I am not leaving you, ever. I will never let you go. I will always be with you, and I will appear in your life, especially when you need me most, during your most difficult moments.”

In Loving Memory

Anilkumar Ramanbhai Patel, known affectionately as Anil, was a cherished husband, devoted father, and beloved pillar of the Harrisburg Indian community. He passed away on July 28, 2025, at the age of 64. Born on February 1, 1961, Anil lived a fulfilling life.

Married to Shakuntala (Sangita) Patel, Anil shared a deep and abiding bond with his loving wife. Together, they raised two children, Mehul and Megha, and warmly embraced their extended family, including Jasper, the beloved dog of their son and his wife, Priyanka.

Anil’s influence reached far beyond his immediate family. He spent countless hours commuting between Harrisburg and Mehul and Priyanka’s home in Norristown, PA, always available to support them. His care and dedication were especially evident in his relationship with his daughter Megha; anytime she needed him while in Pittsburgh, he was ready to drop everything to be there for her.

His unwavering dedication and generosity made him a central figure in the Indian community in Harrisburg, as he dedicated much of his free time to the BAPS Hindu Temple. There, he developed a deep brotherhood and a strong sense of community that extended far beyond the temple walls. Friends became family, not only to him but to his wife and children as well. Anil’s perseverance, courage, and tireless work ethic inspired all who knew him, guiding both his personal and professional life.

Those who were fortunate enough to know Anil will remember his gentle kindness, genuine care, and resilience in the face of life’s challenges. His legacy of warmth, compassion, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the wider community he so deeply cherished.

Anil will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain a guiding light in the lives of all those he touched.

Journey Through Life

1961
Beginnings in Nar
Anil was born as the youngest child to Ramanbhai and Mangalaben Patel in the small rural town of Nar, in Gujarat, India. He grew up with deep family roots, alongside his older brother, Kaushikbhai, who was 11 years his senior, and his older sister, Ila, who was 5 years older.

Humble Childhood
Anil moved with his family to the nearby town of Amod shortly after his birth. There, he spent his childhood helping his father on the family farm, particularly in the production of tobacco products, which supported their household. With his older brother, Kaushikbhai, having moved to Nairobi, Kenya, Anil took on added responsibilities at home from a young age.

Early Journey to Nairobi
During his secondary school years, between 10th and 11th grade, Anil made a bold and formative move, leaving Amod and his family to join his older brother, Kaushikbhai, in Nairobi, Kenya. There, he began working in woodworking, gaining hands-on experience and learning the value of skilled labor.

Marriage and Reunion
After over a decade in Nairobi, Anil returned to India to marry Sangita, beginning a new and joyful chapter in his life. Shortly after their wedding, he returned to Nairobi to continue working and preparing for their future together. Sangita remained in India for a short time before joining Anil in Nairobi, where they would begin their life as husband and wife—grounded in love, dedication, and shared dreams.

Growing a Family in Nairobi
After Sangita joined Anil in Nairobi, the couple lived with Anil’s older brother for about three years. During this time, they welcomed their first child, Mehul, in 1992. Later, they moved to a separate house just a 10-minute walk away, where their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Megha, in 1996. Throughout their nine years in Nairobi, Anil continued working in woodworking, dedicated to providing for his family with steady commitment and care.

Seeking New Opportunities in the U.S.
Wanting to provide a better education and future for Mehul and Megha, Anil and Sangita briefly moved their family to Daytona Beach, Florida. They spent about one month there, exploring new opportunities and laying the groundwork for their next chapter.

Happily Ever After in Pennsylvania
Anil and Sangita later moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, within the Middletown Area School District, where Mehul and Megha would grow up and receive their education. This became home for the family, where they deeply integrated with the local Indian community. It was here that Anil and Sangita found a strong sense of belonging, especially through their involvement with the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, which became a central part of their spiritual and social lives.

A Life of Service and Devotion through Charity
Outside of his family, nothing meant more to Anil than his service to the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, an organization that held a special and sacred place in his heart. He dedicated nearly all of his free time to volunteering and giving back to the temple community that brought him so much purpose, peace, and belonging.

Anil’s primary seva (selfless service) was in the temple kitchen, where he took great pride in planning and purchasing fresh groceries and produce every Thursday from Restaurant Depot. In addition to his kitchen duties, he also performed the evening prayer (arti) every Tuesday, a responsibility he carried with great sincerity and devotion.

Through years of service, Anil built lasting friendships and a sense of community that deeply enriched his life. His commitment to the temple and its mission was unwavering, and his presence there will be deeply missed by all who served alongside him.

If you would like to donate to a cause that was truly a part of Anil’s very being, soul, and identity, we kindly ask you to consider supporting the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple. Donations can be made in his memory here: https://donate.na.baps.org/harrisburg?region=US
