Remembering Doug

Doug passed away on January 30, 2025, after facing esophageal cancer with the same resolve, focus, determination, courage, and heart that he brought to all he did in life.

A beloved teacher, soccer player and coach, friend, brother, son, and more, Doug took genuine interest in everyone he met, extending love and care through thoughtful conversation and generous acts of kindness. He could strike up an engaging chat with anyone, in the most genuine way, because he had endless curiosity about people and about life. He especially relished helping people identify and articulate their own aspirations and reach for their potential, and saw possibility in everyone. His playful humor and cheer were things he chose to share in creative ways through his many roles in life and gave him a unique presence of being. Doug just made you feel good, and he also chose to face his treatment through the same love with which he lived his life, making others feel better and appreciated.

We thank you for being part of Doug's life and we invite you to add your memories and stories of Doug to the Memory Wall, and upload pictures and videos you'd like to share to our Gallery. I had the privilege of serving as a teacher with Doug at Ruxton Country School, Baltimore for 8 years. We were part of a large class of incoming freshman teachers starting at the middle school there in 2000. Doug blessed me with the gift of helping me become a successful full-time professional teacher: Doug lived his life with the Aborigine attitude that espouses you don't deserve a birthday party unless you have become a better person in the past year. He inspired everyone, parents, co-teachers like me, and of course the students to be constantly bettering ourselves. His always positive, loving spirit kept me going in a brutally difficult profession and he transformed me into a pretty decent soccer player (from a mediocre former high-school-only player) and coach in my mid forties, another gift from Doug I will never forget. Without Doug I probably wouldn't have had to courage to ask my (now wife) girlfriend to marry me. I don't know why God wanted you so soon Doug, but I really hope to see you again on the other side.

It was an honor to work alongside a truly exceptional coach for two unforgettable years. A man of great wisdom and vision, he had the rare gift of inspiring players, elevating individuals, and molding a team into one. Through his actions, he showed us—the coaching team—what real teamwork looks like and how to build a united squad.

Even after he left to pursue his dreams in Florida, I often find myself thinking of this gentleman. His spirit, leadership, and the values he passed on remain close to my heart.

Thank you, Coach O. You are deeply missed.

Intensity.

Such a simple word reminds me of an extraordinary individual. If I close my eyes, I can hear him shouting that word to my daughter and her soccer team, encouraging them sternly on the pitch but with care. We are so saddened to hear of the recent passing of Camille's beloved former soccer coach, Doug Oppenheimer. He was so insightful, passionate, full of authenticity and integrity. He truly cared for his team as if he had 16+ bonus daughters.
We will continue to live life with 'intensity,' the way he would have wanted us to.

Doug was my soccer teammate and Sophomore roommate at Colby. He was a larger than life character. He never walked - he strutted: chin up, eyes forward, arms swinging. On the soccer field (and off too) he was a dervish, everywhere all at once and always in the right place (never more so than at the back post in the waning seconds against Bowdoin in 1990). He did not just have swagger, he owned it like he had invented the concept. It oozed from him and it was positively infectious. People gravitated to Doug because while it was sometimes unclear what might happen next it was guaranteed to be fun and filled with positive energy. I cannot imagine my own college years without Doug. He was one of a kind.

Dougie was like a big brother to me in the late 80s… by that I mean a late 80s kind of brother. Taught me to moonwalk, enormous amounts of misinformation about girls, terrified me, thrilled me. He was always a big life kind of guy. He loved his real brother (my bestie -Oppie), and no one created better characters in Wizardry. I went all over New England to watch him play soccer with his proud Dad. So many vivid and great memories of really wonderful guy.

Seriously one of the most genuine, nicest guys in our class of 1988 at BHS. Only remember smiles, positive energy, and making others feel good. And an incredible soccer player. Sounds like he went on to continue being an amazing human being to everyone thereafter. My condolences to his family. I’m sure y’all will continue his good vibes in the world.

I had the pleasure of meeting Doug at MD Anderson in July 2024 and was able to stay in touch with him before The Lord called him home. We only had a few minutes before he had to go, but it was obvious that he was a kind and warm person. I’m glad we were able to stay in touch.

To Doug’s family, my deepest condolences. When we met, he was encouraging a young lady that was also battling cancer. What a great man.

You are all in our prayers. May Gods peace and presence comfort and sustain you.

Thank you Lord for allowing me to meet such a good man.
