A man lives for as long as we carry him inside us,
for as long as we carry the harvest of his dreams,
for as long as we ourselves live,
holding memories in common, a man lives.”

Ben,
Ben,我们都在为你歌唱,为你祈祷。

Hi! Ben, I'm a little fan from Taiwan. I want to tell you that you're my favorite Phantom actor in all of the Phantom of the Opera. Your singing and acting deeply moved me, making me feel that the Phantom truly came to life. I also loved your performance in Love Never Dies, which is how I got to know you, but I feel like I discovered you too late… Recently, I've started preparing for my university exams, and your singing has been a great comfort to me when I felt tired. So, I wanted to say thank you, and I miss you very much…

Hey… Ben… I wrote something here in January, but tho, I still wanted to let you know… I wrote about how you inspired me and you still are, to follow what I love, theatre. The first step has been accomplished. And I was accepted to acting school, Its not a ticket to having a job but it gives me floor, space to create. You were someone who held me those difficult months, when I did not know what will be, If I get in or not, and the heavy thoughts of being in the work I hate. Thank you, thank you so much. Now I have an oppoturnity to study, what I love…

It seems to have been quite some time yet I'm still in denial. A friend asked what I'd listen to to help keep concentrated and I answered with no hesitation that it had been your singsing. But I stopped the day you left. I've been too weak to hear your voice without feeling depressed about the fact that you're gone. My life has, therefore, somehow been silenced, muted, deprived of the sense of security knowing that you're out there. Right now at this moment, for the first time since that day, your 'Til I Hear You Sing is playing in my earbuds, your expressions and gestures playing in my mind. I'm writing to let you know that I'm finally sort of okay with this. As long as your music plays, you're alive to me. I MISS YOU.

Dear Ben. I’m here writing to let you know that I finally heard Anna’s beautiful voice in a concert, in which she performed with other talents in Shanghai. She was there singing those melodies that blew me away and, inevitably, truly reminded me of you. When boys were singing ‘Till I hear you sing’ together I couldn’t hold back my sobs any more… Letting my tears flow freely might felt like a kind of farewell to you and yet, for many years to come, I know I'll still find it hard to let go.
I met and talked to Anna at the autograph session after the performance. She was so brightly shining and warm. Though I didn’t mention your name, I believe that she read everything I intended to say from my face. I guess that was a moment that I got some connection with you once more.
Love,
Sylvia

I'm aware that I'm the first one to write words here in 2026. So Happy new year to you, Ben. No matter where you are, I send my best wishes to you forever.
Please forgive me for arriving here to write this message now. Long time ago I mustered my courage to write something, but I was defeated by huge sadness every time. Now, when opening this website, when hearing your singing, will I still shed tears? The answer is as always, I will.
In the past few days, I always cried when watching your final lair(with Kelly and Jeremy)in POTO. In fact, I hear you singing every day. This is true, and this is an essential part in my life. When I met Kelly in China last year, I asked the same question as I did 6 years ago in London: Which of the Phantoms do you like best? She said your name, without any hesitation, which is the same as her answer in 6 years ago. She cried for missing u so much. I miss you, we are all missing you.
It's not over now your music of the night, with health, love and music forever. You have already been here, I believe it.
Till we meet again, my best angel of music, my hero.
❤Love from Yorlin, your Chinese fan.

Thank you, Ben
For your integrity, gentleness and quiet strenght. For showing that truth on stage doesnt need excess, only honesty. That leadership can be kind and commiment can exist without ego.
Your work - and the way you lived reminded me that it is possible to create without loosing oneself.
I carry those values with me, always, as I try to move through the world
With gratitude.

(I think I posted something longer earlier but can't seem to find it so have decided to do a new one). Although I first met Ben briefly when he was in Spamalot, my first meaningful connection was when he was Phantom in Love Never Dies when I had a long chat with him in his dressing room between shows about voice sustainability. I can still recall him asking me about my family and the names of my sons and wanting the conversation to be more than just 'technical'. This stood out as, like all others, I was enraptured by his voice and presence but here was a man who generally connected with all he met. From there, our friendship was cemented. Some years on, I received the immense privilege of being trusted to be part of gorgeous Melle's post-stroke rehabilitation journey. (I recall like it was yesterday the phone call I had with Ben when Melle had left hospital and come home in 2022). Then and ever since I witnessed the most beautiful of love stories. I can attest indeed that they are indeed two ones and that I have never in my life been more inspired by any other couple. I am forever grateful that I have had this privilege to have seen this role model of what it means to be a spouse (from both sides) and of course to have known and loved such a beautiful & outstanding man! Fly high in the heavens dear Ben xxx

In many ways Ben was old-fashioned. In all the best senses of that word. Polite and respectful to his elders and those that had gone before but quietly cheeky and delightful with it. As our Phantom in Love Never Dies he wore the mantel of star and company leader with great grace, responsibility and humility. Two comparisons immediately came to mind as I worked on that show : Rob Guest in Les Mis and Jill Perryman in Hello Dolly. They also understood that a happy company comes from the top down. A grumpy, petulant star can often filter down to disharmony and misbehaviour down the ranks, But tall, handsome Ben, wise beyond his then young years led us gallantly from the top. Valé dear Ben. You were a superstar on every level but mostly as a wonderful, loyal human being. The loss of you in their lives will be profoundly felt by those nearest and dearest to you: your beautiful Melle, your brother Al, your proud parents and the wide circle of friends around the world. Rest in peace Till I Hear You Sing Once More. Xx

I first met Ben on Day One of rehearsals for “Company” in London and we were paired together for one of those slightly awkward “icebreaker” exercises. He gave me a 500 watt grin and scooped me up into a vigorous tango. We then laughed all morning and that was it. With those matinee idol looks he was the ultimate gentleman, but with a wicked sense of fun too. Backstage, we had endless discussions about Australian snacks and he would then test me on my knowledge of Tim Tams, Cherry Ripe bars , Lamingtons and ANZAC biscuits. They were precious months all together on that show, and Ben was our serene pillar of calm through the madness. I will never forget you, Ben, and if I ever make it to Australia I’ll have you to thank for a superior knowledge of the supermarket confectionery aisle.

