Doreen's Story

Doreen Salk, a beacon of loving-kindness and selflessness, passed away on September 5, 2025, at her home in Naperville, Illinois. Born in Providence, Rhode Island to Donald and Doris Campbell, Doreen's life was woven with dedication to her family and a heart that overflowed with generosity.

A proud graduate of Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island, Doreen excelled in the study of Accounting, graduating summa cum laude, which paved the way for her career in finance and real estate. Despite her professional commitments, she was a profoundly dedicated and involved mother and wife, always making time to nurture and support her children's dreams and aspirations.

Family was the cornerstone of Doreen's world. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and loving husband of many years, Howard Salk, her devoted children, Nikki Nye and Ethan Salk, and her cherished grandchildren, Eleonore and Adeena, who brightened her days with their laughter and curiosity. Doreen's role as a mother and grandmother was one she embraced with all her heart, creating memories that her children and grandchildren will carry with them always.

Doreen's interests and hobbies were as diverse as they were heartfelt. In her younger years, she found joy in the freedom of sailing the open waters, the grace of riding horses, and the adventure of traveling the globe. These activities reflected her love for animals and the natural world. Later in life, Doreen discovered a passion for knitting and crafting, creating beautiful pieces that are cherished tokens of her love. She also found comfort and entertainment in watching old westerns, a pastime that she shared with her father.

Above all, Doreen will be remembered for the warmth of her presence and the depth of her caring nature. She was a woman who never hesitated to put the needs of others before her own, and her legacy is one of boundless love and kindness. Those who knew her will recall her gentle spirit, her compassionate heart, and the unwavering support she provided to everyone around her.

As we bid farewell to Doreen, we celebrate a life lived with love and caring, one that has had a lasting imprint on the hearts of those she touched. Her memory will be treasured and kept alive through the countless lives she enriched with her love. Her light, though no longer with us in body, will forever illuminate the paths of her beloved family and friends.

Doreen Salk's journey was one of kindness, generosity, and love—so her family asks that those looking to pay tribute to Doreen do so through donations to a charity of their choice, especially those helping to preserve our natural world.

HOWARD’S ODE TO DOREEN

I oft expressed my love in rhyme,
And now I’ll do it another time.

Doreen can’t escape my corny verses,
‘Cause that’s just how my love traverses.

Thank you all for coming today,
From both close and far away.

Your presence is an overwhelming expression of love,
For our dear Doreen looking down from above.

This celebration of life is just how she would want it to be,
People conversing with merriment and glee.

Being in the park,
Is not just a lark.

At the Temple to Music down on one knee,
I said to Doreen: Will you marry me?

Wed in the nearby park garden we didn’t go far,
We moved in across the street ‘til I passed the Bar.

Doreen graduated summa cum laude,
Excelled in accounting and never got rowdy.

Except in tennis where she slaughtered me weekly,
Off I trudged humble and meekly.

Another slot every week was for sailing,
Where Doreen quickly got wind of my failing.

She loved riding horses,
Not succumbing to tosses.

She enjoyed planning parties and trips,
Ironing out all last-minute blips.

Whenever she was sitting,
She was sure to be knitting.

We were all touched by Doreen’s warmth and caring,
A beautiful soul that keeps on sharing.

The biggest and most important part of her life,
Was nurturing a family devoid of all strife.

She mastered that well,
As you can all tell.

She created Ethan and Nikki,
In what is her finest legacy.

A life overflowing with kindness has given us memories to treasure,
That we’ll frequently look upon with the greatest of pleasure.

Doreen’s aura we shall not forsake,
It will be permanent on the nearby lake.

By the Temple to Music will be the Doreen Salk Boardwalk and Dock,
Where Doreen’s spirit will forever make happiness unlock.
