Obituary

Carla Gay (Fowler) Young, 70, of Mission Hills, Kansas passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, surrounded by family at Advent Health Shawnee Mission.

A Celebration of Life for Carla will be Saturday, October 11 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Indian Hills Country Club.

Carla was born on September 6, 1955, in Boonville, Missouri. The daughter of Carl Gilbert and Alice Marie (Fahrenbrink) Fowler, she married John Arthur Young III on July 9, 1983, in Prairie Village, Kansas. Carla attended the University of Missouri and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelors of Science in Education. Carla was a passionate educator throughout her life and taught at elementary schools in both Kansas and Missouri. She earned a graduate certificate in Gifted Education and went on to specialize in that area. In 1984, she left teaching to focus on raising her three children and homemaking. She returned to teaching in 2006 when she began teaching preschool.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John, her three children, Andrew (Mary) Young of Merriam, Kansas, Allison Young of San Antonio, Texas, and Adam (Haley) Young of Overland Park, Kansas. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren John Arthur Young V, Isla Young, Alice Young, Evelyn Young, and Adley Young, and three granddogs, Hank, Rogue, and Baloo.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, and her first baby, John Arthur Young IV.

Carla will be remembered for the love she showered on the children in her life, her epic 4th of July celebrations and Christmas gingerbread parties, and her sarcastic sense of humor. She assumed many roles in her life to include daughter, sister, teacher, wife, aunt, and mother, but her most favorite title was Oma. She maintained a strong circle of friends throughout her life and connected with them often. In her free time, Carla enjoyed traveling the world and spending time with her family. She was an avid gardener, accomplished hostess, and bourbon connoisseur. She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church and supported many charities that were close to her heart including Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries, the Children’s Place KC, and Cru.

Please join us in celebrating Carla’s life on October 11 at Indian Hills Country Club, 6847 Tomahawk Rd, Mission Hills, KS 66208. Please come prepared to share stories and fond memories. In lieu of flowers, please honor Carla with a donation to Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries.