I consider it such an honour to have shared in a small part of Ben's life - both at WAAPA and in Love Never Dies. One of my first memories of Ben was him dancing (alongside the late Matthew Leonard) in a studio D tap class, all smiles and charisma, so Jenny wouldn't watch his feet. His 'Amsterdam' lives in my memory forever and that laugh of his was infectious.
Watching Ben lead the cast of Love Never Dies was one of the most inspirational and transformative moments of my career. Passionate, dedicated, fiercely protective and respectful of his fellow performers, he knew exactly how to keep the company together and I was completely in awe.
I loved how he didn't take himself too seriously (I'm pretty sure this photo was taken as he asked, deadpan: "do I have something in my teeth?")
Rest well Ben.
Love to all who loved you xx

When I first met Ben I knew I was in the presence of a remarkable man.
So so charming. Giving time to everyone in the most genuine way. He made people feel seen and heard. Ben had time for me in a way that helped calm and reassure me in a pressurised work setting. Very grateful to have had him around at an extraordinary time. He made us feel really special. Moreover, he was rehearsing in the day whilst playIng The phantom at night,- not that any of us would know as he was rock steady. Never complained. I loved joking with Ben- as he would always trump me. I love finding out more about him and being a tiny part of this wave of love and adulation from our industry and beyond. Rest well Ben. Love to your darling wife, family and friends. I feel very lucky to have shared LEADING MAN CORRIDOR with you.
Love from,

THE GREAT GOLF HEIST AT SECRET HARBOUR.
Being poor students Ben and I decided that we didn’t want pay $20 EACH for a golf cart. So we came up with what we called the ‘great golf heist. ‘
We each called the pro shop separately to book in our tee times. I booked for 8am and Ben booked for 8:07am. I booked a cart and Ben told them he’d walk.
As we drive up to the course I dropped Ben off down the road in case any cameras saw us coming in together. I drive in and parked and he walked in a few minutes behind me.
I went in and paid for my round and $20 for the use of a cart. I went to the first tee to get ready.
Ben paid for his round (no cart fee) after I left the pro shop and explained that he was playing on his own and asked if there were there any other single golfers he could join. The guy said if you hurry there is someone about to hit off , he might let you join him. 😂
He rushed over to the first tee and it was then that our wappa acting skills were truly put to the test.
We introduced ourselves to each other, shook hands and I made an obvious gesture (for the pro shop cameras) for him to share my cart.
We teed off, hopped in the cart and drove on down the first fairway. We gave each other a high five to celebrate our genius plan. We saved $10 and it was one of the best days on the course with Ben I can remember.
We had so many great days playing golf and I will always remember it SO fondly.

Beautiful Ben. Mik and I consider ourselves so, so lucky to have known you; to have shared in your's and Melle's spectacular wedding and laughed along with you all as we took your wedding photos; to have spent time together in the various facets of our lives; to have watched you freakin' nail Phantom (thank you for the friends and family tickets to Love Never Dies!); to have farewelled you both from Sydney airport as you embarked on your England adventures; to have cried with you upon news of Melle's stroke ... actually, Louise did most of the crying, you were incredibly brave and strong despite going through so much; to have spent time with you both on your return to QLD; to have laughed with you at that burger joint in Hamilton about the silly meal names - Amy and Olive won't forget that; to have boasted to you about our girls ... you were always so interested and wanting to know; and especially to have had this memorable lunch with you both in July. We were so blessed. Thanks for the ridiculously large wine (it sent Melle and I a bit silly, I reckon. Wine at lunchtime!) and I'm glad you had a beer. "Stuff it," you said, I'm having one." And you were already pretty hilarious as your meds made you extra chatty. Melle had to keep shushing you. You'd clap your hand quickly over your mouth to try to stop the verbal diarrhea. But something that I will never forget from that day (Lou here) were the adoring looks you gave Melle. Your eyes lingered long, as did your hand on her knee. Your love was immense and endless. All our love to you. We'll never forget you. And Melle, we're here for you whenever you need us xxxxxxxxx

Dear Ben,
We started writing this while we were sitting in Brisbane Airport, after a 2 week trip that had a big Ben-sized hole in it. It’s been 3 years since you both left the UK and we were so looking forward to precious time with you and Melle - but it was not meant to be.
We struggled to finish it because we had no idea how to sign off on our friendship - one charted by wonderful highs, as you both flourished on the London stage, and crushing lows, as we helped you both navigate the scariest moments of your lives.
So, we’re borrowing from Sondheim, one of your favourites - as we’ll always be sorry, and we’ll always be grateful.
We’re sorry. Sorry that we’ll never speak and laugh with you and your great Aussie humour, which you somehow retained despite everything; sorry that we’ll never hear your tremendous voice again, soaring above our heads; sorry that you never got to hug our cheeky Madeleine, born the day after you left. We’re lucky that both Elizabeth and Maddie know and love their Uncle Ben and how special he was to our family.
But most of all, we’re grateful. Grateful that you and Al met all those years ago, and struck up a bond which is everlasting. Grateful that you brought Melle into our lives and who we felt like we had known forever after just one evening (you know, the one where we turned you both into tubs of bolognese). Grateful that I could use my skills to help you both when you needed it the most. I’ll always be sorry that, in the end, I couldn’t do more. Screw cancer.
We still don’t know how to finish so we’ll just say this: the world was better with you in it - but whichever beautiful place you now find yourself in, we hope they have 24 hour sport and a decent Aussie beer. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Forever privileged and grateful to have known and loved such a beautiful & outstanding man! XXXXXXXX

I will never forget the first time I saw you in LND. And never regret what you inspired me to do. I did not know you personally yet you turned my life around. You passed away, and I made a decision to not to be afraid and quit my current collage to do what I truhly love and what was my long time hobby. Even after your death you inspired me, now I am prepearing, no longer scared and applying to collage of performing arts. Life is short, and you need to do what you love. I will be forever grateful to you. No matter if I will get accepted or not. I will find my way to theatre. Thank you for giving me strength. You are forever my inspiration.

It’s obvious that a lot of people will remember Ben through his exceptional talent – and it was exceptional. I don’t mean to take anything away from that talent but, as someone who has the privilege of working with great talents every day, his voice is not how I will remember Ben in the first instance. I will remember him as simply one of the greatest of men. The way he balanced his life, kept so grounded for everyone, managed his success and prioritized his primary relationship with that incredible woman, was inspirational to everyone.
In a strange way, he was an enigma to me – because I did not understand how someone could be so many things to so many people but never give away so much of his energy that he lost himself in the process.
I feel so privileged to have known this man and his unique take on life and yes, of course... to have heard that magnificent voice that communicated his spirit through music with such ease and yet such power.
When we lose people there are obligatory things that people say. With Ben it is all true, in fact, words are not enough. I can only hope that he was aware of just how many peoples lives he touched and how many of us were changed for the better because of his energy and engagement with the everyone around him. He really was the best of men.

