Obituary

Charles “Charlie” Srull, a dedicated patriot and man of quiet strength, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on February 12, 1934, his life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his values of service, discipline, and integrity.

Charlie proudly served his country as a colonel in the United States Air Force, a career that defined much of his life and exemplified his devotion to protecting the freedoms he held dear. Even in retirement, his identity as a service member remained central to who he was, reflecting his deep pride in his nation and his duty.

Charlie’s relationships with his children and grandchildren evolved over the years, and he left a lasting impression on their lives through the example he set and the values he lived by. His children, Chip (and his wife, Laura) and Julie (and her husband, Clayton), and his five grandchildren — Aiden, Alexis, Audrey, Ashton, and Alea — were always held close in his heart, even if his presence in their lives was sometimes from a distance.

Charlie will be remembered by his friends and family as a man of principles and quiet wisdom, whose thoughtful demeanor and analytical mind shaped how he approached both life’s challenges and opportunities.

In accordance with his wishes, Charlie will be laid to rest with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. A service is planned for the summer of 2026, where loved ones will gather to honor his extraordinary life and contributions.

I worked with Charlie at FEMA and when I first encountered him I was off put by his intimidating demeanor. But as I got to know him I saw through that crusty layer and got to see his sense of humor, which was so dry that if you didn’t listen closely you would miss it. Charlie was a kind soul. He always made me laugh and I enjoyed evenings spent with friends.
I’m so sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

Charlie was one of our poker partners. Dan Blount and I drove to Roseville every Tuesday evening to play poker with him. He always seemed to enjoy our Tuesday evenings. I met Charlie when he moved into the house next door to us on Snapdragon Lane in Lincoln. Charlie was a proud man of his military career. He was quick witted and had a dry sense of humor. I will miss Charlie but will cherish his friendship.
