Obituary
Bernard (Bernie) Harris, 95, of Little River Harbour Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on March 25th, 2025, at the Digby General Hospital.
Bernie was born on July 8, 1929, in Comeau’s Hill, Nova Scotia to the late Oscar and Annie May Harris.
Bernie grew up fishing in Little River Harbour where he loved to pick strawberries and apples when in season. In the 1950’s he moved to Toronto Ontario (followed by many of his siblings), where he worked as a typesetter at Abitibi Paper. It was here in Toronto where he met his future wife, Mary Savoy from New Brunswick. In the late 1960’s Bernie and Mary returned to his beloved Nova Scotia, where he built a bungalow directly across from the home he grew up in. Bernie and Mary lived in New Brunswick for a few years where Bernie worked as a Construction Foreman with Irving Oil. They then returned to Little River Harbour and Bernie obtained his fishing license and purchased a 38 ft fishing boat. He finished out his working years fishing lobster and herring. Throughout their life together Bernie and Mary had an open-door policy; never hesitating to provide a helping hand to family or friends needing help getting back on their feet.
In his later years, Bernie resided in the Digby area. He thoroughly enjoyed his time living at the Digby East Fish and Games Campground, where he made many friends. Most recently Bernie was travelling to Deep Brook/Waldec Lions Club to play bingo weekly, where he became a popular storyteller and prankster.
Still determined to maintain his independence into his later years, Bernie purchased an e-bike and scooter when his driver’s license was medically revoked. Even at the age of 95 he travelled the streets and sidewalks throughout the Digby area.
Bernie loved music, dancing, camping and fishing. He was known for his famous Rappie Pie, storytelling, jokes, pranks, and overall sense of humour. Bernie had a very sharp mind, even in his 90’s.
Bernie will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his loving daughter Gloria (Harris) Donaldson and son-in-law Wayne Donaldson, grandchildren Jon-Wayne Donaldson (Tanya), Dwayne Donaldson (Krista), and Shawn Donaldson (Krista); great-grandchildren Lucas Donaldson, Connor Donaldson (Kayla), Gage Donaldson, and Shane Donaldson, and siblings Doug Harris (Joan) of Brighton; Yvonne Harris (Maurice) of Toronto, and Helen Wyman (Charles) of Barrie, as well as by many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
Bernie is predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years Mary (Savoy) Harris, as well as his siblings Jean Milford (died in infancy), Stillman Harris, Albertsons Harris (died in infancy), George (Snookie) Harris, Herman Harris, Mable Harris, SR Alice Harris, Margaret (Harris) Nickerson (Delmar), and Oscar Harris (Elaine), as well as his beloved dog Pasha.
A celebration of life for Bernie will be held on April 26th, 2025, from 1:00pm-3:00pm at the Deep Brook/Waldec Lions Club:
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bernie’s name to the SPCA; as Bernie had a special place in his heart for animals.