Beyond sad and also incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to know and love Ben like so many. I have never been more inspired by anyone than by him in his unfailing support of his beautiful Melle and then by her with Ben. Theirs is the most beautiful of love stories. It is also indeed a measure of the man that so many like me will be grieving. Enormous love to Melle, Patricia, Michael, Al Lewis, Chrissy O'Neill and all of their beloved family and friends at this time and I truly hope they can find some comfort in knowing how deeply Ben and they are loved xx

I remember it vividly, as if it were only yesterday, the very first time I listened to Pavarotti and irrevocably fell in love with his voice.
There was warmth in it, and passion, and how they all lit up in his eyes each time he sings for us, every note carrying the pulse of something divine.
The way he sustained and improvised “Vincerò,” how he held it, went beyond the original score, long past the 16 notes, and reached straight into my chest, it revived what had long lain silent inside my heart.
I wept for him, for the day of his final performance, and for the day of his passing. The void he left has never truly gone away. And so was yours.
If Luciano is the daylight I bathe and swim in, then you are the darkness of the night that enfolds me. It’s strange how much you two share, yet yours carries a heavier gravity, and depth, while his embodies the brilliance of the sun.
Both of you possess that rare gift, the immense talent, the effortless command of a sustained note, the kind that feels like second nature. But the difference lies in how those notes fill the world around you. With Luciano, it was a breeze, a whisper of spring, warm, tender, softly radiant.
With you, it is earth and shadow deep, resonant, like the night announcing itself. You struck the score with precision, and delivered it with a richness that could still the air, make us wonder at the stories you didn’t tell.

The brilliant Swedish writer and behaviorist, Anders Hallgren, writes in his little book on the process of grief that when we lose someone, they never truly leave us. Their existence simply changes from one state to another; from one where we can see and hear them, to one where we cannot.
But the fact remains.
They’re still exactly, where they’ve always been. In our thoughts and in our hearts – we just can’t see them anymore.
Ben will never leave us – not truly.
He lives on through his musical legacy, his performances and the memories, we have of him. His voice will live on, as well as our admiration for his marvelous talents and breathtaking performances.
But most of all, I will remember him as a person; His humor, his cheekiness, his care and most of all his compassion. He cared about others in a way that is rare, selfless and honest, and he could never quite comprehend that others would wish to show the same to him. It always seemed a complete surprise to him that others would travel the world, far and wide, just to see him. To chat, to laugh together, or simply show him that you cared. Things, that others might have taken as a given – Ben never did.
The last time I saw Ben, was after the second to last evening performance of “Company” in London. A good friend, who I met, thanks to Ben, and I stood outside the Guilgud Theatre, at the stage door waiting for him. We had gone to see that evening’s performance, as we had promised him we would months earlier. It was freezing cold outside the theatre that evening, and we were discussing what on Earth was taking him so long. Other actors came and went, but Ben was still nowhere to be seen. Finally, all of a sudden, Ben appeared at the door. He looked around quickly, searching, before seeing us, and with the biggest grin plastered on his face, he practically jumped over to where we stood. To paint the mental image, imagine, if you will, Ben grinning from ear to ear skipping towards you. Because of his height, he honestly reminded me of a flagpole swinging from side to side in the wind in that moment, as he came towards us. When he finally stood before us, we just looked at him, quite stunned, and remarked dryly, “Someone’s in good mood tonight,” to which he excitedly blurted, “Hugh Jackman is backstage! I just met him!” “Really? What was he like?” We inquired, to which he practically squealed, ”He was NICE!” All while he giggled like school girl. He was SO happy and in the face of such pure joy, we completely forgot that it had ever been cold to begin with.
I’ve always said those smiles of his could melt the North Pole, if he ever cared to try. (Watch out, glaciers in Heaven!)
When we said our goodbyes that evening, it never occurred to me that that would be the last time I saw him. And when I look back now that is exactly how I wish to remember him; exuberantly happy, eyes sparkling with giddiness and a triumphant grin on his face. And not just because he himself had performed wonderfully that night, as he always did, but because he had met someone, he clearly considered a hero. Though, I will always argue Ben was the true hero.
I will remember, when my friend and I remarked upon his mostly supporting role to LuPone’s character in the show that he grinningly exclaimed, “Yes! Isn’t it great? Patti is doing all the work. All I have to do is stand there!” He joked, while we groaned and good-naturedly shook our heads and remarked that it was HIM, we came to see.
We didn’t take any photos that night, as we normally did, when we met. He, in his giddiness, couldn’t stand still, and I didn’t have the heart to ask it of him.
There would surely be another time for that. He should just enjoy his triumph, I thought, and so we said our goodbyes, exchanged hugs and told each other to take care as usual.
That was the last time I saw him.
When he toured with the “Bodyguard,” I couldn’t go to see him, and though it annoyed me greatly that I had to stay home for work, I told myself there would be another time to visit and carried on.
That was not to be.
The pandemic hit, and the rest is history.
The relentless chain of events that then took place seemed like an endless line of accidents that didn’t want to end.
When I received the news of Ben’s illness, I was devastated and cried for days on end. I seemed like such a blow after having hoped for years that fate had finally taken a turn for the better for him and Melle, and that they were okay.
Like many others, I had never quite relinquished the hope that someday, he might return to the stage again - That we would somehow get to meet again.
That was not to be.
Instead, I will always cherish those last words he wrote to me, and I marvel at the fact that even in his final months, he never lost his spirit, his kindness, his compassion. He always cared for others, and asked so little for himself. And it was my biggest wish that he knew that others cared just as much for him. That he, for once, managed to take in the care and compassion that others were showing him and that he so greatly deserved, instead of just carrying on giving, as he always did. At the very least, just this once.
Be to others, as you wish others to be to you. Ben was the embodiment of that.
Ben was the kindest, sweetest, funniest guy I’ve ever met. Talented beyond belief and with a beautiful voice to match that will never be rivalled. But most of all, he was a beautiful person, flaws and all, and I will never forget him - never.
Ben will never leave us. He was always too loyal for that. Too devoted to those he cared about.
He will always be exactly where he’s always been- In our thoughts, in our memories and in our hearts. There he will still linger – we just cannot see him anymore.
Though I’m sure he’s currently touring Heaven with his glorious voice, enchanting everyone with his singing - and winning the crowd one glorious, triumphant smile at a time.
I’ll be down here cheering you on.
To you, Ben, I will say this: Thank you, Ben, for being you. Thank you for everything that was you. May God bless you always and may you find peace.
My heartfelt condolences to Melle, Ben’s family and everyone who was lucky enough to know this marvel of a man.

