Obituary

David "Dave" Halpin of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a beloved father, son, brother, and friend, passed away on May 7, 2024, at the age of 50, after a courageous 18-month battle with Esophageal Cancer. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, on October 28, 1973, Dave's journey through life was filled with a spirit for adventure and an unwavering passion for sports and music.

A graduate of the College of Wooster in Ohio, Dave's life took an unexpected turn when a pit stop in Albuquerque during one of his many long road trips to visit friends became his home for more than two decades. For the last 12 years, he has worked at Bread Financial, most recently as a Workforce Analyst.

Dave's love for sports was unparalleled. A die-hard fan of the New York Football Giants and a long-suffering New York Mets fanatic, his amazing memory for sports statistics and facts never ceased to amaze those around him. His infectious enthusiasm and unrestrained emotions during games added an extra layer of excitement to any event you were lucky enough to attend or watch with him.

In addition to his passion for sports, Dave had an immense love for music, especially the band Widespread Panic. Having attended more than 150 of their shows, he could always be found at a Panic show dancing with abandon, fully immersed in the music that touched his soul.

More than anything, Dave was proud of his 12-year-old son, Cody. Becoming a dad calmed his wandering spirit, grounding him in a life he loved. Cody, an avid skier, and a talented chess player, shares his dad's sharp and analytical mind. Dave loved watching him grow up and, in his illness, was comforted by the thought of the adventures Cody would go on to have throughout his life.

Dave is survived by his son, Cody Desgroseilliers of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico; his parents, Tom and Connie Halpin of Pasadena, California; his sister, Amy Halpin, and her husband, Brian Macken, of Los Angeles, California, and their children, Alice and Patrick. He also leaves behind an Aunt, cousins, and many cherished friends and chosen family members, most notably Michele Desgroseilliers, the mother of his son, who held a special place in his heart and life, and his long-time roommate and ride-or-die best friend, Felicia Davis, who provided unwavering support and love to Dave throughout their long friendship, and especially during his battle with cancer.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held at a later date. There will be lots of music and dancing. In his memory, donations to Cody's education fund can be made at https://bit.ly/College4Cody

In the words of his beloved Widespread Panic:

May your family share laughter
Your songs always play
May your wishes come true
Even those left unprayed
Hand on my shoulder
Gentle cloud on the hill
May your heart's doors be open
Forever and ever, may your glass it be filled
