Alejandro H Martinez

He walked through the world with curiosity, generosity, and an unshakable appetite for life.

Obituary

Alejandro Martinez lived an extraordinary life, not because it was grand in appearance, but because it was lived fully, attentively, and with deep affection for the world around him.

He was a man of boundless curiosity and generosity of spirit. Food, art, literature, cinema, music, and even the simple beauty of a flower during a walk were never small things to him—they were moments to be noticed, savored, and celebrated.

Alejandro lived in eight cities across five countries, traveling widely and embracing cultures with ease and enthusiasm. Yet it was London that captured his heart. He made it his home for the last 22 years of his life, finding joy in its streets, its parks, and its quiet, everyday wonders. He passed away after a tragic accident while doing what he loved most: taking a walk in a London park.

His professional life was as remarkable as his personal one. He enjoyed a distinguished 32-year career with Procter & Gamble, marked by intelligence, discipline, and integrity. His brilliance was evident from an early age—he knew all the world’s capitals by the age of six and was invited to meet the President of Mexico for academic excellence upon graduating from elementary school.

Yet Alejandro was never defined by intellect alone. In contrast to his sharp mind, he was famously absent-minded—missing flights, losing his way on long walks, and telling these stories with laughter and charm. He took mischievous pride in his creative tactics for sneaking into paid events, even Wimbledon, and he never lost his love for celebration, music, and late-night joy.

The outpouring of messages, memories, and love received since his accident has been overwhelming. It stands as powerful testimony to how deeply he touched others. Alejandro was profoundly loved by everyone who knew him, and he returned that love effortlessly.

Although he chose to live alone in London, he was never alone. He leaves behind a large and devoted family in Mexico and the United States, as well as a cherished family of friends in London—his chosen home, and his chosen people.

Alejandro leaves us with a lasting lesson: to live fully, to pay attention, to take pleasure in the smallest details, and to never postpone joy.

Obituario

So sorry to hear of Alejandro’s departure from this world. Amongst many fond memories of shared experiences, one that springs to mind is that he taught me how to make the most amazing, authentic Gaucamole !! This was during the 2010 World Cup when we had a departmental gathering at my house to watch a few games after work.

I always found myself thinking of Alejandro every time I made his amazing dish, and now it’ll have extra poignancy !! Rest in peace my friend 😊

Rest in peace, Alejandro.

My deepest condolences to the Martinez family and to all your close friends who loved you so deeply. Your gentle, beautiful soul will live on through everyone whose life you touched.

I will forever cherish the memories of every moment we shared, from somehow getting invited to Adriana’s and John’s honeymoon in Cartagena, to that wild horse-riding adventure in the mountains, the Carlos Vives concert at Royal Albert Hall, and the last time we unexpectedly ran into each other on the streets of London.

You will live in our hearts forever.

Rest in peace.

So many special memories of Alejandro over the years, where to begin....?
It was back in the summer of 2009 in a nightclub in London Bridge where we first met across a crowded dance floor.
It became apparent very quickly that he was quite unlike anyone else I had met before. For one, there was no sign initially of a tv (?!) at his home at the time over in west London, which led to many an evening of us playing YouTube videos on his laptop to each other of favourite music, TV and film clips that we both loved and wanted to share.
It was Ale that properly introduced me to a wealth of latin music for the first time, as well as classical, opera and also to his love of world cinema for which I became quickly adept at reading subtitles!! That and lots of trips to the theatre including performance dance shows at Sadlers Wells and Barbican amongst others, and an amazing array of music concerts over of the years.
I was always, and continue to be, so bowled over by his enthusiasm, not just for the arts but of life around him in general. Sadly from my experience, this is not always a given with others, and I really valued his enthusiastic passion for the things he loved.
We travelled and visited so many places over the years, which I simply would not have had the privilege of experiencing in the same special way without him and for which my life has been transformed and enriched forever.
The opportunity to spend time with his beloved family and enjoy Mexico to the maximum is something that I will treasure always.
I, as I'm sure everyone else reading this tribute site to him, still can't quite believe I am writing these words about someone who is still very much alive in my thoughts, but with whom tragically I will no longer spend time with.
There have been many moments over the last few weeks where I have felt lost and frustrated at not being able to just pick up the phone and chat , meet up or even simply share links in WhatsApp messages such as recent music discoveries or film clips that we know each other would love and appreciate.
Alejandro was such a gentle, kind and thoughtful person who genuinely loved and cared about all his family and friends, of whom there were many.
Life will never be quite the same again, however his endless charm, humour and zest will live on in our hearts and thoughts forever.

Quedamos pendientes apreciado Alex! Lamentamos no haber compartido más experiencias juntos.

We met Alejandro shortly after arriving in London in 2001. We shared many moments together and attended several BBC Proms concerts. Through Alejandro, we learned alternatives to expensive tickets and queued for hours to attend events. We spent many warm and memorable evenings at his home, and we also celebrated one of my birthdays together with our family.

