TRIBUTE TO A GREAT KING OF OUR TIME: ( THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB)

We probably all have our own personal examples of leaders that we admire. These certain individuals are role models for many of us during their and our lives. With some of them we have the feeling we grew up with; as long as we can remember these people were always “around” us. And with some of these role models we truly believe they are immortal. These legends will never die. For Me, the late Chief Samson Simon Obot was such an inspiration.
I will forever miss you because you were such an exemplary leader and a father who wanted peace and development for our great community Ikot Udoma village.

I am still trying to come to terms with the sad news of the demise. Late Chief S. S. Obot has been a guide and motivator to many of us. He was a visionary leader who gave shape to our community and anywhere he found himself.

Having served in your ruin as the youth secretary of our beloved community, I've learned from you with proof that leaders are born and leaders are not made. You were truly a God sent to our land that's why I call you the sacrificial lamb from God.

For us the living sons of our great land, I promise you that the community will continue with your already laid development strives by you.

Alas, we will not have an opportunity to interact again. May his soul rest in peace and his family and community at large get the strength to go through these tough times. I will miss a great mentor, leader, coach, and guide on my way forward. I will forever love you and continue to pray that the good Lord accepts your soul.

Dear Prince Obot,
CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON THE PASSING OF YOUR FATHER, CHIEF SAMPSON SAMPSON OBOT
The Board of Trustees, Management, staff and students of Alex Secondary Commercial School, Idua, Eket received with shock, the news of the passing of your royal father, late Chief Sampson Simon Obot who was the Village Head of Ikot Udoma and who was also a friend and benefactor of our school. Your father’s passing has left a painful vacuum in the leadership of our village which will be difficult to fill.
As Christians, we are conscious of the inevitability of death. Therefore, as you grieve over your father’s passing, we invite you to draw strength from the biblical assurance in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you” and in the reassuring words of the Prophet, Isaiah: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10).
Certainly, your illustrious father left lasting legacies which should also give you and your family cause to celebrate his life. Your father will for ever be remembered for the humility and simplicity he exemplified, the skills he taught the young ones, the employment opportunities he provided for the unemployed, the fame and development he brought to our community, the joys he gave to the needy, and the peace he strove to bring to the village. His life and time will for ever remain evergreen in our memory.
We pray that the Almighty will comfort you and your family in this hour of grief. And may the loving prayers of your father’s innumerable friends, admirers and family help his soul on its journey home.
Adieu By the Grace.

My Father, My Hero: A Tribute

My dear Dad, you were more than just a father to me; you were a mentor, a confidant, and a hero. Your pragmatic leadership, unwavering honesty, and selfless nature inspired me every day.

Your care for others knew no bounds, and your sacrifices for our family and community will never be forgotten. You led with integrity, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility, leaving an indelible mark on everyone you touched.

I cherish the memories of standing by your side during your toughest moments – from your appendix surgery in Akai to your courageous battle with heart failure at Immanuel Hospital in 2015, and later, your victorious fight against COVID-19 at Ibom Specialist Hospital in 2020. Even when I contracted COVID myself, I remained committed to your recovery, and by God's grace, you triumphed.

Your final battle last year was your toughest, and on June 19, 2024, you peacefully surrendered to death. I wish you were here to share in my upcoming milestones, especially as I prepare to begin a new chapter in my life. Your presence would have meant the world.

Your legacy of love, leadership, and selflessness will forever reside in my heart. I miss you profoundly, dear Dad.

Rest in peace.

With all my love,
Assamudo Obot

2.

My friend and I had become very close, especially as we were both members of the same Church, the Church of Christ, Ikot Udoma which we both contributed generously to develop. We trusted ourselves so much that I was content to stay in the background as a Director while he was in the forefront in running the business. We got married and had children and our wives also became friends. Unfortunately, Chief Obot lost his first wife at a very young age which was very sad because they were very close.
All through the hustle and bustle of business, our friendship remained unshaken and unbreakable, despite attempts by external forces to weaken the bond. Even when the transport business came to a sad end in the mid 1990’s we still remained friends till my friend left this mortal world. His simplicity, openness, integrity, compassion and gentleness endeared him to many who came across him. He was always ready to help people in need, especially the lowly and the under-privileged. Greed, acquisitiveness and power-mongering were not in his character.
I pray that the Almighty God who holds all authority over all of us, will comfort and strengthen the family of late Chief S.S. Obot in this difficult period. His wife and children will surely miss him but they will remember that my friend left behind a good name which is more than material wealth.
It is also my prayer that Chief S.S. Obot, my brother, my bosom friend, my business partner and confidant, find his path in the world beyond.
Adieu my friend and brother until we meet again!

