Drew Moss

Drew Moss was born on February 4, 1954 in Lachine, Quebec and died in Montreal on September 3, 2024. I was fortunate enough to be his common law wife for 41 years. At memorial services talk is often of major events in life or accomplishments but I believe Drew was much more than that and I wanted to give those who knew him a chance to share all the small moments which made him so special. I chose this form of memorial for a couple reasons. Many of those who knew him are now scattered around the world and it would be difficult to all get together. More important than that though, is the matter of time. I expect many of us will remember things about him over a long period of time and by setting this up, memories can be added at any time. Maybe a year from now something will happen that causes you to remember something about Drew. I ask that all these memories be shared amongst us, no matter when they occur to you. The author Justin Cronin wrote that “As long as we remember a person, they're not really gone. Their thoughts, their feelings, their memories, they become a part of us.” I believe Drew will always be with me in some form and I hope he’s heading for sunshine.

Obituary

Drew passed away in his home town of Montreal, Quebec at the age of 70 after losing his battle with cancer.

He leaves behind his loving life-long partner of 41 years, Patricia Hales. He will be missed by his three sisters, Dacia Moss (Chuck), Cindy Moss (Caesar, deceased), Pamela Moss (Michel), and his brother Michael Moss (Sheila), as well as his brothers-in-law Bernard (Barbara deceased), Douglas (Nicky), sister in law Heather (Lee), and his nephews Ari, Lucas (Corie), Adrian (Colleen), David (Bethany) Stephen (Jessica), Christopher and nieces Allison (James), Amanda (Michael), Brenda (Andrew), Sandra (Chris), Katherine (Kevin).

Drew earned his Bachelor of Commerce at Concordia University, Montreal and went on to have a successful career working in the finance departments of several companies in Quebec and Ontario.

He and Pat made St Lazare QC their home for the past 29 years to be near nature and horses. In their spare time Drew and Pat shared a love of animals including horses, cats and dogs, though it was always cats that were part of their household. Topper and Eddie were the horses they boarded nearby and rode through the local forest trails and that occupied a lot of their leisure time. Drew had a variety of interests including cars (F1 racing, car shows and his beloved Porsche Cayman), American and British politics, and reading about history and intricate thriller novels.

Anyone who knew Drew knew just how much he loved to read books. I cannot remember him not having a library membership and visiting the library on a regular basis to stock up on new books to read. As I was sorting through some of his things I came across this book and thought I should share it. This was a book he borrowed from the library and read. After having returned it to the library he had me search out a copy for him to own so that he could read it as many times as he liked. I think he read every Harry Turtledove novel he could - he loved to read things like alternate history stories. What if the South HAD won the Civil War?

I have very fond memories of stopping enroute between Ottawa and Montreal and meeting Pat & Drew for breakfast. Drew was always gracious, and well informed and interested in the children's lives. He listened and never talked down to them.

Sometimes there are places in our lives which are so special they stay in our memories forever. Drew would often talk about the cottage where the family would spend their summer vacations and one time took me up there to show it to me. I heard stories of the games played in the woods and how Freddie would join in . . . .

One of Drew's strongest desires was to be in control, this only becoming stronger as he aged and retired from work. While most of us learn that some things are beyond our control, he never accepted that. He had an inner drive to be better, stronger, more informed than the rest of us that surpassed anyone else I know. He was very intelligent and used the tools available to him - books, television, internet - to continually educate himself. What I admired is that he always wanted to use all of this knowledge to improve the lives of those around him. Whether it was how to improve your financial situation or how to prepare a specific meal, he was always learning and always willing to help those of us around him.

From the times I met Drew, I found him to be very smart, kind and he loved Pat with all his heart.
His love for animals was very apparent and he loved our dog Nero, and was kind to invite us to see their stables and horses.
Nero loved them so much. Dogs know the good ones!
You will be missed, Drew, I regret that I only knew you for a short period of time.

Drew loved good food. It's interesting that when I think of places we went, many of those memories involve food. I remember Abacus near his apartment in DDO, an upscale Chinese restaurant he took me to. The waiter cautioned him not to eat certain peppers in his meal. Of course that meant he had to try one - and them immediately drain both our water glasses and those on a nearby table! He took me to Le Petit Poucet in Val David which he remembered from his summers at the cottage. I remember oysters in Boston, rock Cornish game hens in Stowe, cream of mushroom soup at Mr Moustache in Burlington, and the best breakfast I've had at a small Cuban restaurant in the Florida Keys where few spoke English. . . And of course, who could forget the year Cindy was hosting an extended family Christmas luncheon and Drew had been given a coupon for a Christmas turkey? I wasn't there when he delivered the bird to Cindy but I would have loved to see her face as he carried in the biggest turkey I've ever seen!

Drew loved his cars and was always very vigilant to make sure that they stayed pristine. Drew and I both worked in the West Island in the 80's and I would often go shopping at Fairview on my lunch hour. I would always know if Drew was there because his car would be
parked at the very edge of the lot where there was no chance that someone would park next to him.

One of my fondest memories of Drew was when he heard that we were having a rough time financially he called me up and offered to help even though it had been a long time since I had talked with him. It meant so much to me. It was a truly generous thing for anyone to do but for anyone who knew my brother and knew how conservative he was with his money it made his offer even more special.

Going to see Uncle Drew was always so special to me. He was the only person in my family to share the same deep love for horses. Every time I saw him, no matter how much time had passed, he stayed the same. Same epic moustache, same contagious laugh, same pride for his horses. Throughout life many things change but Uncle Drew always stayed the same and though it may sound strange that was always so comforting to me. I love and miss him dearly.

Dearest Pat,
I am thinking of you during this time of sorrow. I wish you much comfort during this sad time. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Drew was one of a kind :) I knew I could count on him to make sure my horse was safe when I was out of town and not only did he look out for my horse but he’d do his drive by’s on his way to IGA to see if all was ok or take Nike for a walk. Oh let’s not forget the good financial advice and political debates.
I’m sure he’s galloping on his beloved Topper and most likely jumping over pearly gates like a steeplechase.
Again Pat my heartfelt sympathies xxx
May he rest in peace.

The pandemic lockdowns changed all our lives. When we were unable to do many of the usual daily activities (shopping, restaurants, etc) our minds often wandered to the past. I remember one day when we were bored being locked in the house we took a drive to the West Island. Drew drove me around the area of Pointe Claire which he grew up in pointing out various places of interest - home, school, etc. including a farmhouse which his sister Dacia had been involved in restoring back in 1967. Memories were very important to him!
