Remembering

Here on this page, we gather and remember David Vetrovec, our friend, game master, co-worker, roommate, and so much more than simple words can say. Here we tell our stories, post our pictures, and ensure that while Dave may be gone, he is certainly not forgotten.

Dave had many interests. He was a great Japanophile, enjoying anime, history and culture. He enjoyed science fiction and fantasy, books and film. He liked most sports (save for basketball) and played several video games.

One thing Dave was well known for was his participation in role playing games. He played and led several games simultaneously. His attention to detail and love of storytelling added to every game he played and gave the worlds he built a depth that was hard to duplicate.

Dave was a friend that everyone could appreciate. He was supportive of his friends in their passions and projects, always asking about the latest updates.

My 2nd year of college at Kutztown in PA, my roommate and his friends went to a floor social (I was and still am anti-social). Dave had followed them back from the event, oblivious to the fact that they didn't invite him back and found him odd. We chatted awkwardly for a while, before he saw a poster I had up (maybe Franzetta's Deathdealer?) He brought up that he was joining a D&D group downtown, and invited me to join him in finding out it they were any good. It was a mixed bagged, but we did game with them most of college. I don't know them anymore, but for reasons I'll never know we gelled. True friendship and compatibility is more random and rare I think in this universe. Luckily, I found someone who could be that for the next 4 decades.
He may have died young, but he lived more in that time than anyone I know.

Years ago, when we were all working on Anime Detour, my wife had a realization that we should make a fund to try and help people in the community, as we were already trying to do so out of general funds. I drafted some initial rules and went to Dave to run it by him. He told me in no uncertain terms he thought it was a bad idea, that it opened us to potential litigation, and that he felt it was outside our mission statement. He then finished with, "What can I do to help?" Because that was Dave. He'd tell you jumping off the cliff was a terrible idea, but if you were committed he was going to be right there alongside you - but he'd also try to buy you parachutes first.

One of my favorite experiences with David was playing a computer game called War in the Pacific. It is a large, in depth strategic game of the Pacific theater of World War 2, one day at a time. The type of game that only people like he and I would love. We played through the game; it took us years, from plotting out campaigns executing operations. It was an intense time that we both enjoyed thoroughly. So much, in fact, that when we were done, we bought the next edition, and did it a second time. We had been discussing and trying alternatives to War in the Pacific for a third major game, but had not found anything suitable. In fact, we were discussing a third play through, which could have been a lot of fun. I will miss those games of ours a lot.
