Obituary
Dorothy Jean Bryan Wendt of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at the Huntsville Hospital Hospice Facility after a brief battle with cancer.
Dorothy was born December 27, 1937 in Covington County to D J and Lorene Bryan, both deceased. She was raised in the Rose Hill Community. Mrs. Wendt received her BS in Education from Troy State College and her Master’s Degree from Florida State University. Dorothy devoted much of her life to the teaching of mathematics, having very successfully coached Grissom High School’s math team for several years. She was also an avid bridge player and a member of Latham Church in Huntsville.
Dorothy (known as “Dot” to some and “Dorothy Jean” to close family) is survived by her husband, Richard Wendt of Huntsville, Alabama, and two children, Katrina Wendt of Alta Loma, California and Rich Wendt (Belinda) of Franklin, Tennessee. Her surviving grandchildren are Patrick Early of Alta Loma, California, Dylan Wendt of Franklin, Tennessee and Jessica Wendt of Franklin, Tennessee. Mrs. Wendt is survived by five siblings all in Alabama: Ferrell Bryan (Susan) of Athens, Myra Wheelock of Dozier, John Bryan (Rosemary) of Andalusia, Donald Bryan (Janet) of Andalusia and Margaret Lucas (Billy) of Dothan. She has several surviving nieces, nephews and bridge friends who loved her.
This tribute page was created by students of Mrs. Wendt from Grissom High School. Mrs. Wendt profoundly touched many lives as a math teacher from the 1970s through 1990s. She helped build an enduring high school math team tradition in Alabama that inspired talented students and brought them together in a tight-knit community.
She was the favorite teacher of so many of us through the years, and instilled a lifelong love for math that encouraged numerous students on to careers in math, engineering, and the sciences. She was sharp and highly effective as a teacher, but perhaps more importantly, she created an environment where math kids could hang out and form lifelong connections. She will also be remembered for her sly and sometimes mischievous sense of humor – even when her students were a lot to put up with, she also knew when to give us space to learn more than just math.
Many of us owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mrs. Wendt, and to her family for sharing her with us. Please accept our condolences.