Dear Prince Obot

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE ON THE PASSING OF YOUR FATHER, CHIEF SAMPSON SIMON OBOT

I was saddened to learn about the passing of your illustrious father, Chief Sampson Simon Obot who was the Village Head of Ikot Udoma, Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

I knew your father since the 1970’s as a prominent and well-respected businessman in the former Cross River State. He was one of the pioneers of long-distance bus service between Eket and Lagos. From the mid-1970’s to the early 1990’s, his transport service, By the Grace of God Motors, Eket which I used to patronize, was the most popular bus service from Eket and its environs to Lagos. I also knew your father as a committed community leader and philanthropist whose generosity and fairness have been praised by many.

In 2021 your father retained my services in the village headship matter at the Eket High Court. Over the past three and a half years that I worked with him our relationship deepened so much so that it appeared as if we had been friends for a much longer period. His geniality was infectious; his simple life style was astounding; and his integrity was beyond reproach. He was respectful, compassionate, generous, peace-loving and accessible to all and sundry. With his passing, Ikot Udoma community and indeed the whole of Eket Local Government Area has lost a worthy son and leader. Unfortunately, his traducers cared less about his sterling qualities and valuable potential for the progress and development of the community than their personal egos and leadership ambitions.

There is no doubt that your father left indelible marks in the sands of time and that his place in the history of your community is well assured. As for all the enmity and persecution that he faced, please take comfort in the words of Khalid Gilbran: “Persecution cannot harm him who stands by Truth. Did not Socrates fall a victim in body? Was not Paul stoned for the sake of the Truth? It is our inner selves which hurt us when we disobey it, and it kills us when we betray it.”

May the prayers and loving wishes of your father’s numerous friends (of which I am one), relations, associates, followers, etc. strengthen him on his journey home. And may the Almighty God who protected and prospered him throughout his earthly sojourn also comfort and protect you, your family and your community as you face life without Chief Obot's fatherly guidance.

Dear Prince Obot
TRIBUTE TO MY BOSOM FRIEND AND BUSINESS PARTNER,
LATE CHIEF SAMPSON SIMON OBOT

I received with shock and sadness, the news of the passing of Chief Sampson Simon Obot, my bosom friend and business partner of over fifty years. I was aware that he had been having health challenges for some time, but I had hoped that the doctors would be able to address his health problems so that he could continue his service to God and to humanity. Unfortunately, my friend is gone and I miss him very much.
As we were both from Idong Iniang community (Ikot Udoma, Ofriyo, Afia Nsit and Odoro Enen villages), I knew late Chief Sampson Simon Obot during our primary school years in Ofriyo Group School (now Primary School, Idong Iniang Eket). We became friends when he and I met in Port Harcourt after the Civil War. He had a job with the Red Cross Society in Port Harcourt while I was undergoing apprenticeship training with my cousin, late Mr Okukang.
In 1971, late Chief Obot resigned from his job in order to start his township taxi service. He had saved money to buy a second-hand Peugeot 403 car for the purpose. After two years, with the money he made from the taxi service he decided to buy a motor vehicle to be operated in Eket by his cousin and former boss while he continued his taxi service in Port Harcourt. Unfortunately, the venture with his cousin ended on a sad note as a result of the sudden death of cousin.
After his cousin’s death, Chief Obot sold his taxi cab in order to buy a mini bus. We worked together to achieve this objective, and this partnership cemented our friendship. Later we acquired other vehicles, including luxury buses and expanded the area of coverage of our bus services. We built a workshop in Ikot Udoma to service our vehicles and requested for assistance from Chief Augustine Ilodibe of Ekene Dili Chukwu Transport Company Ltd who gave us an experienced mechanic to help with the maintenance of the luxury buses. We established Samfra Petroleum, an independent filling station at Ikot Okudomo in Okon Eket which is still in existence today.

