Remember me... for I live within your heart.

Obituary

Bruce Leonard Martin, 75, of Texarkana, Texas, passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home on July 1, 2024. Born on March 10, 1949, in Key West, Florida, and raised in Idabel, Oklahoma, Bruce dedicated his life to education and family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Dianne; son Waylon Martin and wife Annie of Cassville, Missouri; daughter Melody Wolter and husband Jason of Fulshear, Texas; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Gail Self of Idabel, Oklahoma and many beloved nephews, nieces and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Truman; mother, Mary D.; and brother, Roy.

As an educator, Bruce made a lasting impact on countless lives throughout his career. He taught Texas History and later served as a school principal at Liberty-Eylau ISD, shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning in his students. After a brief retirement, he began working with individuals struggling with addiction at Hazel Street Recovery Center, and later returned to public education as a Language Arts teacher at Ashdown New Tradition ALE School.

Bruce was a devoted fan of the Oklahoma Sooners, never missing a chance to cheer on his beloved football and softball teams. He will be remembered as a genuine and humorous person with eclectic tastes in music, literature and art. His daily Facebook posts were eagerly anticipated for their wit and insight. Friends and former students often sought his guidance during challenging times, knowing they could rely on his thoughtful advice and support. To his grandchildren, he was “Papa,” a role model who loved to dance, tell silly jokes, and always made time to play.

Per Bruce's longstanding wish, his ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony at a location that held special childhood memories for him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out during this difficult time, offering condolences, prayers, and sharing stories that have provided comfort in the wake of their sudden loss.

Bruce's legacy of kindness and humor will live on through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Mr Martin was my Texas History teacher. His class was my most favorite class of all my years in school. He was a friend in my adult life and we always had lots of good conversations. He made me laugh but he also was a great listener. He was a great man and is missed and will always be.
