Benjamin F. Wetter

Obituary
On Sunday, October 27, 2024, the day after his beloved Massillon Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes had secured victories on the gridiron, Benjamin F. Wetter passed away in Henderson County, North Carolina, at the age of 89. Ben was born January 26, 1935, to Benjamin F. and Margaret O. (Treese) Wetter and was raised in Massillon, Ohio. He was a graduate of Massillon Washington High School where he was a proud member of the Massillon Tiger Swing Band. Ben completed his undergraduate degree at Ashland College and earned his D.D.S. from what is now the Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry. During his time in dental school, Ben met the love of his life, Maye (Johnson). They were married in 1959 and enjoyed 64 years together.
Ben served in the USAF at Forbes AFB in Topeka, Kansas. Following his service, he and Maye returned to Ohio where he established his dental practice in the Village of Seville. He also served in many community, civic, and educational endeavors. Always a sports fan, Ben discovered a love of umpiring and earned his ASA, USSA, and OHSAA officiating licenses. He was also a lover of music, especially instrumental and served as the handbell choir director at Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church. After retiring from dentistry, Ben had a variety of post-retirement jobs ranging from working at Starbucks to bagging groceries at Publix in Jacksonville, Florida, where he and Maye moved in 2006. In 2022, they moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they resided with their daughter Marti and son-in-law Joe.
Above all, Ben loved and cherished Maye and his family. Together, they parented Dr. Marti (Dr. Joseph) Moore, Cindy (Nathan) Glass, Bruce Wetter, and Laura Milton. Nothing made Ben happier than when his family gathered together. He loved to have fun and always had a joke or a witty comment on hand.
In addition to Maye, his children and their spouses, Ben is survived by grandchildren Lauren (Jonathan) Roth, Ben (Moira) Moore, Daniel (Jennifer) Cristiano, and Alexzander Milton; great-grandchildren Eleanor Roth, Giorgio Cristiano, and Samuel Moore and several step-grandchildren.
Ben chose to donate his body to Elon University because he was so appreciative of those who similarly donated while he was a student in dental school. Services will be held January 26, 2025, in North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Four Seasons Foundation, Elizabeth House, 211 N. Main St. Hendersonville, NC 28792 (fourseasonsfdn.org); or Massillon Tiger Swing Band (tigerswingband.com).

“Words of sympathy feel inadequate in expressing grief and sorrow for a loss so great. Sending a warm embrace and all my love during this sad time.”
My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May Gods peace be upon you. I have such fond memories of you all. Mr. Wetter (as I called Him) was always so kind and welcoming whenever I stopped by for a visit when in town. My Wife and I so enjoyed visiting with Maye and Ben when they stopped in to see us in Arizona many years back. My deepest condolences to you all. A man like Ben Wetter certainly leaves a lasting mark in our memories and on our hearts.
Your friend always
Marty Fauss
May the grief of his loss, be tempered by the peace of knowing Ben lived a full life and even in death, he reminds us of the joy in giving.

It was my pleasure to claim Ben as my friend and dental colleague throughout his career. We initially bonded as fellow CWRU dental school graduates, but our friendship grew beyond dentistry as we often discussed our families and his love of being an umpire outside of the office. I will cherish those conversations.
He was an excellent, ethical, and kind dentist who cared deeply about his patients. However he was a far more honorable person.
It made me smile when I read that Ben donated his body to Elon University for medical study. To me, this perfectly demonstrates his altruism and that is how I will always hold him in my memories.
I trust your memories of him will give you comfort and strength during this time of mourning.
Most sincerely, Chris
Sandy Kalmeyer
May you find peace and comfort.
I have fond memories of Ben, a kind and gentle man.
Those we love and lose are always connected by heartstrings.
Love, Holly
