Byron Wallace

In loving memory of a life well-lived and deeply cherished.

Tribute

Byron Wallace, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, at 77. Born in Olympia, WA, on April 8, 1947, Byron was known for his generous spirit, practical wisdom, and creative energy. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and confident faith in Jesus Christ.

Byron found success in mortgage banking, but it was his zest for life that truly defined him. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fixing up the family cabin, RV adventures, and boating along Washington's coast. His passion for the Southwest and the family cabin near Index, WA brought him immense joy. A natural problem-solver and handyman, Byron was happiest when busy with projects or helping others. He built decks, remodeled rooms, and created countless things. Even as Parkinson's affected his abilities, he found new ways to plan and contribute, always making the best of his circumstances.

Byron's generosity and friendliness left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife Carol, children Scott (Heide) and Steven (Jessica), and grandchildren Amanda (Sam), Atalie, Reece, and River.

A memorial service will be held at Bethel Church in Richland, WA on October 5th at 2:00 pm. As we gather to remember Byron, we find comfort in the meaningful memories we shared and the legacy he leaves behind.

Byron will always be in my heart. I loved working on projects at the river with him. We would work and talk. He taught me a lot. Just this weekend I was trying to fix a roofing issue on a cabin and thought… WWBD? It turned out great but I sure was lonely without him.

Here's a photo of Byron at the cabin.I'm sure in this photo Byron was answering a question I had of the property, river, bird feeders, or something. A question I thought would have a quick answer. After quite awhile of Byron talking in great detail I would eventually forget what my question was. I'm going to miss those long talks.

Byron was more than a cousin to me. In my teen years and earlier we lived close to each other’s homes.
I was always dropping in to visit. He was like a brother and mentor to me and always offered a shoulder to lean on, a listening ear or a hug when I needed it.
I will miss his smile and fun times with family at the mountain cabin.
I look forward to a great reunion with Byron someday in Heaven.

A big part of our retirement was riding ATVs all over the southwest and Mexico. The ATVs were transported on top of the cab of the pickup truck. During this particular trip, Byron thought it best to store one ATV on top and one on the side! :-)

A 1997 email from Diane, a coworker of Byron's, highlights "Wallace-isms" that she picked up from him:

- Be at peace with your decisions
- Keep a crisp crease down the front of your pants
- Don't cuss when you are interviewing
- Casual dress means you can still get the work done
- Laptops don't bite as long as you don't have to use one yourself
- Don't get a nosebleed while alone with Byron - he'll faint
- It's good to have the fundamental desire to please
- 12:00 noon is LUNCHTIME!
- You don't need to know numbers to be a success in the mortgage business

Diane ends the email saying, "Byron, when we think of you we think of honestly, sincerity, hard working, respected, high ethics, personable, not afraid of challenges, leader, and the list goes on."

August 5, 1981 - Byron, Scott, and I were boating in the San Juans. I will never forget this particular morning when Byron woke up and said, "I have decided boating is for lazy people and I like it about as well as anything."

This picture is dad's 77th (and final) birthday, spent with our family in Pasco, WA. Parkinson's was so hard, but he always had a smile and an amazing resilience.
