Obituary

Darren Lamont Mason – also known as D-Mase, Preacher, Babe, Cuz, Pledge Club Jesus, and many other names – was born on October 20, 1963, in Chicago, IL, to Albert Mason Jr. and Barbara Jean (Pass) Mason. He grew up in the Woodlawn neighborhood, a place that he often referred to as just 66th Street. Darren’s mother passed away when he was 3 years old, and his many aunts, uncles, and cousins surrounded him and his sister Janet with loving support. Aunts Joanne and Alice held a special place in his heart. In the summers, Darren and Janet went south to Tennessee where big cousin Terry and many other family members nurtured them.

The 66th Street neighborhood was rough and tumble, and also filled with love. Darren attended Holy Cross grammar school, where he played tackle football on the concrete playground, and wooed all the girls. When they weren’t on 66th Street, Darren and Janet were at their dad’s dry cleaners on 87th street, sleeping on a palette amongst the clothes over the weekend while their father worked late.

Darren loved to tell stories about the things he shouldn’t have gotten into, like jumping off the roof of their apartment building, and joining in neighborhood scuffles. His extended family was always there to protect him, and he always had their backs too. “D-d-d-don’t forget to beat ’im up!” was one of his famous instructions, delivered with his trademark childhood stutter.

Darren went on to Hales Franciscan High School, where he distinguished himself as a diligent student and a scrappy basketball player. Known for his intensity on defense, he once guarded future NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas. Darren successfully walked the line between being smart and cool, good and sneaky. From an early age, Darren was committed to making (and saving) money. He worked throughout high school; his favorite job was being a unionized cashier at Vito’s grocery store. He graduated from Hales in 1981.

Bradley University was Darren’s next stop. Initially planning to major in Engineering, Darren eventually found his niche in Computer Science—an exceptionally marketable field in the early 1980s. While Darren was a conscientious student and budding professional, his college years were defined by his bond with “Da Bruhs” of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Darren pledged the Xi Epsilon Chapter in Fall 1982 and served as president and anchor of his line: the Thunderous Dog Pack 11 Strong. Bradley’s chapter is known as Hard Stompin’ Xi E, and Darren was one of the hardest of them all. Known for his lifelong commitment to fitness, hopping was another way to show just how high he could get his knees, how tight he could get his spins, how loud he could bark, how good his cardio was, and how many pieces of clothes he could take off in the process. Darren was always loyal to the frat, even if he was also independent and contrarian. He gave generously to bruhs in need, and to the Omega Psi Phi scholarship fund at Bradley.

Darren’s career was as dynamic as he was. A computer programmer, consultant, personal trainer, Beachbody rep, commodities trader, marketing rep, and salesman of many things—Darren did it all. His curiosity and willingness to take risks made him a serial entrepreneur—founding ventures like Future Tense, Physical Finesse, and Patient Capital Group. He was also a consummate investor, always ready with tips and new ideas—Bitcoin, anyone?

Darren was both a rooted Chicagoan and a free-spirited nomad. His commitment to becoming fluent in Spanish took him to Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Panama, and Chile, where he charmed new friends with his determination to speak Spanish no matter what actually came out of his mouth. In Cartagena, he was like the unofficial mayor, known and loved by so many.

Darren was generous beyond measure with advice and treasure. He showed love for young people by supporting everything college related. He encouraged and invested in friends and family with promising business ideas. And he cheered on everyone in their efforts to get right again after life’s challenges. He made people believe they could do things they never thought they could do.

Darren was lucky to experience profound love twice in his life. He married Cristel Turner in 1994, and though the marriage ended, their beautiful friendship remained strong. Darren cherished his bond with Cristel's mom (Mrs. Turner), her daughter Blaire, her sister Jennifer, and the extended Turner family. In January 2004, Darren met Mary Pattillo, and they built a life together filled with shared passions for health, fitness, travel, afternoon walks and talks, and each other. Through Mary, Darren gained another loving family of sisters and brothers, a niece and nephews, Ms. P., and especially his Miami roomie Sheri.

Darren’s outgoing nature meant he never met a stranger. He couldn’t step into an elevator without striking up a conversation or end an Uber ride without knowing the driver’s life story. He frequently asked his doctors how they were doing at the end of his appointments. He also had a way with words, often dropping gems like “They talked about Jesus Christ” to brush off gossip, “What people don’t understand” to explain his point of view, or “Focus on Why” to help others block out distractions. There was, of course, his self-hyping moniker—The Clo$er. Towards the end, his mantra and message was simple: “Keep it Light.”