Alejandro loved art and good food. He was always reserved, respectful, and deeply kind. He would gently correct me (Yalina) when I expressed myself in very colloquial Venezuelan language. He was always affectionate. He shared humorous anecdotes from his travels, which he told with great warmth and wit.

About two weeks before his accident, we exchanged messages to arrange a meeting in London. We left it pending, dear Alex. We deeply regret not having shared more experiences together.

I met Alex in 2002 in Blois France and we worked on and off until he left P&G. He was an incredible individual. 5 mins after we met it was like we had been friends for all our lives. He was making it so easy to be with him, such a positive attitude, love for people and always asking questions because he was interested in getting to know them better. I am still chocked by this sudden departure, and we will miss Alex big time. To all family and friends, please accept my sincere and deepest condolences.

My heartfelt condolences go to Alejandro’s family and friends.
I first met him in 2001, when he transferred to France as Technical System Manager, and later again during his assignment in London. Alex was not only an outstanding engineer, but also an exceptional human being — warm, attentive, and gifted with a wonderful sense of humor. He was genuinely appreciated by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
The news of his passing comes as a profound shock to all his engineering colleagues.
We will miss you, Alex.

Alex was a great friend and an amazing human being. We shared many projects and fond memories through the more than 30 years in P&G, in Querétaro MEX, São Paulo BRZ, and last crossing our paths in London UK.
His contagious smile, our multiple shared funny stories and the “fofoca” over the many years will always be cherished!
He positively touched many, many lives.

Just like Alejandro, I searched for my flat next door to his for over two years. The first time we met was when I knocked on his door to ask him to keep the music down. He opened the door with a smile, and what started as a brief visit turned into a long conversation. That evening I learned he was Mexican (not French, as I had first assumed, though he spoke French), a true foodie, genuinely in love with London and our neighbourhood, and someone with a large, loving family back home whom he was about to visit at the time.

Alejandro will forever stay in my memory as a true gentleman - often with large headphones on, walking briskly through our local streets with a smile on his face.

This is an incredible loss, but I am grateful that his family is choosing to remember and celebrate the many beautiful moments shared with him. With his sunny, friendly, and open personality, I think this is exactly what Alejandro would have wanted.

Alex was a wonderful friend for more than 30 years and even after not seeing him for a while he would always be warm and a wonderful host, to take you to a great restaurant, talk about how much he loved his family and make you always feel at ease. My wife and I are shocked with this huge loss and will miss him, but also will cherish memories of the time we spent with Alex in many different countries. Our most sincere condolences to all his family.

Alejandro was a great friend and I am so sad that he is has gone so soon, in such awful circumstances.
I loved his personality and enthusiasm, his smile and his laughs!
He always brought good vibes and strong energy every time I saw him.
We all have so many happy and funny memories!
Hikes in the countryside and on the coast, holidays abroad, birthdays parties and other celebrations, nights out in London dancing away, dinners in our neighbourhood or at the local pubs! (He always had great recommendations for restaurants and good taste for food!).
He was a great listener and attentive.
His loss is immense and I will miss him dearly.

Lovely, strong memories of walking and talking in the park covering many subjects and being totally at one in and with the world. Special memories that I’ll hold special - thank you for those. We had fun and laughs. Taken so young but a legacy we will all hold close to our hearts

Te quiero mucho Ale y te voy a extrañar siempre.

Alex had a great love of travelling and enjoying new experiences. Whether alone or with friends he always found ways to immerse himself. The ‘explorer’ as we called him, his greatest pride was capturing some photos of a day of adventure then returning to share his ‘special pictures’ over a beer at the end of the day. We had many happy trips and adventures and my memory of him laughing out loud at a shared joke will remain. I send me deepest sympathy to all his family and friends at this sad time and we will celebrate his life in the coming days.

For me, Alejandro was far more than an uncle. He was first an older brother, and later, my best friend in the world.

Growing up in Chihuahua, his visits were events I looked forward to all year. I planned every detail in advance—especially the food—because sharing meals with him was one of our great rituals. Those visits became some of the brightest moments of my youth.

Years later, when life took us both to Europe—me to Switzerland and him to London—we found ways to stay close. After his retirement, he spent long stretches with me in Mexico City, where we lived as we always had: watching series from our carefully curated lists, wandering the city, and eating everything from street tacos to fine dining.

He was my partner in crime, my confidant, and my role model. I love tennis because of him. I love cinema because of him. I love music even more because of him. No matter the distance, we were always sharing new discoveries, new sounds, new ideas.

He took me on many of my first great journeys—my first trip to New York to watch the US Open, my first time in Europe, and countless others that shaped the person I became.

His loss is devastating, and the absence he leaves feels immense. Yet above all, I am deeply grateful to have shared this life with him. To have walked part of the world alongside him was a privilege I will always carry with me.
