to recommend as well as her encouragement to read. I developed my love for reading because of the libary Mrs Anderson championed. This love for reading extended to my academic studies. This has tremendously helped my academic progress.
This enabled me to reach my potential. St Mark's transformed me.
I don't recall seeing Mrs. Anderson upset, but I remember her politeness and warm smile.
I'm in awe and admire her ironclad support for Mr Anderson.
Mrs Anderson has earned her place in the Kingdom of God because she has obtained full marks for fulfilling the instruction in 1 Peter 4:10 - "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."
You will always be missed and remembered. Your legacy will continue to live through our children.

To a loving mother who captured my heart and brought so much joy and happiness into my life.
To the mother who tolerated my erratic and unstable personality yet still saw a lot of potential in me.
I am thankful for every moment you pushed me and instilled a passion for reading and history. Grateful for the strict parent you were but in the same breath, you still brought calmness in my turbulent life.
Thank you for shaping me into the Hazel I am now. A loving mother, a grammar "inspector" and an avid reader.
Go well Nosisa. Yours was a great innings, a journey well traversed 💔💔💔

Words cannot express how heartbroken we all are about losing such a phenomenal and selfless woman. Mrs A was a mother to us all. Her presence was felt everywhere in the school yard. Every time she entered a room, you’d start questioning yourself and if you had done something wrong. She has played a big role in harnessing my reading & writing skills of the English language. As a child from a humble rural educational background, her library has helped me a lot. I wouldn't have understood half of the words taught at University, had it not been for those books. To this day, I am still crazy about reading books.
Rest in eternal peace, our dear Mother. May the good Lord guide your spirit well unto your next journey.🙏🏽🥰
To the Anderson family, condolences and thank you for sharing her with all of us. 🙏🏽

It will take me an entire day to narrate the immeasurable and absolutely phenomenal contributions you have made to shaping me into the being that I am today.
Our greatest Librarian who instilled not only discipline, but the love of reading from those Junior Ladybird Books to the heavy Encyclopedias...to this day, I still love and prefer to grab a book over anything else in my leisure times.
You and Mr Anderson truly made our upbringing so seamless for our parents and God...and I will forever be grateful.
To Mr Anderson, Peter Jnr and Pippin...you were truly blessed with a Wife and Mother...
Rest in the bossom of God Ma Nosisi.

Your lives as the Andersons was a demonstration of the likeness of Christ. Given the African community you chose to equip with an education and, more importantly, taught prayer during the hard apartheid era. Your hardwork work translated to our wisdom to navigate this life. May the healing hand of the LORD touch your grieving hearts. Morore Mphahlele, St Marks 1993 - 1998

I'm saddened to hear about the loss of an extraordinary educator, mentor and inspiration. Mrs A was more than just a teacher to me, she was a guiding light who ignited a passion for learning, leadership and life itself.
Over the 6 transformative years I spent at SMC, she instilled in me the value of hard work, the courage to speak my mind and the confidence to lead. Her love for history, art, literature and culture was contagious and her lessons extended far beyond classroom walls.
I'll will never forget her kindness, patience and generosity of spirit. Her sharp mind and quick wit made her a formidable presence and her love for good food and conversation made her a joy to be around. Her love for animals and her own pets was a testament to her compassion and empathy. She had a unique gift to make each student feel seen, heard and valued.
As I reflect, on the impact she had on my life I'm reminded of the power of resilience, selfless dedication and unwavering support. She embodied the very qualities she taught us: resilience, perseverance and a growth mindset.
To Mrs Anderson's family I offer my sincerest condolences. May her memories of her love, laughter and legacy bring you comfort and strength during this difficult time.

Mrs Anderson inspired my love for reading. Prior to St Mark's I was not exposed to books. Over 35 years later I still have a vivid image of her at the library. Whenever she would catch us chatting and not reading, we would always hear her say " I am watching you, don't cheat yourself". The foundation that Peter and Elizabeth built in us with so much love and care is immeasurable. May she rest with the Lord. Her legacy lives on. My deepest thoughts to Peter and family.