As a lighting student at WAAPA back in 2004, my very first placement was as a followspot operator on The Witches of Eastwick. Every night, I would wait excitedly for my cue to followspot the lead during Dance with the Devil — my favourite number in the show. The performer playing Daryl (the Devil) was so incredibly memorable, and it was such a joy to contribute to his performance each night.
That performer, of course, was a young Ben Lewis in his final year of musical theatre. Even as a student, Ben’s stage presence was extraordinary — he radiated talent and charisma, and it was clear he was destined for a remarkable career on stage.
I kept a photo from that production (originally for my student lighting portfolio!), never realising that the person in the photo would go on to become one of the best talents in Australian musical theatre.
It has been such a delight to watch Ben’s journey unfold — from WAAPA to The Holy Grail to Love Never Dies and so many more. I only wish we could have seen him continue to light up the stage as he always did.

My beloved Ben. my rock, my oracle and so often my guide and my inspiration. You never ever disappointed me - only made me proud, so very proud. You taught us all so much about how to live life and how to love - a wonderful husband to your darling Melle and a wonderfully supportive and loving brother to Al . You were selfless to the end, thinking only of others never yourself. You will be sorely missed by so many and in my heart there is now a great hole. Rest in peace sweetheart. “Quiet consummation have And renowned be thy grave“.

My brother-in-law. My drama school mate. My colleague. My friend.
Benny, you were one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. Strong in your work ethic. Strong in your principles, your belief in fairness & justness. Strong in your impressive knowledge of almost every sport but especially footy (go the swans!). Strong in your fierce loyalty and love you gave to those close to you. Strong in your unwavering, immense true love & dedication to your soulmate, Melle. Strong in your incredible talent; your truthful storytelling, passion and inimitable, rich, soaring voice. Strong in your sense of humour, you loved to laugh and make others laugh. God, you were funny.
I wish we all had more time with you. You were such a thoughtful and caring human. Even towards the end, you were so concerned about others well being, how we were coping with what you were going through. You knew all the nurses by name & were kind to them. You told the doctors you commended their work. Generous of spirit and heart. That’s you. Your humanity shining until the very end.
We will miss you terribly & love you always. 💔

The opportunity to pursue music appeared quite late in life, and there were times when I continued even during difficult times only because I saw his work. I might never have been so confident in my passion if I hadn't seen him on stage. He gave me so much happy and inspiration. I don’t know what the power he had, but it is incredible, because it's strange to rely so much on someone you've never met.
I lost a balance, but even now, among the other things, your story refill me with brave, kindness and life courage. You will always be moral and value compass for me.
Thank you very much to the family for this opportunity to write a few words here.

Though I trust you now soar free of pain, cradled gently among the clouds, these past few days with us have been nothing short of hell.
Since your passing, I have written to you again and again, yet words feel hollow now. Nothing seems worthy enough. Nothing seems to truly matter.
The only solace I find is in knowing your final days were wrapped in joy and light. Your voice may have once carried shadows and unbearable sorrow (as I still wonder how), but I rejoice that your life was, in the end, a tapestry woven with love and sunshine. And how gracefully you made it seem.
I am forever grateful for the day you came into this world and shared your radiant magic with us all.
When you publicly announced your retirement from the stage, I was heartbroken, devastated. And yet, I held onto hope like a tick clings to its host.
In my mind, there was still a day ahead when you’d be fully recovered, miraculously or otherwise. Somehow, you would be. I strongly and undoubtedly believed in that.
But life isn’t a fairytale, and magic didn’t come for you.
You were supposed to have your contract renewed again and again, if only the pandemic hadn’t changed everything. And I was supposed to sit in the theatre night after night, dwelling in the miracle your voice summoned. And there was supposed to be after parties, wine, friends and long night talks.
I thank the day you signed on to Love Never Dies. Without it, I might never have encountered such wonder. Your immense talent blew us all away, we were trapped, captivated entirely. There was music in our mind.
Who else has the power to paint pictures with just their voice? Who else can make us tremble and shiver at every word?
Who else can make us count the steps?
Who else can make us swallow every step along the way?
I fought with myself every time I listened to you, half of me wanted to close my eyes and drown in the ocean of your music; the other half needed to trace your every movement, memorize every moment.
I hoped, no, I prayed, to hear you sing The Phantom of the Opera again. To hear All I Ask of You with your voice one more time.
I dreamed of you taking on the musical adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo.
But most of all, I knelt and prayed for your health. For luck to strike you a home run. A celebration would follow, banners hung, candles lit.
And now, it seems, it was all for nothing, and yet, somehow, for everything.
I’m still desperately devastated. But I also know: you’re now free. Free of debt, free of what burdened you. And though my heart aches with the weight of your loss, it’s also filled with joy, and with peace for you.
“And years come
And years go
Time runs dry
Still I ache down to the core
My broken soul can't be alive and whole
Till I hear you sing once more”
And deep within my heart, I know you lived to fullest. For all of us who were touched by your talent, your love, and your kindness, I pray that peace will find us too, just as it has found you.
My hopes and deepest condolences are with all your loved ones, wherever in the world they may be. May peace find them and stay.

We had the honour, the pleasure, the joy of representing Ben prior to his departure for the UK. So very happy our friendship endured.
I will never forget the day I had to relay the message to him..."would you like to be a Sydney Swans Ambassador?"... Ben's response was immediate and exhilarated..."is the pope a catholic???" And so began my love affair with the red and white too!!! What a gift that quite simply wouldn't have happened without Ben.
He was a magnificent human in every respect, wearing his heart on his sleeve, he was the embodiment of love, kindness and respect.
Ben's dedication to his craft was boundless, all his work thrilling and utterly stupendous. A joy to behold.
I was witness to the love and care he conveyed to each and every fan who waited patiently for him at Stage Door.
Ben had a gleeful sense of humour and I suspect he saw his role in "Spamalot" as somewhat of a pinnacle in his career...oh yes...he adored the absurd!
In short, a beautiful melange of a working relationship and a glorious friendship.
Ben is an inspiration to us all...most particularly in his devotion to Melle.

