Obituary

Edward Joseph Bonds

January 8, 1933 – June 24, 2025

Edward Joseph Bonds, age 92, passed away peacefully at 2:30 a.m. on June 24, 2025. A devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and son, Edward lived a long and meaningful life rooted in love, faith, and service.

Born on January 8, 1933, in New Iberia, Louisiana, Edward proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his service, he settled in Los Angeles, where he lived for over 60 years and became a quiet but steady force in his family and community.

Edward was a man of deep Catholic faith and an even deeper heart. If you needed help, he’d find a way—no matter what. He was quick to get heated, yes, but just as quick to forgive, to love, and to show up when it mattered most. His strength was matched only by his generosity, and those who knew him could always count on his fierce loyalty and unwavering support.

He was a proud father to Linda Broussard and Eric Bonds; a loving grandfather to Keyla, Kristen, Kacy, and Cameron; and a joyful great-grandfather to Ayla and Kamrun. He was also a beloved son to Edward Sr. and Bertha Bonds, and a cherished brother to Louise, Manville, Ebora, Bertha, and Dora.

Edward loved sports—all of them. Whether watching a game or talking about one, his passion was contagious and brought his family together time and time again.

Edward’s presence was a gift, and his legacy lives on in the lives he touched with his compassion, humor, and strength.

My condolences to Eric and his family on the passing of Mr. Bonds. I knew him during my formative years and he was a great influence on me. He was a good man who treated us with respect and helped to guide us on the path to adulthood. My father was absent from my life, so I leaned on Mr. Bonds for support. And he was always there for me. Rest in peace. And thank you.

One of my most memorable memories of Uncle Edward is when he came to our defense when mama was whopping us and she swung on him too. Thank you for stepping into the line of fire for us. Rest in peace now and love you always.

Uncle Edward, I will always remember you as granny’s little brother who always used to call her or come over and argue her down about which player or team was winning. Now you are all reunited again, watching over, protecting and guiding over all of us. Rest in power Uncle Edward.

Mr Bonds was one of the dads we all respected and would listen to. He was always around and he knew all the kids, he would buy us stuff from the snack bar or ice cream trucks. He would also break up fights between friends and always stop us from doing something stupid from getting in big trouble. Mr. Bonds both my partners are there so you and my pops can have a cold one. Rest well Sir, you were truly appreciated by us all.

I wanted to take a couple of days to think about what I could say about Mr. Bonds my best friends/brother pops as young kids growing up in the old neighborhood. I have so many stories of you and my parents being pillars of our neighborhood. You allowed me to come over and to be a second son to you. I always knew that Mr. Bonds was like my father, and I will never forget that. I remember when Eric and I decided not to play football one year and we were just lost walking up and down the street because everyone else was at practice. You told me I would miss it, and you were right. We only lasted two weeks and you had us back out there. I remember you had the super basketball team and that sport was not my best, but you made me play and worked me hard to get me up to par. I know I was a stud in Football and Baseball as a kid but the best time I ever had was playing on your basketball team. Mr. Bonds my heart is fractured. As a kid I always thought that you, my parents, Mrs. Collins and others that took care of us would live forever. I know that all of the kids in our old neighborhood who are now in there 50s and 60s learned so much from you. You can be proud of what we became and what you instilled in us. As I reflect, I will always think of the super fly look and the voice that made us feel safe. Lastly when I told my pops of your passing it hurt him to the core. He could only say Son, Mr Bonds was a great man, great father and a great friend. We all miss him. Rest in Heaven Mr. Bonds and please be that angel that looks over all of us.
