Obituary
It is with tearful hearts and souls we announce the passing of Bren Vander Zwaag (54) on January, 1st, 2026.
He is survived by his wife, Cristiane, children Paige (Ross) and Kobe (Molly), parents Sybren and Catherine, siblings Craig (Kathy), Renee, Kayte (Jas), Aron, Adam and Josh. As well as nieces and nephews; Noah, Celina, Samuel, Kyla, Jag, Grayson, Alice, Mali, and Bronson.
Bren was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia on August 1st, 1971 to Sybren and Catherine. He grew up in Conquerall Mills, went to school at Hebbville Academy and Park View Education Centre, although he graduated in South Carolina. He was privileged to spend time in Europe and America when his dad was on work assignments with Michelin.
Bren was truly a selfless person who put others before himself in every aspect of his life. He would help anyone who needed it. His kindness and generosity left a long-lasting impression on everyone he met. Alongside his big heart, Bren had a great sense of humour, and was the initiator for bringing together family, friends and colleagues. Above all, nothing brought Bren more happiness than being a father. His kids, Paige and Kobe, were his pride and joy.
Work never felt like work to Bren. It was a source of enjoyment and purpose. From an early age, he was happiest when he was busy. If there was something to be done, Bren was already doing it. At the age of seven, on Friday night before bed, he would get his work clothes and boots out and ask, “what are we doing tomorrow, Dad?”. Saturday was a day of fun. His entrepreneurial spirit was activated when he was part of JA (Junior Achievers) and he made earwig traps to be sold and ended up with a CBC interview.
Bren’s biggest passion in life was being an entrepreneur. He owned several businesses throughout his life. He started his first business at the age of seven, mowing lawns for friends of his family. In recent years, he spent most of his time working in his business MetroGutter & Home Services, along with his most recent venture, Gutter-Con, a conference to help gutter company owners across North America, where he enjoyed connecting with fellow gutter lovers. Bren was also a big family man. He loved spending time with his wife and kids, parents and extended family. Some of Bren’s favorite times were travelling together to various parts of the world, especially to Brazil.
Bren had many hobbies he enjoyed. He loved flying his kite at the beach, riding his motorcycle, and making the best steak anyone has ever eaten. He enjoyed sharing good food with loved ones, especially at his self-made outdoor bar and BBQ at his place.
He was larger than life.
With heartfelt gratitude, we thank the compassionate caregivers who supported Bren in his final journey.
We extend our sincere thanks to the staff of the QEII Emergency department, the VG 7A unit, and the Palliative Care team for your expert and deeply humane care.
We are especially grateful to Dr. Maya Elsa Kovacs and Nurse Meagen Farmer. A profound thank you to Bren's family physician, Dr. Craig Ferguson of Bridgewater, for his lifelong dedication and partnership, along with great care from Dr. Hughie Fraser of Bridgewater. We also specially recognize Palliative Care Nurse Sandie on VG 7A, whose grace brought light to our most difficult moments.
You honored Bren’s humanity with every action, for which we are eternally thankful.
The Family.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 5th at 1:30PM at the All Nations Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The service will be live streamed on YouTube.

Please accept our deepest condolences - we are thinking of all of you and hoping that time will heal this pain.
We had the pleasure of getting to know Bren over the last 5 years through Cristiane and whilst we met him only a handful of times, each of those meetings were so meaningful and fun that it felt like we had known each other for years. Bren always spoke about Kobe and Paige and you could tell they were his pride and joy. He seemed like a genuine family man, who doted on Cristiane and lovingly spoke about his parents and his childhood. His passion for the gutter industry was so obvious. He was the master of making steaks - and we are yet to eat a better steak anywhere in the world! Our last time together was on Bren's last birthday, which we are so honored to have been part of. He gave us additional tips on making a good steak amongst the many other topics we discussed. We will cherish all those wonderful memories of Bren.
May his soul rest in peace.
I was deeply saddened to hear about Bren’s passing on January 1, 2026. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this immensely difficult time.
I briefly met Bren, his memory lives on in the love and warmth of your family, which I’ve been privileged to witness during the visits to Calgary. By all accounts, he was a remarkable man, and the loss of someone so cherished at the age of 54 is truly heartbreaking.
Renee, your strength and kindness during this time are a testament to the close bond you share with your family. I hope you find comfort in knowing Bren's spirit will always be a part of your lives—his love, laughter, and presence will never fade from your hearts.
To your parents, I cannot imagine the pain of losing a beloved son, but I admire how your family holds together with grace and resilience. Please hold onto the beautiful memories, and may they provide you strength in the days to come.
I am keeping you all in my thoughts during this time of sorrow and wishing peace and healing for your family.
With deepest sympathy,
Kelly Christopher
We are very sad for your loss. We send our condolences and prayers. We only knew Bren as a youngster but can tell that he developed into a wonderful adult. He was a great witness to the saying, "It is not the days in your life but the life in your days that matter".
I will always treasure the memories we built over many years together in our business careers.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire family.
In the gutter industry, he’s a true leader and a forward‑thinking innovator. He has built a genuine community around his work—driven by a sincere generosity and a desire to help the people in his industry grow and succeed. His desire to help people will live on through his partners in gutter-con.
Anytime that I was with Bren or talking to him on the phone he always made me feel like we were best friends, ( I am sure he made everyone feel that way) although there was distance in our friendship we would always find a way to connect. I am so grateful for every moment I had with Bren and will miss him so much. Sending him and all his family love and a big hug.
Love you Brother!!
I always looked forward to spending time with him. Bren loved a diverse culinary experience we'd scope-out a different restaurant each visit.
When the "gutter guys" were in town. Bren always invited me along for dinner and drinks. These times are forever memories.
When chilaxing at my place we'd enjoy good conversation, laughter, family stories, and ridiculous tick-talk sitcoms, while sipping several glasses of La Vieille Ferme, red. Better known as "Chicken wine". The label says it all.
Bren loved family ties. Last year I vacationed to Brazil with him, Cris, and his mom, Cathy. Then to Orlando with extended family. And a road-trip back to Halifax with him. This past June the family gathered in Ottawa to lay-rest his grandmother (Mannion). In October, a family reunion out West. Most recently Bren, Cris, Cathy and Siep traveled to Europe. Bren's sisters, Renee and Kayte met-up with them in France. There was one last trip to Brazil to be with Cris' family. Nothing kept Bren down from enjoying life!
I'll miss our phone calls, texts, visits and vacations. Being with Bren was BIG FUN.
There are no words to express our family's loss.
Bren was a beautiful human being.
Lucky are those who knew him.
Cris and Bren were always eager to make things happen. Traveling, hosting, sharing, and loving.
He was an amazing father to Paige, and Kobe. Bren's light will keep shinning through them.
With loving memories and sunken heart.
Love you.
Aunt Laura
Take care of yourselves.
I Hope to see him in Heaven

Bren was a business partner, a very good friend, and someone we felt was part of our family.
Everyone felt that way when Bren was there.
I am deeply saddened that we only met a few years ago, because it felt as though we had known each other for over 50 years.
The entire OAM Aluminum team and I will miss him greatly not only for his professional and dedicated way of working,
but also, for his sense of humor and the jokes he always shared.
I truly cherished all the meals we enjoyed together, including the moments spent with our families.
Bren will be remembered forever.