While at WAAPA, I was lucky enough to be under the tutelage of Patricia. Each week, I’d hear about her darling boys and their soaring achievements. It was during the time of Love Never Dies, and while passing through Melbourne mid-year, I went to see it — three times. I was enamoured by his presence, by his voice. I must have watched that video of Ben singing ’Til I Hear You Sing at the open rehearsal a thousand times over. I would scroll through Ben’s website, dreaming of having a career like his. He was a giant amongst men for a young baritenor like myself. I even hired the DVD box set of McLeod’s Daughters from the library to see his episodes. While visiting his mum in Perth in my third year, Ben came into the studio to help me work on the song, and I got to see what a remarkably kind and genuine bloke he was. What a terribly sad loss for his dear family, for those that met him along the way, and those that he inspired from the stage.

I knew Ben from Love Never Dies I watched him almost every day as well as listen to the album I still listen to it to honour his memory. Ben was a person who impacted the lives of many many theatre fans and people. Ben will always be the reason why I go into preforming arts because I felt inspired by his journey ben will live on through so many and I will be one of many people who is going to honour him by going into the arts

Ben was one of those rare people who seemed touched by something bigger. A voice truly gifted from God and a heart to match it. His talent was undeniable, but what made him unforgettable was his humour, his warmth and his ability to make every moment feel alive.
Some of my favourite memories of Ben aren’t from the big performances or the shining moments on stage, but from the laughter that came after, those silly, fun, drunken nights where we’d talk about everything and nothing. We’d sit with a drink, talking about our lives, our dreams and the random things that didn’t matter at all… but somehow, in his company, they did.
Being in drama shows together, hanging out with friends, moving between pubs, laughs and rehearsals, every memory is coloured by his wit and that beautiful light he carried. He had this incredible mix of depth and playfulness. One minute we’d be laughing till we cried, the next we’d fall into these quiet moments, wondering about the future and where life might take us.
Even though I hadn’t seen him for a long time, my heart has always held a space for him. Hearing of his passing has brought a wave of memories and a deep gratitude that I got to know him, to laugh with him and to share those years of pure joy and creative chaos.
Ben, you truly are a wonder.
A melody that doesn’t fade.
A laugh that still echoes through us all.
My heart goes out to Ben’s family and to everyone who knew and loved him… because knowing Ben was a gift! One that will keep on giving every time we tell a story, share a laugh, or remember that beautiful, golden-hearted man.
Thank you, Ben, for the light, the laughter and the love you brought into all our lives. You’ll never be forgotten.

Ben's list of achievements speaks for itself. He scaled truly giddy heights of success, and deservedly so. He was a rare talent. But the list of his roles and accolades only tells one part of the story of who he was, because as well as being a gift to the stage, he was also just the most marvellous company. Ben was charming, without having to apply himself to it. He was funny, without ever needing to be the centre of attention. He was kind for the sake of kindness. The world has lost an incredible talent, but more importantly it has lost a brilliant friend, colleague, partner and son. My own memories of him drift together in a creative and often slightly drunken haze. I was assistant director to Tommy Murphy on our SUDS production of The Crucible. We spent long hours discussing what the play meant. Never did I stop to think what, in the long run, those discussions would come to mean to me. Away from the Cellar Theatre though we shared beers, our hopes for the future, and laughter – so much laughter. So many of our friends have written to me in the days since his passing to say that our uni days were some of the happiest of their lives. It is true; they had a golden glow about them even as we were living them. The world has lost a touch of that glow with his passing. But we can all of us keep at least a portion of Ben's brilliance alive by remembering him. This I will do for the rest of my days. With much love, Arion

We first met the Lewis family at Warrawee public school where our son Daniel,Ben and Al became great mates. Our families enjoyed many fun times together. On their return from England the friendship was reignited with Ben, Al and
Daniel attending Newington College together. For us this was the beginning of an extraordinary journey of stellar musical and acting performances . We were fortunate to see Ben perform in Urinetown,Spamalot, Priscilla, two concerts at WAPA ( where we met the beautiful Melle) A Little Night Music, culminating with the breathtaking role as Phantom in Love Never Dies. Ben was not only a prodigious talent but an exceptionally fine human being. His generosity and caring nature was so obvious in his selfless support of Melle in her recovery from that cruel vaccination. They were such a beautiful and loving couple whose wonderful wedding we were blessed to attend. We witnessed their love for each other when we had a lovely evening together in London. We are absolutely heartbroken by Ben’s premature passing but our memories of him remain will remain with us forever. Our love and condolences go out to Melle , Michael , Patricia, Al and all the families.

I met Ben on our first day at WAAPA musical theatre Bachelor of Arts program in 2002. Both Ben and his brother Alex were in my year and we all shared the most intense, ancute and insanely creative 3 years together.
Ben was full of integrity, kindness and an absolute force of nature both off and on stage.
In our 3rd year, 3 months out from graduating I went through a nervous breakdown- I took leave and flew home to Melbourne for 3 weeks to try and get the courage and energy to come back to Perth and complete my degree. Ben was a consistent support during this time, calling me regularly to give updates on how everyone was going and to ensure I was getting my ass back to Perth to graduate.
His care, humour and genuine availability for others will forever be a key factor of me being able to complete something that was very important to me- Ben really knew how to connect with hearts off and on stage. Recently we had a trail of emails that only consolidated to me what an incredibly beautiful considerate, loyal and brave soul he is. Melle, I have so many beautiful memories of watching your love blossom when you were in 3rd year and we ere in first year- I am sending you so much love.
My heart goes out to you Melle, Al, Patricia and all those who have been touched by Ben’s life and passing. X

I came to know of Ben through his most notable work, as the Phantom, in Love Never Dies, and then as the Phantom in London.
He had a voice that elicited chills, and for me, was perhaps the most human Phantom of all.
He was not just a singer, but an actor who embodied and portrayed his characters through song. And that takes performances to another level, which his did.
I send my deepest condolences to his wife, his family, and his friends, who must feel his loss keenly.
I am a heartbroken UK fan who will forever remember him as my Phantom; a man with the voice of an angel, and a man who, by all accounts faced illness with grace and courage.
‘Till we all hear you sing again, Ben. You fought so hard, so it’s time to rest in peace, and sing with the angels. God bless, you and yours.

