Obituary

With much love and sadness, we announce the passing of Alan Norman Hilbrecht (Grandpaw), who was born on October 16 1950 in England and passed away on May 30 2026 in Campbell River, BC. Alan is survived by his loving wife and partner in life and business, Martina; his devoted daughter Tamara (Castle) and son in law Brice (Castle); his boys (dogs) Barney and George; and other extended family members. He is predeceased by his father Helmut Hilbrecht, and mother Audrey Elizabeth Hilbrecht.

Most knew Alan as Grandpaw of Grandpaw's Treats, his passionate retirement business that has become known and loved by dogs and their people; his legacy will live on in the heart of this family run business. In his earlier years, Alan was a proficient pressure welder by trade, and went on to manage the operations of Foothills Steel Foundry in Calgary Alberta for 25 years; he thrived with enjoyment through his career. Relocating to the Oyster River area in his retirement had him fulfil his lifelong dream of living on Vancouver Island. Alan was a wise and strong man, always working on one project or another around his property. He was an avid sports fisherman his entire life and was happiest on the water.

Alan navigated cancer for four years with the same perseverance and strength with which he lived life. Our family is eternally grateful to the Cancer Care team at the Campbell River Hospital who provided warmth and support alongside the treatments that allowed him the one thing he wanted most: more time with his family. Further, the paramedics at BC Ambulance Service went above and beyond, and the entire team at the Campbell River Hospital provided outstanding care that allowed for Alan's peaceful passing. Alan's family are awed, inspired and grateful for the hearts of everyone involved in his chain of care over his cancer journey who filled this challenging time with compassion.

Alan will be remembered for his strength, generosity and the quiet ability to bring people together. Family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues all experienced the wisdom and sincerity that made time spent with him meaningful. Throughout life, he built lasting connections and touched many lives through simple acts of generosity, encouragement, and friendship with dogs and humans alike. Conversations, shared moments, and everyday gestures created memories that will remain with those who had the privilege of knowing him.

The passing of Alan (Grandpaw) leaves a space that cannot be filled. Yet, the memories, lessons, and moments shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. Alan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

When my first dog Bandit passed away ten years ago, Al and Marty brought a card, which read “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.” Bandit crossed the rainbow bridge carrying all of his favourite Grandpaw’s treats. Well, dogs do go to heaven. Al’s passing is a tremendous loss on earth, but a huge gain in heaven. Miss you so much, Al. Hope you are having a great time up there seeing all your old pals and catching up on all the stories. I know you are keeping a caring watchful eye on Marty and Tamara too. Big hugs to Marty and Tamara!

Marty and Tamara, I'm very sorry for your loss. I was remembering some great times we had, like karaoke parties, fishing trips to the island and all the other times we were able to get to gather. Now Al and Metro are pain fee and fishing to their hearts content.
Hugs to you Marty, Tamara and Brice. Love always Flo

Cancer claims another. 😭 So sorry to hear about this loss. My dog Dexter always looked forward to getting scratches (and treats) from Grandpaw at the barking lot sale at Woofys each year. I hope that his family have many happy memories to get them through this painful time.