TRIBUTE TO MY UNQUANTIFIABLE BROTHER

It all happens like a dream. All of us were there at Ibom Specialist Hospital on that faithful night, when the curtain falls. An I can slept off. It was unbelievable. At first it appeared as if you were gasping. The nurses and all the Medical personnel battle “tooth and nail” to stabilize and bring you back, but to no avail. You gallantly took a bow and slept off to the “Journey of no Return”.
Yes, so it was you left us without a word. We were bewildered and thought that before the down of the night you will certainly come back. But this was a mirage. It was hoping against hope. Thus the scripture was fulfilled in you that …” No man has power to retain the spirit, or power over the day of death”. Eccl. 8:8. Yes, so it was, you responded to the Divine Appointment as stated in Heb. 9:27…” It is appointed for man to die once and after that comes judgement“.
Oh my brother you submitted to Divine will contrary to your wish and our anticipation.
Your unexpected demise was like folding up the umbrella while its use during rain and sun shine was still on high demand. Your likes is rare. In all your endeavours, you exhibited maximum alacrity. Especially in transport business, you made unprecedented Name “BY THE GRACE OF GOD MOTORS” which have become a household name, not only in your immediate community but in the Entire Eket L.G.A. and beyond. Indeed, you were an Epitome of great qualities in courage, patience, endurance and tolerance, love and peaceful co-existence. Integrity, unassuming and not willing to pay back evil for evil done to you. This is great Christian quality you exhibited during your life time.
My brother, you have left behind an indelible foot prints in the sands of times which will never be easily forgotten.
Your motto: “Live and lets live” translate into your great name SAMPSON – A seven lettered which signified who you are as each letter declares your sterling qualities.
S - Strength
A - Ability
M - Mentor
P - Potentiality
S - Service
O - Opportunity
N - Necessity
Yes, this truly depict who you are.
Sleep well my brother, till we meet again on the Resurrection Day. May your peaceful disposition and gentle soul find repose in your makers FAVOUR. Your good deeds will continue to speak for you always. ADIEU, REST IN PEACE MY BELOVE SENIOR BROTHER.

TRIBUTE TO A TRUTHFUL, TRUSTWORTHY UNCLE AND PHILANTHROPIST, LATE CHIEF SAMPSON SIMON OBOT NKAMIANG ASSAMUDO NNUADEM

My Chief, a truthful, humble, peace loving, accommodating, generous, trust worthy uncle and leader, you are dearly missed. No words can express my grief, but looking at the lives you touched, the legacies you have left behind, I strongly believe that your body had served its purpose, your soul had achieved what you came to do, learned what it came to learn and so, you left a fulfilled and contented leader.
A million words cannot bring you back neither can a million tears; I say this because I have cried. You have left your footprints with glory on the sand of time, your name will be remembered for a long time, and your story will be told for generations. All things soft, beautiful, and bright were seen in you.
When I lost my father in 2014, I thought there will be no one to always run to in time of challenges, but you filled the gap for me.
Those beautiful moments you shared with me will always remind me of the great man you were. I can never forget your support during my trying periods. Key among them was your unwavering support throughout my academic years in the university both morally and financially. You may no longer be here with us, but I will never forget you as a winner who lived life to the fullest.
My Chief, what is lovely cannot die, but passes into other loveliness. May your soul be granted a joyful ascent, Amen.

