Dr Charles Daniel Lane, distinguished molecular biologist, scholar, sportsman and much-loved friend, will be remembered by many for both his scientific achievements and the warmth, humour and generosity with which he lived his life.

Born in London, Charles developed an early fascination with the natural world, inspired in part by his mother, the renowned biologist and conservationist Miriam Rothschild. From a young age he showed an inquisitive and adventurous mind that would later define both his scientific career and his personal life.

While his scientific accomplishments were remarkable, those who knew Charles will remember him equally for the life he lived away from the laboratory. He was an accomplished skier and keen tennis player who embraced life with enthusiasm and energy. He loved good food, lively conversation, and above all the company of friends. Whether on the tennis court, around a dining table, or sharing stories with his unmistakable wit and humour, Charles had a rare ability to make people feel welcome and valued.

He touched the lives of many people across the world and leaves behind enduring friendships, cherished memories and an extraordinary legacy. His intelligence was matched by kindness, curiosity and a wonderful sense of humour that stayed with him throughout his life.

Charles made a profound impression on all who knew him and will be remembered with great affection by family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances from many countries and walks of life.