Darren made his transition on March 5, 2025, after a battle with an aggressive cancer—a fight he kept private from everyone but his partner, Mary, because he didn’t want anyone to worry and he wanted to focus on life. Darren was the product of his family, schooling, neighborhood, relationships, and countless jobs—but above all, he was his own man, with the six-pack abs of a 20-year-old, an independent mind, and a spirit that was relentlessly positive, incredibly outgoing, and unapologetically loud and talkative. He faced his illness with the same strength and fearlessness that defined his life. Though his book closed much too soon, the chapters he wrote were filled with passion, generosity, and an unyielding zest for life—leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lessons for all who knew him.

Darren was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Jean Pass and stepmother Rosa Mason. He is survived by his life partner, Mary, his loving father, Albert Mason Jr., his sister Janet Mason, his aunt Alice Beard, his beloved big cousin Deborah Lewis, and countless nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi, and so many friends whose lives he deeply touched.

Travel well, Darren.

I was shocked and saddened from Darren's passing. I was fortunate to be included in his large circle of friends and colleagues he accumulated over his bright and shining time with us. I met Darren in the mid 90's while we were in the early stages of the fitness industry, living at this new intersection of business and hustle meets health and lifestyle. We share laughs and stories and I was always impressed with his resume and interest and expertise from computers to commodities trading to travel. We kept in touch and shared dinners discussing his love of crypto and life. His strength and smile is something I thought would never fad and outlive all of us. His presence and spirit is already missed.

Mary, we are sorry to hear about your loss. Please know we are here for you. Darren is always kind and cheerful every time we see each other. He’s so patient and has a way of getting my kids to talk nonstop about themselves. I vividly remember watching his intensive exercise sessions on the porch in awe and secretly telling myself that I could be a little more active too. I wish I had taken the time to learn about his amazing life stories when I had the chance.

To Darren's family, I am so sorry for your loss! Darren was a shinning light, his smile, laugh and positive energy was exhilarating! I trained with Darren and he motivated me in a way that inspired me to be the best I could be! When I asked Darren to sit on a board that I was chairing for severly chronically ill folks (Trilogy), he did not hesitate to be a very important member of the board. Darren's light will shine in my heart forever. With love, Robyn

I was lucky enough to have worked with "The Closer" himself! Darren was kind and funny and always encouraged me to excel personally and professionally. He took time out of his day to help me when I was new and shared his knowledge and best practices (that only he could pull off) Darren was a person of strong character and I admired that about him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family .... thanks for everything D

Darren was a one-of-kind. I worked on his team at TT and I am better person because of it. He pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me so much about the industry. As a manager, I knew he had my back. I remember lots quizzes about the markets and running boxing drills at the gym during lunch, lots smiles and positivity. He will be so missed.

Darren was a force of nature—sharp, determined, and full of life. I was honored to witness his strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit. Even in the most challenging moments, he carried himself with dignity and focus, never losing sight of what mattered most. He had a way of making every interaction meaningful, reminding us all to "keep it light" and live with purpose. My deepest condolences to Mary and all who loved him. His impact will not be forgotten.

Dear Darren, to know me in this moment is to know I am in shock, heart broken. When I bring you into my minds eye I see your beautiful smile, a smile that radiates pure joy, an abundance of love & aliveness as well as your trademark playful ‘mischief’.
You have always felt to me like the perfect balance of an ‘old soul’, a sage, a wisdom teacher with a magical youthful hunger for life, experience & learning. A beginners mind, curious, excited to learn, all with a deep knowing. I think you saw every interaction as a portal to greater connection to another & hence greater connection to yourself.
Your physical body a walking testimony to your discipline & dedication to you & how freely you’d share your wisdom, experience with others. You are truly a beautiful man inside & out. You are deeply missed brother & your lessons continue… life is short, unpredictable, live it to the full. You did!
My heart goes out especially to you Mary & Darren’s family in this moment of loss. Deep Gratitude. 🙏🏻 Tim.

I met Darren through my husband back in the 90s. We first bonded over gym banter, trading jokes back and forth, and later, we trained together for the Hancock Run. That one hot summer, Darren and I pushed ourselves on the track, always trying to improve our speed. I’ll never forget when he told me—with that mischievous smile of his—that he chose to run in a group where he could be first rather than in a group where he’d be in the middle. It was classic Darren—humble yet competitive, always with a sense of humor. That summer was one of the best.
Life took us in different directions, but a few years later, I reconnected with him and his partner when they stopped by my open house. It was like no time had passed. Just recently, Steven mentioned that he had been talking to Darren about getting together again. We always think we have more time, but sometimes life gets away from us, and we don’t get that chance.
Darren was a kind, funny, and genuine person who made an impact on everyone lucky enough to know him. I’ll always be grateful for those moments we shared, and I’ll carry his laughter and spirit with me. Rest easy, my friend.

