Eleanor Perry Blackwell: 1930-2025
Mrs. Eleanor Perry Blackwell went to be with the Lord on February 27, 2025, after finally succumbing to frailty at 94 ½ years of age.
She is survived by her twin daughters Melissia Johnson (Mr. Barney Johnson) of Loganville, Georgia, and Melinda Clements (Dr. Mark Clements) of Cleveland, Georgia. She also leaves behind grandchildren Dr. Isaac Clements (Rebecca Clements) of Marietta, Georgia, Dr. Perry Johnson (Kyrie Johnson) of Ponte Vedra, Florida, Mrs. Christina Newton (Chad Newton) of Peachtree City, Georgia, Dr. Alex Johnson of McLean, Virginia, Mrs. Laura Cooper (Andrew Cooper) of Loganville, Georgia, and Andi Gillis (Jonathan Gillis) of Savannah Georgia. In addition, she had 15 great grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Born during the depression in the small town of Cordova, Alabama, Eleanor was able to rise above her humble beginnings to live a full, happy life. She married L.R. Perry in 1947 and shortly thereafter moved to the Dalraida neighborhood in Montgomery, where she lived 56 years before moving to Georgia to be closer to her children. In the interim, she was widowed in 1981, and was married to Mr. Roy Blackwell of Montgomery from 1992 until his death in 2002.
She was an active member of Dalraida Church of Christ in which she raised her daughters and met Roy. Kindness and service were her fruits of the spirit, which she exercised exceedingly well.
In Montgomery, she worked in the office for Capital City Laundry, where she also wrote a regular column for the Montgomery Advertiser on clothing and fabric care under the pen name “Susan White.” She later worked for Fashionique both in sales and modeling, and Real Estate Finance as a loan counselor.
On a lighter note, Eleanor loved digging in the dirt, raising prize tomatoes, and rescuing neglected plants. Even in her later years, while in assisted living, she took it upon herself to “improve” the landscaping of the facility. She also never met a dog that did not immediately take to her and want her attention. She was an avid Alabama fan going way back to before Bear Bryant’s tenure. Her garden and yard sported wrought iron Alabama “A’s” and concrete elephants, and her bed was decorated with a stuffed Big Al.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, enjoying mutual affection with all six, who called her “Maw.” A memorial service will be held for her on March 8, 2025 at the Lake Laceola Clubhouse in Cleveland Georgia. Her ashes will be placed at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, where a headstone currently exists next to her first husband L.R. Perry.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in her name to one of the following ministries: Good Samaritan Food Ministry, 1220 McEver Road, Gainesville, GA, 30504 or Christian Alliance for Orphans, 6723 Whittier Avenue, Suite 202, Mclean, VA 22101.