Ben was an old schoolfriend of our son-in-law, in Harpenden. We were privileged to see him perform on a few occasions; at the Menier Chocolate Factory, an intimate little theatre over a pub in London (Therese Raquin) and as the Phantom in the West End, which I confess to seeing three times, and at each performance he seemed to be even better. We are so very sad that he is no longer with us, and send our sincere condolences to Melle, his family and loved ones. The world of musical theatre has lost a great performer, but his wonderful voice will live on in our hearts and memories. RIP Ben, you will be singing with the angels from now on.

i never had the fortune of meeting ben, but i found so much comfort in his portrayal of the phantom in love never dies. his voice accompanied me through some of my worst days, and i will always be grateful for the joy his art brought me. reading this memory wall only makes my heart hurt more. the only thing i knew about ben was his immense talent, but he spread so much light in his life and truly seemed like a wonderful person. i'm glad he was loved by so many.
my deepest condolences to ben's loved ones, especially his wife. and to ben, thank you for being such an inspiration, not just to me, but what seems like countless more people. i hope you're at peace and free of all your pain now.

This has been a long time coming... I couldn't seem to find the words or exactly how to express my feelings at the loss of another friend... Having to dive straight into tech week last week meant that I had to keep pushing away accepting the fact that someone who was so present for such a formative 7 years of my life was, just, gone.
Ben and I first met in Ian Maxwell's Theories of Acting class at Sydney University in 1999. He was the tall, handsome, charismatic guy that everyone wanted to sit next to or hang out with. The same could be later said when we started at WAAPA. We were both heavily involved in SUDS (Sydney University Drama Society), where Ben played John Proctor in Tommy Murphy's visionary production of The Crucible. To this day, this production is still one of the things I'm most proud of. I tell people all the time about Tommy's use of The Cellar foyer as a character in the play. Ben's Proctor was searing, fierce, and tragic. I can still hear his 'Because it is my name!' ringing in my ears... We shared so many nights at The Alfred which we affectionately called 'The Gross'. One of my favourite memories of him is from the after party for my 21st at this very pub, licking the camera after one too many beverages...
Then came WAAPA, where once again he was definitely the Alpha of our class. Cool, calm, cheeky, and confident, he was very much who we all wished to be. And that voice... My mum still talks about his version of 'Amsterdam' from our 2nd year production directed by Tony Sheldon 'Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and living in Paris', and it too will live forever in my memory. I feel very lucky to have access to a version of it now. His Darryl in 'Witches of Eastwick' (of course) was swoon worthy.
Then in 2006, Priscilla. Ben was not naturally a dancer, but dove into the role with gusto and relish. Thanks to Michael Caton there are some extraordinary shots of him in 'Venus' and as an emu, another memory I will treasure.
After Priscilla, we fell out of contact a little. I was of course devastated by the news of Melle's stroke, but so moved by the community response. We hadn't spoken in a while, but when I heard about his diagnosis, after the rage at how something else so devastating could happen to this couple, I emailed him and received the most beautiful response back, including a hope to see me whenever I was back in Australia.
To see Jason Langley's photo of him and Lucinda Shaw together in Spamalot has cracked my heart in two - 2 beloved friends and colleagues both gone far too early.
Photos of him and Lucinda will both be on our Beau: The Musical set, thanks to our wonderful props master Sean - they will be on stage with me every night.
Ben - I will miss you more than I can possibly say, but I'm so glad we shared a brief window of time that moulded us both. I am sending all my love to you Patricia, Al, Chrissy, Melle, Michael and the extended Lewis family. He is sorely missed by and touched the lives of so many.

After years of admiring his performances from afar, I met and worked with Ben on A Little Night Music for Opera Australia in 2009/10. He was funny, encouraging and gave an immaculately sung and hilariously character filled performance. As a young artist at the beginning of my principal opera career, I remember coming away from that show thinking that Ben exemplified everything about the kind of artist that I wanted to be. Humble, collegial, no grandstanding or bitching, just super talented and fantastically great at his job. A true inspiration.

I have thought long about what I would say and right when I thought I had the words, I accidentally deleted the whole message. Typical me. First of all, I am so sorry for you loss. I cannot even begin to imagine how it feels even if there was time to prepare for that. I knew someone once who survived 2 heart attacks in a row and the third one did them in. They were also septic and in a coma and I knew, I knew that to survive a third would be probably impossible but I held on hope. I knew when I saw your message on gofundme that this day, these moments would come but I still found them very hard. I cannot imagine you all. And yet you all are so strong.
I first discovered Ben five years ago through the Love Never Dies recording stream and it changed my life. I think it contributed to my life long obsession with the Phantom. I quickly found the recordings of his time in the Phantom of the Opera at the then Her Majesty's Theatre and he was magnificent. He was and will probably forever be my favourite Phantom. He had the perfect voice and emotional inflection, the posture and eyes and facial expressions. I think one of my big life regrets will always be that I didn't go to see any shows around the period he was on stage in the UK. His Music of the Night is one of the best renditions of the songs I have listened to and I say in this in a completely unbiased way .(I hope). He was an amazing actor and a great performer with the voice of an Angel and I am glad to see he had the personality to match. I genuinely love Love Never Dies and it's definitely partly because of his voice and the way he brought the character to life. There's this recording of him and Anne singing live Beneath a Moonless Sky and him alone Till I hear you sing and you can literally see him transform. No mask to hide, but yet it felt that Ben went and Erik appeared while listening.
I had hoped Mele would recover and both of them would come back to stage. I wonder if in another life Ben would have joined the Masquerade cast in NY.
His voice truly touched me. I've listened to all recordings countless of times and I will probably countless more. It does cure depression.
So thank you Ben. For the wonderful years on the stage, it's over now the music of the night.
Alex, I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a brother is...
Mele, I wish you health and again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Remain strong.
Till we hear you sing once more Ben, thank you for yourself.

It's been a week and I miss you terribly. In traditional Chinese culture, today is the day when your spirit comes back to visit the world of the living. I do hope that you were here seeing what impressions and impacts you'd exerted upon all these people and learning by heart how much you'd meant to us.
You are loved. You are remembered. You are missed.
You're now singing freely with the angels, right? 'Til I hear you sing once more...

