Message from the Family
Our beloved Dominicus James Young, entered eternal rest on February 17, 2026. As many of you know, Dominicus was a bright light to all who had the privilege of knowing him. “DJ” was a loving son, step-son, step-brother, half-brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He was a talented soccer player, future engineer and cherished member of the Class of 2026 - who showed such promise!
Thank you again for all the love you have shown our family during this difficult time. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we navigate this new reality that is life without DJ’s physical presence. #Infinite8

You were my greatest creation and my deepest joy. In our short time together, you taught me more about resilience, pure love, and being present.
I will always remember the way you and I would have our dance tags, bike rides, trips to the park, play our Jenga games and So many more Mother and Son Quality Time. You were a light that didn't just brighten a room;m, you gave it purpose.
While my heart is heavy with the short amount of time we had between your arrival and your departure. I will choose everyday to celebrate the quality of your life. You were loved fiercely, Protected in my heart every second, and you will be Honored through every step I take from this day Forward.
My promise to you is simple, Your name will always stand for Love, and your Legacy will be one of Truth. Rest now, my Sweet (Forever) Young Man. Your mother has it from here.
WITH ALL MY LOVE, Your Mother~Mar'nene Butler

One of the things that always meant a lot to me was how much he admired the things I could fix around the house. I like to think that seeing that may have played a small part in sparking his interest in becoming an engineer someday. That curiosity was also fostered by Mar’nene and the science projects she helped DJ complete. DJ was always curious about how things worked and eager to learn. As a Manager of Engineering, I was even looking forward to the possibility that one day DJ might come work with me if he chose to follow that path.
Some of my favorite memories are the small moments that showed just how perceptive and thoughtful he was. He understood my dry sense of humor better than most people. More than once he would turn to his mom and explain, “He’s joking,” making sure she knew I wasn’t serious. I still chuckle about that every now and then when I think about it. That was DJ — paying attention, connecting the dots, and enjoying the moment.
I’ll always remember our long bike ride through River Legacy Park, the times we practiced dance moves together, and the night we watched Gremlins. DJ stood behind the couch for the entire movie — watching but keeping a safe distance just in case. It still makes me smile thinking about it.
Every outing, every trip, every simple moment was filled with his high energy and high spirits. DJ had a way of bringing life to everything he did.
One of the most beautiful things about DJ was the relationship he had with his mom. The love between them was something special — the kind of bond you don’t see often. They cared deeply for each other, and it was clear to anyone who spent time with them.
DJ also loved both of his parents very much, which was an admirable trait to see in a young man. I could see the love they had for him as I watched them cheer him on at his basketball, soccer, and flag football games that Mar’nene organized. We all attended those games together when DJ was young and still figuring out which sport he liked best.
When only a few tell a story, the picture can be dim. But when many tell a story, the light begins to shine through. Looking through the many pictures and memories people have shared, it’s clear that DJ had an entire village around him. He had people to laugh with, learn from, and grow with. He was loved by many, and he loved deeply in return.
Thank you to everyone who shared those moments, who loved this young man, and who helped add to his joy. To all the family and friends who grieve, blessings to you.
In just 17 short years, DJ truly lived. He embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. In many ways, he showed all of us what it means to seize the day and take every opportunity life offers.
To my wife, Marnene — we have walked through deep fear and uncertainty before when my own son almost lost his life just a few years ago. Now we face the heartbreaking loss of your only son, Dominicus.
Please know that I love you, I grieve with you, and I will stand beside you through this difficult time and every day that follows.
At last, I leave you with this verse. For all who believe in Jesus, we know that death is not the end.
1 Corinthians 15:55–57
“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
With love,
Bonus Dad and husband to Mar'nene

I don't have the words to express my feelings. I remember DJ and the Smiths Kristi and Johnathan baby. That day you all brought your babies to experience going into the pool for a dip. So cute. Dj was quiet, polite, and always smiling. He was always eager to do church projects like Care Bags for the homeless. He was a pleasant young man. I am going to miss him. Marnene my heart bleeds for you and your family, I am praying for you all.

I too have one son and my heart broke for you Sissy when I heard that DJ was gone. Only God can help you with this pain and healing process! I immediately began praying for you daily for God to help you through this tough and trying time, and He will do just that. Just trust Him. I know my brother David is also grieving the loss of his "bonus" son. Help each other through this time and pray like never before! I love you both and Mama and I will be there to say goodbye to an amazing kid and give our support in deed, not just Word.
In God we love and trust!
Your Sissy,
Sherrita
