In Loving Memory of Dr. Catherine Ann JosephFebruary 15, 1943 – September 6, 2026. Dr. Catherine Ann Joseph devoted more than forty-five years of her life to higher education as an administrator, counselor, advisor, mentor, and advocate. Her professional journey reflected a profound belief in the transformative power of education and a lifelong commitment to expanding opportunity, nurturing student potential, and strengthening communities. In every chapter of her life, she led with wisdom, patience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to justice and humanity.
EARLY LIFE & ACADEMIC FOUNDATIONS:
Born on February 15, 1943, Catherine was raised with a deep respect for family, faith, and learning. She began her academic journey in Louisiana, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Southern University A&M in Baton Rouge. Her career in education began at her alma mater, where she served as a Testing Assistant and Freshman Orientation Advisor in the Department of Psychology. She later accepted a career counseling position at Loyola University in New Orleans, providing individual and group guidance while connecting students with local business opportunities—establishing early on her signature ability to build pathways for others. Driven by a desire to expand her impact, Catherine pursued advanced graduate studies across the country:
> University of Vermont (Burlington): Earned her Master of Education in Student Personnel Services, Counseling, and Guidance while serving as Coordinator of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program.
> University of Colorado Boulder: Earned her Doctorate in Higher Education Administration. While completing her degree, she served as a counselor in the Student Life Center.
> Statewide Educational Policy: Following her doctoral studies, Dr. Joseph served as Research Assistant, Staff Associate, and Academic Affairs Officer with the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, shaping statewide policy on transfer programs, remedial education, and minority student enrollment.
TWO DECADES OF LEADERSHIP AT UC SAN DIEGO:
In 1986, after thirteen years in Boulder, Catherine and her family made San Diego, California, their permanent home. Shortly thereafter, she joined the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), beginning a distinguished tenure of more than twenty years as the Dean of Academic Advising at Warren College.
At UCSD, Dean Joseph led professional advisors and support staff in providing comprehensive academic guidance to thousands of undergraduate students. She worked closely with the Academic Senate, Admissions, Financial Aid, and Student Affairs, and was instrumental in developing and launching the campus-wide Academic Advisors Training Certificate Program.
Dr. Joseph’s commitment to equity and community at UCSD extended far beyond administrative duties:
> The UJIMA Network: She co-founded and served as president of the UJIMA Network—an alliance of UC San Diego staff, faculty, students, alumni, and community members. She helped establish a research and performance scholarship program for undergraduates that became a university legacy lasting more than two decades.
> National Leadership: Nationally recognized as a leader in higher education advising, she served as the Pacific Region 9 Representative for the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), chaired the 1998 NACADA National Conference in San Diego, and became the organization’s first Administrative Divisional Representative.
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP & CONTINUED ADVOCACY:
Even after her retirement from UC San Diego in 2009, Catherine remained a vital voice for educational access. She worked alongside community organizations, the University of California system, and civic leaders to strengthen college readiness for underrepresented youth. In 2021, she co-authored a grant proposal funded by the San Diego Foundation to establish a summer enrichment program for college-bound students and their families.
CATHERINE'S DEDICATION TO COMMUNITY EXTENDED DEEPLY INTO CIVIC AND FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS:
> Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.: An active and dedicated member of the North San Diego County Alumnae Chapter, embodying the sorority’s values of sisterhood, scholarship, and public service.
> Jack and Jill of America, Inc.: A visionary leader who served as a charter member and the first president of the North County San Diego Chapter of Jack and Jill, helping lay the foundation for youth leadership and cultural enrichment throughout the region.
LIFE, JOY & FAMILY:
Beyond her formidable professional achievements, Catherine lived a vibrant and joyful life. She enjoyed stock investing, interior decorating, gathering with good friends, and celebrating regional traditions—from her love of Louisiana heritage to community gatherings.
Her greatest joy and absolute devotion, however, was her family. She shared a lifetime of partnership, love, and mutual support with her beloved husband, Henry. She was a fiercely loving mother to her children—Robin, Kimberly, and Reggie—and an adoring grandmother to her grandsons, Ethan, Quentin, and Zane.
Catherine’s legacy lives on in the thousands of students she guided, the colleagues she mentored, the community institutions she built, and the family who loved her beyond measure.

I am also grateful for her contributions to UC San Diego. She supported many students and initiatives, including the creation of our Divine 9 Plaza. I had the privilege of working with Catherine at Warren College as she not only hired me as her Assistant Dean but also supported me as her successor when she retired. I admired her passion and commitment to the work as well as her ability to provide genuine care and support to those of us on her team, as well as our families. There were no small moments with Catherine, she was unafraid to take on big projects at work and she loved to celebrate milestones and make others feel special. Her legacy lives on here at Warren College as we continue many practices that she put into place. While she was committed to her work, it was very clear that, above all, she loved her family. There was no mistaking how proud she was of Henry, her children, and grandchildren! My heart goes out to you all!