His voice and presence on the stage saved me, wishing I had met him just once to let him know of the incredibly impact he had on my life and those around me who, thanks to him, continue to be able to be around me.

I was first introduced to Ben through my love of musical theatre and The Phantom of the Opera. Watching him in the recording of Love Never Dies made me realise the kind of performer I aspired to be.
When I was 17, it was announced that Ben would be taking on the role of the Phantom in London. I knew straight away I had to see him perform live and hopefully meet him afterwards. During his run, I was fortunate enough to watch him four times, and to meet him at the stage door on several occasions. Each time, he was so generous with his time and words. I told him how much I admired him, both as an actor and as an inspiration to young performers like myself.
Ben offered such thoughtful advice and encouragement. His performances as the Phantom are moments I will always cherish. His voice, his accuracy, and the emotion he brought to the role left a lasting impact on me from the moment he appeared in the mirror.
Since Phantom, I’ve also had the joy of seeing Ben perform in Company and The Bodyguard. It has truly been a privilege to follow his journey and witness his incredible talent in many different roles.
I’ll never forget the scene in The Bodyguard where Frank sings karaoke, and it’s mentioned that he can’t sing. I couldn’t help but laugh at the idea that any character connected to Ben could possibly not sing!
Thanks to Ben’s advice and encouragement, I was fortunate enough to earn a place on the Royal Academy of Music’s MA Musical Theatre course. His words genuinely helped me on my path, and I will always be grateful for that.
I am heartbroken over what the last few years have brought for Ben, Melle, and your families, and I feel deeply for you all.
Ben will never be forgotten and may his legacy continue to inspire so many, as it continues to inspire me.
With love and heartfelt sympathy,
Ben Birkett

Where do I begin… I was first introduced to Ben’s art in 2015, when I became quite obsessed with everything related to Phantom Of The Opera. I’ve heard just about any and all of the Phantoms, but when I saw Love Never Dies, I was completely mesmerized and to this day I always automatically say Ben Lewis when someone asks who my favourite Phantom is. I was hoping to see him live, but since the proshot was Australian, I thought it was impossible, but when he was announced in Love Me Tender UK tour, I knew the trip was mandatory. The show was incredible, full of catchy energy and seeing Ben in something so different is a core memory for me to this day. The memory from the stage door, however, mortifies me to this day, because I was so overwhelmed I was barely able to put together a normal sentence. My ASD got the best of me, but Ben was the kindest soul with a patience of a saint full of quirky jokes that made me feel at ease. 😊
A few years later Ben was announced as the Phantom in POTO in London which was something I could never miss and seeing him bringing the story that accompanied me for all those years to life from the middle of the front row was something I’ll never forget. When we waited for him at the stage door, his first reaction was „Oh my God, you’re still here? I’m so sorry for keeping you waiting!“ And then my friend and I who met thanks to Ben greeted him he was super confused and yet he welcomed us with the biggest hug and we ended up talking for quite some time. 😊 If only I knew that was the last time that I’d see him…
Ben Lewis was a magical artist and the greenest green flag of a human being. I think his incredible career, with such a variety of shows that he built despite never having any social media—even in an age where follower counts sadly often precede talent—is a testament to how remarkable a performer he was. He kept us fans busy and on alert for all the cast announcements, but seeing him onstage and talking to him after the show was the greatest reward for that. We will never forget you. Fly high, Angel of Music.

I don´t really know how to start this so I´ll just start at the beginning…
Back in 2012 I saw that they were showing a musical called Love Never Dies on TV and I kid you not when I texted my best friend right after saying: I need to hear that Ben guy live one time in my life. I also said I didn´t care whatsoever if I actually saw him, I just needed to be in the same room, behind a pillar and just hear that beautiful voice sing. What I didn´t know in that moment was that a couple of years later I would have met that lovely guy so many times and have so many amazing memories just laughing and hugging at stagedoor.
It begun one day at 4.00 in the morning when I took a flight from Sweden to London to watch a show called Candide. The trip up until the show started was a nightmare and I just arrived 15 minutes before the show started. And then, suddenly Ben was on stage and I couldn´t belive it. I was starstruck, and if you know me I´m not one to get starstruck AT ALL. After the show I stayed a little longer taking a chance that maybe Ben would come out doing stagedoor and he did. I kid you know, I was shaking (might have been the fact I had been up since 4.00 in the morning) but Ben just came out smiling, hugging and we stood there talking for such a long time. Yes the people that worked there said so several times but we just kept on talking (sorry).
I was one of the lucky ones who did fly over to London to support Ben in his career as much as I could. My boss and I actually had a running joke together that some of my vacation dates was Ben Lewis vacation dates so that I could book tickets as fast as I knew he was going to be in something. And so it really was. I am so grateful to not only have been lucky enough seeing him in all those amazing parts, having memories with Ben being cheeky and joking from onstage (Forbidden Broadway) when he saw me in the front row but all those stagedoor moments. Will I forever blush thinking about the time when Ben screamed "Look here is that crazy girl I was talking about" when some real important bussiness people or managers where close by, yes but it also brought out so much laughter. Or what about the time I went stagedooring and he just had a huge smile on his face screaming LEEEEEENAAAAA and just gave me the biggest hug. Or the fact he brought me some of my lovely friends one day when I decided that this amazing human being deserved a little birthday gift with messeges from all over the world which they sent to me to put in a book together with pictures of some of our favorite days together. One of them is now a really close friend and she is that all because of Ben. Why? We sat next to eachother while watching Ben in Phantom, I saw that the girl had Ben on her screen and I asked her if she was there because of him. She was and from that day onward we have been really close. We live in the countries next to eachother, work in the same kind of bussiness and we talk everyday. My last memory is from Company, when Ben came out looking like a kid in a candystore on Christmas just glowing saying that he met Hugh Jackman and that smile is something I will never forget (I´m smiling just writing this). And then the usual warm hug before he left for the train.
There are so many memories I want to write down about Ben but there are so many I don´t think there are enough words.
I only got to borrow Ben for some years but those where some of my happiest filled with music, love and laughter. Thank you for putting this page up because it has helped alot reading all of your memories together with Ben. And I hope these stories of mine will help you too.
Our beloved Ben Lewis you will be so missed by so many but you will live on through our memories and your work forever. <3

Even though I never had the chance to meet Ben personally, I am truly heartbroken by his passing. He was the first artist whose work genuinely spoke to me and deeply influenced me. From the moment I first saw him in Love Never Dies, I was captivated by his voice, his presence on stage, and the way he brought emotion and truth into every performance.
His voice quickly became my favourite baritone and his portrayal of the Phantom remains, to me, unmatched. His performances and songs often inspired my own creativity and brought me comfort during difficult moments. Ben’s art truly meant a great deal to me.
I also deeply admired the warmth and humility he showed beyond the stage — his devotion, kindness, and down-to-earth nature were rare and beautiful qualities.
Thank you, Ben, for everything you gave to the world. You will never be forgotten. My heartfelt thoughts are with his wife and family. The world feels quieter without your voice, but your song will never fade.