TRIBUTE TO A QUIET GENTLEMAN AND PHILANTHROPIST, LATE CHIEF SAMPSON SIMON OBOT

My acquaintance and association with the late Chief Sampson Simon Obot developed gradually, progressively over the past 55 years plus. It started during the Civil War years of the mid 1960’s when most people who had been living and working far away from their places of birth returned home to avoid being caught up in the war. My eldest brother and I who had been living in Eket town returned to the village just as late Chief S.S. Obot also returned to the village. Since he was much older than I was, I only knew him from a distance. I was familiar with his family – his father and mother were members of the Church of Christ which had a small membership who were easily identified. I knew some of his younger siblings. In those days, everyone called him “Bro”, a pet name I still do not know how it came about. Even from a distance, he came across as someone who was not troublesome – gentle, quiet, respectful, humble, unassuming, a gentleman to the core.
In 1969, a year after Eket was liberated from the Biafran forces, late Chief Obot left home for Port Harcourt which had also been liberated. After the hardship of the civil war years, every able-bodied man scrambled to get a job, mostly in the bigger towns since Eket was a very small town then. Late Chief Obot secured a job in Port Harcourt and as a committed community person, he sent for my eldest Brother, late Mr Edohoeket Asamudo, an older person, to come to Port Harcourt to take up a job. From Port Harcourt my brother wrote often to my mother and I happened to be the family “scribe” at the time so I was the one who read the letters and who also wrote the replies, so I had an idea of my brother’s progress or challenges in Port Harcourt. In his letters my brother praised the generosity and assistance he had been receiving from his younger benefactor, late Chief Obot, especially when my brother had a serious problem with soldiers of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt which almost cost him his life.
With the full take off of our new state, the South Eastern State, opportunities started opening up in Eket and other towns, thanks to the 3R policy of the Federal Military Government (Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction) under the Head of State, Major-General Yakubu Gowon. Many indigenes of the state returned home. Late Chief Obot returned to the village in 1973. Before then, the new constructed and painted lorry, “Eyak Eno Abasi” (“Leave it in the hands of the Almighty”) had made its debut in the village. It was operated by late Chief Obot’s cousin and mentor. Most of us did not know at the time that Chief Obot had a hand in the coming of the new motor vehicle until much later. The advent of the lorry created some sensation in the village because it was nearly 10 years since we last had a lorry in our village, a lorry christened “Hope in God” which those who were not fluent in the English called “Uba God”! Unknown to us all, the lorry was just the beginning of great things to come to our community.
On his return to Eket late Chief Obot started his transport business with just one vehicle, a white-coloured Ford Kombi bus which he christened “Abasi Ikpong” (“God Alone”). He plied the Eket-Aba route. We were always awakened between 3.00 and 4.00 am when the bus moved from one house to another to pick up passengers for the early morning departure to Aba. Later he founded a Driving Training School, a novelty at that time which he named “By the Grace of God Driving School”. The names he gave to his vehicles underscored his Christian orientation and his faith in the Almighty. The excitement of learning the art of driving was enough to make most of the young men in the village want to become drivers. At that time being able to drive was a big deal and many young men from the village and from far and wide signed up for the training.
As Chief Obot’s business expanded, different brands, models, shapes, colours, etc., of motor vehicles were regular sights in our village. By the Grace of God Motors became a household name in Eket and beyond. People from all walks of life started identifying him with his business name, “By the Grace”. I got much closer to him when he commissioned me to prepare accounting records for his business. Through reviews, interviews and discussions, I got a deeper insight into the operations of the business. I also gained an insight into his personal and business philosophy. The more I got to know him, the more I respected him for his openness and humility.
Late Chief Obot extended the electricity in his compound to homes in the village that were “wired” and provided street lights around his residence. He also drilled a borehole in his compound and allowed the villagers to fetch water from there and later from a new borehole at his workshop. The provision of water free of charge for the villagers was one of the most important benefits late Chief Obot gave to the community because Ikot Udoma had the misfortune of not having a perennial stream. In those days, we used to trek miles to other villages to fetch water from streams.
As if the above were not enough, late Chief Obot allowed children in the village to come and watch TV in his house. As the black and white television set in his sitting room boomed out music and a display of various entertainment programs, the youth of the village trooped out in large numbers to watch through the window of Chief Obot’s sitting room, the wonders being displayed on the black and white screen.

TRIBUTE TO A QUIET GENTLEMAN AND PHILANTHROPIST, LATE CHIEF SAMPSON SIMON OBOT - Part 2

A generous and kindly man, Chief Obot would always open his window curtains to allow the villagers feast their eyes and ears on the TV programs. He didn’t seem to mind the invasion of his privacy or the security implications of his actions.
The next development that the late Chief Obot brought to the village was the workshop! What a huge fabrication of metal bars and rods and long span roofing sheets! This workshop is said to be located on the spot that had been the traditional homestead of his great grandfather, late Obong Nkamiang Asamudo Nnuaedem. Obong Nkamiang had lived in Ikot Udoma between the 18th century and the late 1800’s. The workshop towers above “Afigh Akpuho” (i.e. the traditional meeting place of the village) which is said to have served as “Afigh” for Obong Nkamiang. Therefore, the workshop stands on a truly historical site. There young boys acquired skills in auto-mechanical repairs, auto-electrical repairs, panel-beating, etc. with which they have become prominent members of the community. Ikot Udoma village bubbled, thanks to late Chief Obot’s entrepreneurship and foresight in locating the workshop in the village. He could have built it somewhere else as advised by some people, but he chose to build it in his community.
In those good old days, people who needed help turned to late Chief Obot who was always ready to help. At a point in my life, I needed help, and Chief Obot was the only person in my community I could turn to. I had been awarded a car loan when I was a staff of the Unified Local Government Service of then Cross River State. By the time I left the service in 1985 there was an outstanding balance on the loan. Then the military government of Col Dan Archibong set up an asset recovery panel to recover all monies owed to all tiers of government in the former Cross River State. I was then working for a private company in Calabar, but I didn’t have the money to defray the outstanding loan. I sent a message to Chief Obot about my predicament with an offer to sell my Volkswagen Bettle car to him. Late Chief Obot left his business and personally attended the sitting of the panel at the Eket Local Government Secretariat, waited through the proceedings until my case came up and he paid the balance of my car loan while I was still using the car in Calabar. I continued using the car until I was ready to leave for further studies when I handed it over to Chief Obot and got the balance of the agreed selling price which I used to fund my university education. I was deeply touched by late Chief Obot’s humility and understanding.
Late Chief Obot was a businessman, a politician, a Christian and a community leader. In all facets of his life, he demonstrated integrity, compassion and generosity. He was simple and accessible to a fault. He supported many causes and projects aimed at improving the life of his community members. In business and politics, he was not known to harbour any inordinate ambition. Even when he lost a lot of money in a failed business deal, it did not trigger a change in his character. He maintained his calm demeanor while seeking justice.
Then came the final stage in my relationship with late Chief Obot. In 2017 the Kingmakers of Ikot Udoma village overwhelmingly selected Chief Sampson Simon Obot as the Village Head-elect and in 2019 the Akwa Ibom State Government granted him official recognition by issuing him with a Certificate of Recognition as the Village Head of Ikot Udoma in accordance with the extant laws of the state. Thus, late Chief Obot ascended the stool that his great grandfather, Obong Nkamiang Asamudo Nnuaedem, had occupied more than 150 years before him and had performed the traditional ritual of establishing his claim to royalty (Adikpoho Akwa Ubong). Chief Obot ascended the throne fully on the traditional foundation that his great grandfather had laid. Despite the opposition of reactionary forces, he was undaunted in the discharge of his royal responsibilities which he performed with courage and determination. He infused Christianity into his rulership and never failed to seek guidance from above before any major decisions or actions were taken. He brought integrity, compassion and diligence to the office and resisted the strenuous and sometimes disingenuous efforts of unprogressive elements to bring him down. As a progressive ruler and despite stiff opposition from traditionalists, he implemented reforms in burial practices in the community which greatly reduced the cost of such events.
While many of us would have wanted late Chief Sampson Simon Obot to remain with us for much longer, that decision was clearly beyond us mere mortals for no man can determine how long he will live in this world. Thus, on June 19, 2024, our Chief left us. We miss him sorely, but we know that it was a privilege to have him as a friend, a brother, a father, an uncle and a leader. Instead of hopelessly mourning his passing, let us wish him farewell and keep his legacies alive.