Darren was a neighbor who was always available to help anyone in need, from helping to salt the stairs in the winter to many other things, big or small, that helped make our building feel like a family. His boundless energy and the way he forged his own path was and still is an inspiration. He will be missed.

The thought of never hearing Darren relentlessly tease me for something breaks my heart. He was a one of a kind brother... From the ETC workouts with Sena, and Mayhorn, to our most recent call, Darren was always full of life, laughs, and solid advice. "Hey Chris, let's grab a meal.." was a calling to make sure I had all my "Ts" crossed and "is" dotted. I'm really gonna miss you my brother.

As a fellow Alom of Bradley University, and an omega sci-sweetheart. I shared the yard with Darren and the other members of the amazing brotherhood of OMega in the 80s. 💜Since then, I’ve seen Darren on occasion reunion gatherings and he was such a joy. I pray his spirit is present with the Lord in Jesus name amen. 🙏

Darren mason is a man who I can say changed my life. He was a mentor for a period who taught stature, and confidence. I joined beachbody originally because of his confidence. Traveled 12 hours through a blizzard , to Madison, and many other events. He was my up line and someone who led with straight talk. We may have butted heads both being alphas, but my life is better because he had entered it.

For his family I grieve for you. He is someone I am forever grateful

D-Mase was my Brother from another mother. We recently had dinner and ministered to each other about family life challenges we each were confronting. D-Mase gave me powerful advice that was spot on and delivered straight, no chaser, as only he could. He shared with me as well. Powerful moments; we each dropped a tear or two, which Brothas typically don’t do with each other. Darren was a real one and I will miss him terribly. My deepest condolences to Sister Mary and the family. Rest in Power my Brotha’!!!

Daren Mason was more than just a colleague—he was a mentor, an inspiration, and a true friend. I feel blessed and honored to have known him and to have heard the wisdom he so generously shared. Those of us who worked with him admired his “get things done” attitude and his straightforward, no-nonsense approach to life. Just a couple of weeks ago, I told him I was having a daughter, and he immediately asked for the registry so he could send a gift. I’ll miss him greatly and will do my best to live by the example he set.

Bro Darren Mason…. Very good bruh. He was the 2nd Xi E bruh I met. Dre Sailors told him to look out for me in reciprocity for hospitality I showed him down south and he rolled out the purple carpet for me up north. ! It started at Buckingham fountain summer 89. He was the 1st Muay Thai practitioner I ever met. Can’t believe this as I just had impromptu lunch with him last summer and we talked of some training and riding this summer. I got the book you told me to get big bro… now I need to finish it. RIP brother. .

My relationship with Darren was through work and only had known him for about 1.5/2 years - however, he will truly live forever in my mind. He instantly became on of my favorite co-workers of all time and was the "Old Bull" teaching all the "Young Bulls" with hilarious stories every call I was on with him. Although I only knew Darren for a short time - I always called him your favorite sellers, favorite seller. Never have I seen a client apologies and feel like they had to get something done for a seller in my life until I met Darren. An absolute legend, one of the kindest and greatest people I've truly met. Was shocked to hear this news, but his family can know that the legend of Darren Mason will live forever.

Three years ago, I met my great uncle for the first time. For 20 years, I had carried his name without knowing the man behind it, and honestly, I was a little scared. But from the moment we started talking, I knew he was someone special. Uncle Darren became my inspiration the endless business calls, the stories about our family that I never knew, and the wisdom he shared so freely.

Having someone who believed in me, who I could look up to, meant everything. He was the closest I’ve ever felt to success and aspiration, and the drive he instilled in me is something I will never take for granted. I’ll carry his lessons, his belief in me, and his legacy forward. Rest easy, Uncle Darren. Thank you for everything.

I first met Darren as a colleague at Prime Trust, where his salesmanship left a lasting impression on me and played a key role in my decision to join the company. His ability to connect with people and articulate the value of financial infrastructure was truly remarkable.

Beyond that, Darren was an invaluable resource when it came to derivatives trading, particularly in the evolving world of crypto. His deep knowledge, willingness to share insights, and passion for the industry made him someone I greatly respected and appreciated.

He will be deeply missed, but his impact and the wisdom he shared will continue to resonate with all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Rest in peace, Darren.
