Obituary

HANKINSON, Delray Neil (Del) passed away under care at the University of Alberta hospital at the age of 71 years. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen (Ryan); son Duncan; two grandchildren Finnegan, Lucy; three brothers Brian (Joanne), Jeff (Barbara), Ken (Rosanne); one sister Laurie; in addition to many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Barbara Ann, and oldest brother Terrance. Del was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Arts in 1973. Del became a chartered accountant then acted as President, CEO, and owner of several industrial companies throughout his career. A community-minded individual, he was involved in a variety of political campaigns. Del supported various minor football teams through many years of voluntary service. He was also a horse enthusiast who enjoyed cattle-penning and trail riding. Although his later years were marked by difficulties, Del remained a generous, social soul who had a love for regaling others with a good joke. The family wishes to thank his many friends who came to visit and spend time with him while in hospital. As per Del’s last wishes, he was cremated so his ashes could be scattered in “a beautiful place.” On the anniversary of his passing, Del’s children took him for one last ride on his old Western saddle to Dyson Creek Falls in Kananaskis, his final resting place.

I finally got to share the photos with Rick and he shared some memories with me of time with Del. Your photos of Del’s last ride are lovely and a touching tribute to your Dad.

Growing up next door I got to know Del and his love for action movies! I always was so amused with his ability to immerse himself in the movie to the point of watching his body shift and move around ver so slightly as if it would help the hero of the story fight better! I also enjoyed learning to ride and going skiing with the family while growing up! Not to mention his Santa costume and sleigh! Lots of fond memories of time spent over at the Hankinson house!

Del was the big brother who loved a good laugh and got me hooked on horses. He taught me to ride my first horse and riding is a passion I have to this day thanks to him. Some of my best childhood memories are with Del and he will always be loved and missed.