Tribute to a Dignified Father Beyond Measure

Chief Sampson Simon Obot Nkamiang Assamudo Nnuaedem Atakpa Udoma Ekpitat Ekongmbeh, affectionately called "By the Grace," was a father, a friend, a man of the people, an innovator, and a person of remarkable skill. He was a leader like no other, governing his people with joy, empathy, and resilience. His unwavering qualities were evident from his younger years to his time as the Village Head of Ikot Udoma.

Chief "By the Grace," your people mourn deeply at your passing, but we find comfort in the words of Isaiah 54:13-17. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, there is a time for everything under heaven. I believe your passing marks your time, and I have no questions for the Creator. My prayer is that God grants you eternal rest in the Lord.

Farewell, Daddy. Adieu, "By the Grace."

Your very close friend,
Paul Alex.

It pains to know you are not here with us for the rest of our lives.

My wish now will be to have you back healthy and alive

My brother, my education sponsor. It is very heartbreaking that your call to glory came earlier than what I thought and I had no chance to see you physically in your last moment. I couldnt deliver the palliative or end of life care that I learnt and practice on other people ,who enjoyed my warm touches and smiles and comforting words.Distance could not allow me to do that.
I remembered when I came home and took you to see a Dr that was recommended. He wanted to keep you in an old non dignified place, but you wouldn't mind because of your humbleness and self sufficient life, but I insisted that he transfer you to a more dignified and private facility because of your worth to me and the whole society.
Your humbleness, honesty and self sufficient is what I will always remember you for.
It is so many of those instances that I may not find space here to narrate them all.but to mention a few:
How you vacated your own personal bedroom for me and my husband and choose to lie on the mattress in another room in your house, so my husband could experience a better stay as it was his first time in Nigeria. You made sure the AirC and electricity was working well. You provided everything for comfort.
When you came to London in 2006 to visit us.You didnt mind where you slept, what strange things you were offered to eat. You just blended into the system during your short stay with us in London.
Unfortunately after that visit you kept on putting off another visit, as you have the dedication to serve the entire village.Yòu choose not to come to London to take a break, since there was no calmness and peace in the village. You sacrificed your holiday, your medical health ,your hard earned money etc to make sure every other person was doing ok.
I remembered all that you have done for All of us,your sibblings. All your sacrifices and training you gave free to almost all the young men in that village and beyond. If they are honest to God today they will recall these generosity.
Who in those days of your booming transportation did not go to Lagos even if they didnt have the money to pay the bus fee.
You were a good and kind brother, husband, father, grandfather and a peaceful leader.
You will be so missed but by Gods grace we will see you on the last day as those who die in Christ are sure of resurrection at the rapture.
The dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed(1st Corinthians 15 vs 51 to 53. Goodbye(Adios) my brother.