Meeting Ben at the stage door of Her Majesty's Theatre on Oct.11th, 2018! Ben was and will always be my favorite Phantom. He had such a divine voice, and he's just perfect for the role! I was happy that I managed to see him perform alive!! Rest in Peace.

Dear Ben,
When I was 17, during my stressful time preparing for college, your voice and songs from Love Never Dies were my greatest comfort and strength. I even drew some clumsy fan art back then — sadly, I never got the chance to show them to you. You’ve always been my favorite Phantom, truly one of a kind. Though I never saw you live, your music and spirit will stay with us forever.
Love never dies. Love lives on.
Wishing your family all the love and peace in the world.❤️

Dear Ben,
5 years ago I planned to watch”Bodyguard" in Birmingham and to meet you after the show. Then the unexpected pandemic happened, many of my life plans were terribly affected. When I had to cancel the trip I was thinking that there would always be another chance to see you again.
Life just told me that I was wrong.
I've been trying to accept the fact that in life we barely noticed that this might be the last time we meet someone. I still keep the music box I was going to give you in Birmingham as a gift, which plays “Masquerade”.
I will always miss you and your warm, gentle smile in that winter night when I told you that you were my favorite “phantom” ever.
I wish that things could get better to your family. I would like to do anything I can to support them.
Love never dies, love will continue. Life may be fleeting, love lives on.
Sincerely,
Sylvia

In 2004, I was an 18-year-old kid who got the chance to perform in a show with the graduates from WAAPA at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth. I was paired with Ben to sing Brush Up Your Shakespeare, as well as perform in several tap numbers.
I was just a kid, and those graduates were like gods to me — but none of them made me feel out of place. Ben took me under his wing, treated me as an equal, and guided me through that show with such generosity. That experience built my confidence and set me on the path to train and eventually build a career in musical theatre.
It’s amazing how small moments can have such a lasting impact.
Vale Ben, and love to Al and their families.

I’ve known Ben for most of his life. I first remember Ben and his little brother Alexander backstage at The Australian Opera where his parents, Patricia and Michael both starred in leading operatic roles. Ben wrote to us, only recently, saying that he cherished his extended theatre family during those formative years.
When my family moved to London to reside in 1990, we all met up again. With us in Dulwich and the Lewis clan in St Albans, there were many long treks across town to visit each other.
At the St Albans end there would sometimes be an occasion to hear the boys sing in the magnificent cathedral choir. As a little girl, our daughter Lucy relished Ben and Al as her ‘big’ bothers. They all played together with such abandon.
Young Ben was always highly articulate, very well mannered, warm and also capable of enormous good humour, talents which never deserted him.
Around 2004, Ben, Alexander, Melle, Chrissy and Lucy all ended up in Perth together, studying Musical Theatre at the prestigious WAAPA, where Ben was a much adored member of the cohort. And so the connections continued…
I was lucky enough to be at Ben and Melle’s glorious wedding in Sydney. It was such a sunny and joyous occasion with no hint of the dark clouds that were to shadow them so many years later.
Those damn clouds…they have made us all weep so sorely… not just because of the great misfortune to have befallen Ben and Melle in recent years, but because of the admiration and astonishment felt at their courage, tenacity and unbreakable love through the most unthinkable challenges. There has never been a more inspiring and awesome partnership.
Ben lives on through Melle, his family and his music.

When my family moved to London to reside in 1990, we all met up again. With us in Dulwich and the Lewis clan in St Albans, there were many long treks across town to visit each other.

My earliest memory of Ben & Al, as there was never one without the other, is working on the annual fundraising concerts for Warrawee Public School at Chatswood with Mike, Patricia, Joan Sutherland, Richard Bonynge and many other talents who gave up our time to raise money for the music dept. at the school. It was always great fun and the boys were always there laughing and enjoying the atmosphere.

I knew Ben watchin for my first time " Love never dies" in video and I immediately really loved his performance. I thought he captured the Phantom's sadness masterfully, and his immense sensitivity shone through in his eyes. We will miss an artist of his caliber, a charismatic performer, an
unforgettable voice... May the earth rest lightly upon you " beneath a moonless sky".

I never got to meet Ben but I watched him in the pro shot of love never dies and his phantom was one of my favourites mainly since it pulled at my heart strings with the raw emotions he had. Ben

Till I hear you sing once more.

I went to London especially to see Ben as the Phantom at “Her Majesty’s” theatre when I was 13. I feel truly blessed to have witnessed such a once in a lifetime talent. I will never forget how even at a young age, I cried when I first heard him sing … I have never heard a voice as beautiful as his.
From being a young girl aspiring to be on the stage, to now being 21 & pursuing a career in singing, Ben always has been & always will be a huge inspiration.
I met him at the stage door & since then I wrote to him a couple of times - his letters and words of encouragement he sent back are most precious and I will cherish them forever.
All my love and thoughts go to his wife Melle, his family, and all the many lives he has touched with his kind-heart and talent. He will certainly never be forgotten, his memory is a bright light that will never go out … A beautiful soul. God bless you Ben, the angel of music. X

It is really hard to fathom the world losing Ben. He was a top bloke- genuine, kind, fun and funny and such a caring person.
What I loved most about Ben was his authenticity. He was solid in who he was and he had values and integrity. Always up for a laugh, you just wanted to be in his presence. And yes, he was extremely talented too with an enviable stage presence.
.
Ben, may you rest. You will always be remembered. Whilst we didn't see each other regularly or recently, I always enjoyed your friendship and company.
You were one of the good ones.
My love to you always and to Melle and your families.
